So, I just rented and watched the first season. I had never watched this show. I just wasn't interested when it originally came out, but have since changed my mind.

The video store doesn't have anymore seasons, but they are on order. I hate having to wait.

I'm still mulling it all over, but I really like this show so far. I'm probably tainted by the TWOP (television without pity) recaps (they hate just about everything about Dawson Leery), but I liked Dawson. They felt he was too self-indulgent, over-analytical, etc. I liked that part. Especially since you could tell Dawson was based on Kevin Williamson (I'm guessing) since he's an artistic type in a small town as was KW. I can relate to that aspect, so I liked that.

At this point I want to see Dawson and Joey get together, but I really want to see Joey and Pacey get together later. Which, it's not too difficult to guess, is exactly what will happen in the ensuing seasons.

I don't want to get too spoiled on what happens in the future, so I'm doing my best to avoid that, but would love to know what others thought about this show.

Last thought, I just love the picturesque town of Capside. Where was it filmed, because it's just gorgeous. Was it filmed on Cape Cod somewhere?

Oh man, Sophie! You like The Creek too??? LOL!

This certainly was a gem of a show. I watched it from the (originally aired) Pilot episode, through the end of the 4th season. I can't even remember why I stopped watching it. I was watching on and off during the 5th, and then I watched every single week during the 6th season....Dawson was my childhood....It`s one of the all time best, IMO. It`s absolutely in my top 10 shows ever.

Yep, the Dawson Leery character was based on Kevin Williamson`s own childhood (the girl best friend with a boy name, lives down the creek, has to take a boat to get to his house, has a crush on him, etc). And of course, he was a young filmaker that was ridiculed along the way to the top.

I'm glad you've decided to give the show a shot. You'll love it....Like My So Called Life, before it, Dawson`s Creek really is a coming of age show. There's times when you feel like you know these characters. Like they're your own friends.

I don't want to give too much away, but as you saw, the closing moments of the 1st season takes their relationship to a new level.

It`s going to be a while before you see any Joey/Pacey stuff, but it will happen before you know it. There's 1 more boyfriend for Joey (in season 2), before her and Pacey realize their feelings for each other (season 2 does see Joey and Pacey become better friends though).

The exterior of Capeside was all shot on location in Wilmington, North Carolina. Dawson`s house is still in the same place, as some sort of walk through museum. I really hope to go see it one day....One Tree Hill (another WB drama) took over filming in Wilmington, when Dawson left (much like The WB tried to make OTH fill the gap Dawson left on their network, though that didn't exactly happen, LOL).

This is so great! I'm excited to have someone to discuss this with!

Wilmington, NC must be a really beautiful place to live. I am so jealous!

I don't know what I'll do if I can't get the second season soon. I know TBS shows it at 8am but I am moving soon, so maybe I'll just sign up for DVR services when I make the switch.

I've heard a lot of people gripe about the characters for being too analytical or that the vocabulary is too extensive for realistic teen dialogue (so what? and how insulting?) but that's what I loved about the eps I've seen. I really loved the dialogue, that's what drew me in and then I started caring about the characters. I hope the dialogue continues to be as sharp as I get into the other seasons.

I heard Wilmington is a small/quiet town in North Carolina.

I hope you get to watch seasons 2 through 6 soon. They're great. If your video store doesn't get a hold of them soon, you should try and find them on sale....They go on sale for $20 every couple of months (the regular prices are about $35).

I loved all the dialogue and references....Maybe the people that made fun of the writing just didn't get it....As a young adult, I do actually find that a little insulting....Obviously, a lot of the Dawson demographic didn't talk like that, but it gave the show it`s own vide/feel. It made it different than other teen dramas, and a lot of other shows in general....Of course the extra~big words were a bit much at times, but it was fun. I literally would smile at some of the stuff they would say (like I do when I watch the Gilmores say 58 words a mintue!)....I wasn't one of those extreme fans that would have the thesaurus (sp?) ready on wednesday nights either.....I just took the show as it was.

Oh, I was referring to a particular website, and forgot to mention that that was what I was referring to. It's called Television Without Pity. They're known for having been the first to recap DC and the site sort of mushroomed from there. They "get" it, but they don't, if you know what I mean. If you think they don't get it, the recappers will name drop their Ivy League degrees to make sure you know.

Vitriol and snark is sort of their schtick. Which, when done well, is great! But, it's often drivel and just not quality recapping. However, lots of network execs read their stuff (KW did at the time) and the message board attached to it. They are considered the site for network people looking for feedback. Which sickens me, because it's not representative of all viewers. The recappers there, for the most part, are a very self-congratulatory bunch. If their recaps were actually witty instead of redundant, I'd be down for it, no matter how scathing. It's just not the quality snark that they've gotten such credit for. The only reason I go into this is because that site has gotten a rep that doesn't really hold up under examination. It's more pedestrian and less Algonquin Round Table than its reputation would have you believe.

Thank you, because that's how I felt. Same goes for GG. The elevated vocab on DC and the "58 words a minute" spiel on GG just became an established convention of the show and it's one that I like.

I don't see why writers should talk down to their audiences. I'm thankful that it doesn't contribute to the dumbing down of America. Just because teens don't talk that way doesn't make it a bad thing, either. Complete realism isn't very compelling. The dialogue actually made you think and it's much easier to be witty or even caustic when the situation calls for it, when vocab is introduced. I actually have a little more respect for characters that sound as though they've read a book or two.

Whoa! Well said!!!

I thought they were normal teens, that used big words. I really didn't see the problem some people had with it...Maybe they were just too dumb to follow the writing, LOL.

Did the store say when they would have the other seasons available for rent?

And it`s cool if you want to start a thread or 2 on some stuff from the first season (Questions, comments, polls, episode discussions...You know I reply to anything, LOL).

Thanks!

The video store just said that they should've gotten them in by now and were going to call about it. I'll be moving in a couple of weeks, to the college town I live in during the academic year, and I know a video store there has all the Gilmore Girls seasons, but I never looked for DC because I hadn't given the Creek a shot at that time. I'm hopeful that they'll have it.

If not, maybe I'll just have to subscribe to DVR service when I order my new cable package, since they run it on TBS.

Did you peruse the DC recaps at TWOP?

I strongly suggest getting the DVR box. I think ours is only $7.95 a month (comes out to about $10 after tax). That's a good deal (the DVR holds up to 40 hours of shows!).

TBS has the show, but I've noticed some edits and cuts on that channel...The N airs the show in My So Called Life`s old timeslot (5am), so it would be better to try and record the show from there. Right now, both networks are nearing the end of the 2nd season (you just missed it!), so it`s going to be a few months before they start over again.

I found the Dawson recaps (as well as several other of my favorites). I saved it in my favorites, but I haven't checked them out yet. I'm going to read the recaps for my favorite episodes this weekend....I read the synopsis` for a few shows, and they seemed kind of harsh. I bet it`s going to be fun though....I did like that they said Dawson was (at one time) their flagship show.

Thanks for the tip regarding the N vs. TBS. I would've never known that. I think I'll just go for the DVR thing, because it would be easier. I'd like to record 90210, DC, Buffy, and GG.

TWOP is known for its scathing recaps, which on principle, I don't mind if the critique is well-written and justified. But sometimes the recaps falter to raging hyperbole which I don't find entertaining or consider to be particular witty writing. In general though, I prefer analytical critiques rather than synopses, unless I just need to know what happened. I recommend the My So-Called Life recaps and the early Gilmore recaps (not the latter ones) as they are really good, IMO.

I can't wait to hear your opinion on the DC recaps. I know it'll take some time because each one is usually around 15 pages long, but be sure to post when you have read them.

The thing about the TWOP recappers is, is that they are intelligent, informed people that understand the conventions of film and tv, so they understand perfectly well what Williamson is doing and the language is certainly no barrier for them---they just don't like it. Speaking broadly to the recaps I've read on a few different shows, they do capture moments and here and there and overall, are great at snarking on tv/film conventions that many of us have grown weary of. I just think their recaps are often cliched and aren't as witty and clever as they've gotten credit for in the press.

OH GOD! I went through a few of the Dawson recaps last night. I was questioning how this was their favorite show at one point, when all they seem to do is nit pick(sp?) about every little thing. They gave a lot of good episodes a C or D...It`s fun reading this stuff though. I'm going to continue reading their thoughts on more episodes. Thanks again for introducing me to this.

Oh, and you're right! They've been given too much credit.

Yeah, we're not the only ones. There is a message board that is a spin-off, of sorts, devoted to mocking the site and its posters. It's usually good-natured, just blowing off steam type stuff. Posters at the mocking site are mostly current and former twop posters.

Anyway ITA with what you're saying. I don't get how you'd put so much effort into something that you truly think is vile on all levels. So, I don't get why you don't see some of the love for the show, here and there.

Oh, and one of my biggest pet peeves has to be the nicknames they give characters. It's not funny and it gets redundant. Some recappers are worse though, and never use the character's names.

HUH??? They still post there, but make fun of it? So they post like you and I post on SO, they don't actually work on the site, right?

I didn't pick up on any nicknames yet (maybe I missed them...) but I have noticed they hate Dawson Leery.

I also read a few of TWOP`s Gilmore Girls recaps, and they seem to LOVE that show. It was mostly all positive (the ones I've seen anyway). Even a lot of the 7th and final season, which IMO was their weakest year, seemed to get many A`s and B`s....At least I have those reviews to look forward to.

There are a lot of rules about what can and can't be talked about on TWOP, so sometimes it's easier to go elsewhere. Also, some posters report others for really petty things (signing a post) to get the other poster banned. Sometimes it's just because the poster dared to disagree with them. Ex: "I don't get why everyone hates Rory." You'd get banned for that one line, according to the rules. Hence, the other site was born.

Yeah, it's pretty bizarre stuff.

Anyway, some of the recaps really aren't that bad and others are pretty bad, IMO, in terms of writing. Like I said, I don't mind scathing, I love it when it done well.

A good example of stuff I enjoy about their recaps. I can't remember which show it was, I'll use Joey for the purposes of retelling here, but the recapper wrote this (paraphrased), in reference to a character carrying a bag of groceries: "Camera pans to Joey walking down the street with a bag of groceries that is clearly in violation of the FCC regulation which states that all TV grocery bags must have the requisite baguette and celery stalk hanging out of the top of the brown paper, never plastic, grocery bag." I love stuff like that, because I've noticed that too.
