The two-parter, Crime and Punishment, was an incredible emotional episode.
Jackie crying in Roseanne's arms was heartbreaking, and Dan grabbing his jacket to confront Fisher sent the audience in an uproar. This was a live audience, wasn't it?
Darlene was hilarious bailing her father out of jail. The Jailhouse Rock tag scene was great.
I'm guessing this is one of the years that Laurie Metcalf won an Emmy. She delivered quite a performance.
This two-parter is my favorite episode so far, but I have a long way to go. Roseanne's father's funeral episode would come in a close second.

I loved the Part I tag with DJ's principal seeing Dan in the police car.

I noticed that the opening credits for Part I were different than those used for Part II. It was the same people, same clothes, eating pizza, but their actions were different. I wonder what would be the point of having two different themes for one season.

I noticed the music in the opener was really jazzed up, then in part-two, it returned to normal.
The first, different theme was great. I love that music...always loved horns.
Does anyone know who plays that music?

The first episode had the extended version of the 5th season theme song...

Yes, this is one of my more favorite episodes.

Yes, that was a live audience as far as I can tell.

Yes, N@N showed the Son of a .... comment.

I wonder who the musician is who plays that music. It doesn't sound like a run of the mill piece. To me, it's off the charts. I love it, especially that version I heard the other night on Part 1 of Crime and Punishment.

I agree that this is a wonderful episode! I don't know if this happens to anyone else but the entire time I can't get it out of my head that :Laurie Metcalf ends up marrying Matt Roth (Fisher). Don't know if anyone else thinks about this during the episode...

I didn`t know Jackie married Fisher. I only watched a few eps of it when it was on in the 90s, so I don`t remember much. Is that who she gets pregnant by?

Jackie didn't marry Fisher. Laurie Metcalf married Matt Roth. The actors, not the characters.

Did they meet on the set or did Laurie bring him on? Also, is there a big age difference between them, and do they have kids?
Pain in the neck me. Sorry. Thanks. :)

Yes... Jackie is pregnant on the show in Season 6(the season after the one now) but the storyline is FRED gets her pregnant. Well in REAL-LIFE she was pregnant and Fisher was the father. In the episode "Labor Day" where she gives birth, in the opening tag Jackie is three days overdue and she lifts up her shirt and says "I HAVE A THREE-DAY OLD BABY INSIDE OF ME!" and at that point, it is obvious she is pregnant in real-life, a faked pregnancy couldn't do that.

She was not pregnant then. She had the real baby in Nov. 93. That thing in 94 was a specially made stomach that looked like a pregnant womans' belly.

i should know i have had 3 kids myself. and if it was fake they are way past special makeup. If you look at her ribs and stomach that is a baby on board.

This was a great episode. One of the few episodes that actually made me cry.

Yes, this was a powerful 2-parter. One of the many things I liked is Dan did what he did with zero regret.

As a 10 year old and on, I watched for 9 years while my sister was abused by her husband, so this ep really impacted me.

When Dan grabbed his coat and simply walked out, I knew Fisher's ass was grass and Dan was the mower.

Dan's da man.

(And yeah, the bit when Darlene goes down to bail out Dan is great... just about anything with both is great any way.)

I loved those 2 episodes. It was really good that even though Dan didn't really get along with Jackie he felt bad for her when Fisher hit her so he went to hit him. Or maybe since he loved Rosanne and she loved Jackie and was her sister, that's why he did it.

This two-parter episode was among my favorites in the series because it really showed that despite how much Jackie got on Dan's nerves, he did care about her and wasn't about to stand by and let her be mistreated by some a**hole.

I loved the fact that prior to this episode, there wasn't a hint of physical abuse going on. I really think the writers captured the whole "who really knows what goes on behind closed doors" mindset. They also hit a true note with Jackie being too ashamed to tell anyone. Unfortunately, too many women in abusive relationships cover for their abuser and try to keep the ugly secret.

Im not a huge Roseanne fan, but some of those episodes really were wonderful.

Definitely one of the best episodes of the entire series, and it was able to tackle a very serious topic with sensitivity while allowing for humor as well. John Goodman earned his Emmy nod for this episode! Loved when Roseanne had Darlene take Dan's bail money to the police station!

I was re-watching Season 5 just recently and I saw Episode 11, "Of Ice and Men" Roseanne says to Nancy (Taking about Jackie) "She was suppose to come over to my house last night for dinner, but you know how some people are they forget their family when a man gets involved." and Jackie replies, "Something came up, Ok?" I took notice for the first time when Jackie walks in the door she is keeping her coat closed tightly with one hand and is acting rather distant. It just made me wonder if this was suppose to be a subtle sign about that she was being abused.

There were a lot of times Dan couldn't stand Jackie but I am so glad he did what he did to Fisher.
