View Full Version : First Season
Bluestone 04-12-2001, 04:49 PM It was okay, but not as good as the rest. Only the setting was better. About the characters:
Nancy was cool, but she was just never around. We barely saw her.
I liked Sue Ann, but she was SOOOOOOO annoying! Plus, unlike Nancy, she was ALWAYS around. Even when the scene wasn't about her, she was usually there in the background.
Molly was just another Tootie. She was often around, but she didn't have much to say.
Cindy was an early Jo, and she's my favorite first season girl. She was also the first girl on the show to have her own episode (YES, even before BLAIR!).
Mr. Bradley, I didn't really like. A stuffed up sexist, he was. The only times I liked his were when he saved Blair and when he helped out Sue Ann (more or less) with her dieting problem.
Miss Mahoney... she just wasn't there long enough.
As they all say, the show just didn't swing without Jo.
callmetootie 04-12-2001, 05:02 PM I don't agree with you on all of this because, I really liked the first season, but here's what I thought of all of the characters....
Nancy: She was Ok, but she didn't hang around a lot and she did strange things with Roger.
Sue-Ann: Extremly annoying and hangs out around the set too much. Needs to take a long earned break and move back to Kansas.
Molly: Camera-girl, and doesn't like guys at all. Talks about her puberty. Likes Mrs. Garrett too much.
Cindy: Tomboy, and hangs around with wet clothes, sweats, and is in love with Blair.
Mr. Bradley: A sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot you might say??? Nah, not really but kind of depressed.
Miss. Mahoney: Has a pig nose, and only hung around for 4 of 13 episodes.

Felice (Nancy) was the first girl to be cast and the pilot episode is all about her, where you can see it on different strokes if those schmucks at N@N ever air it.
ThomasE 04-13-2001, 09:12 PM Another episode was featured about her and SueAnne. The ep when theyw wanted to leave eastland.
Devastation26 04-14-2001, 01:00 AM Now that I've seen the episodes over, I like the first season (some)

Andy: C'Mon Ms. Garrett, throw us a song.
Ms. G.: Born in the U.S.S.R.

Um, obviously you haven't seen "Rough Housing", or you didn't pay attention. Cindy's not a lesbian.
iluvjoandnancy4eva 07-23-2002, 01:05 AM I didnt like the first season that much. I only liked the IQ episode. It was funny. The reason I didn't like the first season is because...um... no JO!!!
LucyFan 07-23-2002, 02:27 AM ONE WORD FOR THE FIRST SEASON OF THE FACTS OF LIFE:

*sigh*
Maybe someday you'll come around... ;)
Impressions 07-23-2002, 11:37 AM I Thought the first season was okay, but it had to many girls. And Some of the girls didn't have much to say, and others were always annoying like Molly and Sue Ann. And Blair was seen too often, I think. But the show became better when Jo stepped into Eastland :)

I thought the WHOLE show was horrible, according to your post on the General baord a couple weeks ago.

Hmmm. I'm not going to deny this but I guess I changed my mind when it came to Hallmark. It seemed a lot horrible when it was on Nick at Nite because whenever I saw an episode it was usually a not-so-good one and that caused me to lose interest in the show. The other thing that really turned me off from the show was the first season. Oh gawd, it was HORRIBLE! Too many characters and not enough character development. UG
JDS84 07-26-2002, 07:04 PM I hated Season #1.
ThomasE 07-27-2002, 05:45 PM I liked the first season. Overall I liked it better than some other seasons.

Thank you! Finally someone who doesn't criticize season 1: in my opinion season 7, 8 and 9 were far worse lol!:talk:
valentina warner 02-10-2020, 03:49 PM PS: i came to the conclusion that people are overlooking the fact that BLAIR made a great impact on the 'pilot' episode 'the girl's school'. Sure NANCY was the main focus, but to be honest she was boring and the best part of this episode was when MRS G catches BLAIR smoking and screams FIRE!

I think you are right: Blair began to steal the show as early as the backdoor pilot. Although the script's focus was on Nancy, I think it's clear the writers and the producers saw the potential of a "nasty step-sister" character like Blair.
This, I think, directly harmed the character of Nancy, who, by the fifth episode had become living wallpaper. Ironically, I think Nancy had more lines in the second season (in three episodes) than she did in the remainder of the first season (in nine episodes). There were many scenes where Nancy could have had lines, but simply didn't. In other scenes, her lines ended up on the cutting room floor. Blair's role kept expanding throughout the first season.
I think that the writers realized, and wisely so, that the character of Blair had the potential of becoming a break-out star, and could easily create the conflict they needed. With Tootie already becoming the second break-out star, the die was cast, and IMO, the writers began whittling down other parts, first starting with Nancy and then eventually moving on to Cindy and Molly, who became her fellow Wallpaper Sisters by the final episode, not invited to the final group hug of the season, instead left downstairs in the basement.

Bravo Retro guy and well said!
I saw potential in the BLAIR character immediately, and i knew with a certainty that because she was so rude to MRS G she'd end up becoming one of the main characters (that's a classic lol!): that scene where she tells the Housemother, that "housekeeper knows their places" and MRS G answers her "so do little girls" is one of my favourite ones, cos it shows the first interaction between the spoiled girl and the no nonsense housemother, who ironically would become her guardian and confidante in the future! (especially when MRS G takes the cigarette out of BLAIR's hand to avoid her getting the blame ha ha!)

Yes, there's no doubt that the character of Blair, grating against other characters, was an immediate hit: Lisa played her very well, and I think everyone realized right away that the character was something the show needed.
Still, I wish producers wouldn't write out other characters just for the sake of expanding the roles of the most popular characters. There's no reason they couldn't have thrown Nancy a bone now and then: at least allowed her a few lines in "Running" during the Gym scene, for example.

I think it's a bit harsh to say they became her wallpaper sisters, because their roles were still bigger in "Dope" than many of Nancy's roles in episodes, with them having more lines and screen time than Nancy.
