did anyone else notice in the episode "I.Q" that Nancy speaks with a New York-like accent when she's yelling at SueAnn to "just get off (pronounced "aaauuufff") my back" when they are on the couch anticipating their mid term grades??

Yea I noticed, she does have the accent throughout the run of the show, but mostly in the first season. Even today if you listen REALLY close you can hear it!

Because Nancy O. (Felice) was born in NY. Though she never had as thick of a NY accent as Nancy M. did.

If you'll notice, Nancy (the character) pronounces Mrs. Garrett's name different than all the other girls. She says the "a" in "Garrett" more like the "a" in "have", whereas most girls say the "a" like the "a" in "care".

"I do know how to open an umbrella, Mrs. GArrett!"

HA - good catch! This was also an issue on “Knots Landing”. Almost all of the characters pronounced Gary with a long A. But Mack, originally from New York, pronounced it with a short A. I pronounce Garrett the way that Nancy does.

Since Blair and the Drummonds are from NY, does this mean they’re pronouncing it wrong? I’ll have to listen the next time I watch.

You guys are cracking me up, here!

I love Felice. I love her saltiness at the producers' lame excuses. And I LOVE your responses to that saltiness.:lol::lol::lol:

I love it too!!!

What's funny is I didn't find it "funny" when I saw it in the documentary. I was just so intensely watching, that when she did, I knew she was going to do it when she was looking for the words and bringing her hands up, but I didn't laugh at it---I was more like "OOOooooo" at the bitter open delivery of it.

It wasn't until I said "40-year-old bitter Felice air quotes" in that thread, and you laughed at that, that I realized the real humor in it.

And now it's my favorite new thing!!

I suppose it depends on which borough they're from. Now, I can't tell the difference between a Queens accent (like Carrie Heffernan's accent) from a Bronx accent (like Jo's accent), but are people in Staten Island even going to have the same accent?

I do notice Felice's/Nancy's subtle NY accent, but that one is harder to catch. It definitely comes out on "Garrett", but isn't nearly as noticeable as Carrie Heffernen's "Lon Guyland" accent.

Lisa's Texas accent was more noticeable at times. They should have had Blair be like from a rich oil family from Texas.

I don't know. I have a subtle NYC accent, and I was born and raised in and near Waterbury, CT. I wonder what borough it sounds like, even though I'm from none of them. I also have Boston traces in my accent. And, after living in New Orleans for 7 years, I sound like them, too.

Do you say "Boston" like a NYer? Or like a Bostonian?

I think she usually pulled it off okay, but she definitely had her "Texas moments".

BLAIR definitely sounded more like Texas to me on the 'pilot' episode! (and i'm not even American to notice the difference!):lol::lol:

Watch the first Cousin Geri episode. Lisa broke into her Texas twang several times through out the show.

did CHARLOTTE RAE had a 'Wisconsin' accent?

Well, she really was from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. But I associate that accent with the word "box" sounding like "bahx", almost (but not quite) rhyming with "fax". My mom and two of my cousins definitely have that accent.

Charlotte did grow up in Wisconsin, but she moved to NY right after she got out of university, so she did have somewhat of a NY accent.

I guess I always thought she just had a "normal" accent. Definitely not NY like Jo's, lol.

I agree with you 80sSitcoms: CHARLOTTE RAE didn't necessarily have a New York accent like JO (certainly not from the Bronx!):lol::lol:
