((Not mole like the rodent or mole like the thing on Cindy crawford's face....its the science thing))

Is anyone else celebrating Mole Day tomorrow in their science-ish classes? My chemistry class is having a party....We get extra credit if we have food with mole-ish names. Like I'm bringing Cinnamon Moles.

Yah my school's screwed up.

I remember moles! But no, my school never celebrated anything like that. Have fun though! :)

My old high school always made a real big deal out of mole day. If students have chemistry class they would have to make a stuffed mole. Then they would name a mole king and queen. And you could order mole day shirts. I still have mine, but I've never worn it since high school.

I know the Prep Chem class is doing stuffed moles, but we aren't cuz apparently "its not an honors type activity."

No, my science teacher was telling us about that. I thought she said "Mold Day" though.....I only realized it was 'Mole' until I saw a sign up on the wall at school.

I have "that mole thing" on my face too.

Nope, I never took Chemistry when I was in HS so we never did that- the school I went to offered Chemistry as a junior or senior year science class. Physical science was a freshman class and biology a sophomore class. After that, you aren't required to take any more science classes, but a lot of kids opt to continue science for a 3rd year. I did take Applied Biology/Chemistry (ABC) class my junior year and it was a TON of fun!! No textbooks needed and we never had any homework. Now THAT'S what a science class should be like. :D

lol I haven't been in a chemistry class for two years, but from what I remember, it's some sort of measurment? If memory serves me right, one mole equals 6.02 X 10^-23. I miss that class. I hated, hated, hated, hated, hated physics. Chemistry was 1000x better.

6.0221367 x 10^23 (not negative 23!) is another approximation of the number of atoms, formula units, or molecules in a single mole... so 32.00 grams of oxygen has 12.0442734 x 10^23 atoms since there are 16.00 grams of oxygen in 1 mol and 32.00 is twice as much so therefore you have 2 mol. Oh, and 6.0221367 x 10^23 DOES have a name you know, it's Avogadro's number, named after some Italian physicist (I forget his first name) who had the last name Avogadro.

That was pretty boring, wasn't it?

I'll tell you what you got! The mass of your present is approximately 18.02 amu... and there is only one mole of it.

Anybody know what it is??

Happy Mole Day! Even though I still have no idea what it really means! When I was in high school some of the science classes celebrated it, but none that I was in. They even had mole day T-shirts that the science teachers and some students could wear!

LOL, Mole Day! We celebrated it too in hs chemistry. My teacher was INSANE! He went all out for the day. And each year his school picture had "Moley," his stuffed mole on his shoulder! On the day we had crepe paper, balloons, food and different centers in the class that had games. The only game I remember was the hit the mole game, were you take a hammer and wack the moles. Great fun. And people say scientists are dorks. :grr:

Oops, I thought at first that -23 seemed too tiny. Well, I haven't had Chemistry for two years, so it's no big deal. :p At least I remembered most of it.

Nobody got the answer!!!! It's water!!!

H2O (the two should be in subscripts but oh well...)

2 moles of hydrogen = 2 x 1.008 amu = 2.016 amu
1 mole of oxygen = 1 x 16.00 amu = 16.00 amu

16.00 amu + 2.016 amu = 18.016 amu (which is 18.02 amu when corrected to the proper number of significant figures)

Ok, I take that back. I happened to be in the Chemistry room today and there were all these posters up saying stuff like, "Happy Birthday Mole," "Happy Mole Day," "We love the Mole". Then later on these girls came around to every class and sang a song they wrote about the mole. I'm glad it wasn't celebrated when I was in Chemistry! :)
