View Full Version : How will you watch your DVDs?
Lolac 10-20-2003, 09:36 AM Tomorrow is the big day! How are you going to watch your DVDs? Will you select your favorite episode from the sets and watch it first? Will you start with episode one and watch them in order? Will you watch the bonus material first to enhance your watching of the episodes later? How will you savor these?
Me? I am going to watch "Sally is a Girl" first. I guess the reason is because I know they've edited so much out of that episode and I want to see what has been restored. Then I will probably watch the bonus material for enhanced viewing of the episodes in order.
I can't believe the day is almost here!!!

SawgrassSteve 10-20-2003, 09:55 AM Lolac,
I think that's a good idea! Everyone, go to the episode that you remember most as being edited, then watch it, and let the rest of us know what has been restored, and wheather or not you think it took away from the scene to have it removed in the first place. OK?
This should be fun!
Steve
Lolac 10-20-2003, 12:09 PM Steve, I like your idea. However, it will be a few days before I will be able to do it because I just checked with Amazon.com and my estimated delivery date for those 2 sets in Oct 27-Nov3. SIGH!!! Well, I've waited this long. Another week won't kill me.

Lolac,
Sorry to hear about the delay from Amazon. The reality is, I order about 75% of my online purchases thru them, but recently I've been disenchanted with them for that very reason - they aren't good at getting materials out to the customers on the day of releases. That's why I went with DVDEmpire on this purchase. My set was mailed out on Friday via Priority Mail, so I expect to see my set either today (early!!) or by tomorrow at the latest (on time).
I did place an order with amazon.com for another dvd that was also scheduled for release tomorrow, and I see that they still haven't even mailed the thing! That's really frustrating, and means I'll be waiting for it like you will be waiting for your two sets.
I think from now on, if there is a dvd or book that is yet to be released, and I REALLY want it on the day of release (or earlier if possible), I'll go with some other company besides Amazon. Otherwise, if it isn't important, I'll stick with them because despite this "problem", I still think they are very good in reliability, packing, and customer service.

Screenwriter 10-20-2003, 01:02 PM I live in Elliston, Virginia, so I doubt they'll have the DVD show on DVD on the shelves of WalMart. so soon.

I did not know about DVDEmpire. Next time you can be sure that's where I'll be going. Amazon.com got the last "Harry Potter" book here on the release date. I automatically assumed the same would apply here. I'm tempted to go to Costco to get my 2 season sets tomorrow and simply return the DVDs to Amazon when they come next week. I don't think I can wait another week!!

Kristen 10-20-2003, 02:30 PM Amazon was good when I bought the first season of TMTMS. I got it the day it was released. I think it depends on what kind of shipping you take. Obviously I really wanted to get TMTMS as soon as possible, so I took 24 hour shipping and it was fine. For this I think I took 3-7 days b/c of cost so I'll probably get it this week.
As for what I'll watch first, probably the bonuses b/c that's what I've been looking forward to most then "Oh How We Met On the Night We Danced" just because it happens to be one of my very favorite episodes.

Awww, that sucks. I should be getting mine sometime this week. I just tracked my package, and it's somewhere in Delawere LOL.
But anyway, :bighug: to Meg! I'll let you know how my DVD's are!
Lolac 10-21-2003, 08:41 AM I received an e-mail from amazon that the DVDs were shipped yesterday, so I should be getting them in a day or two. Not too bad. I can't wait to get them!! I'm glad I don't have to wait til Christmas!! Hang in there!

Lolac, even though this conversation is interesting... let's save it for emails... No I didn't get hit hard by Isabel, but I heard she inundated the upper portion of the state. And thank you. I do believe this is a beautiful part of the state.
ScottD 10-22-2003, 11:46 AM It's been a few years since I've watched the show regularly so I'm starting from the beginning! I watched the first four episodes last night and am so happy with the quality--I've never seen the show look so good on tv!! I'll probably watch the episodes on each disc and then the extras. I don't usually listen to very many commentaries but am really looking forward to these! I love that they included the original sponsor commercials and I love the packaging--I'm just in DVD on DVD heaven!!
BlueEyesKid 10-22-2003, 07:04 PM hehe *hugs Kristen back*
Give me lots and lots of details you guys! I stil have...like 2 months 2 days untill I get them.
Lolac 10-23-2003, 10:33 AM Ok, Steve, I've watched 6 episodes now and I can say that I am amazed at how much was edited out of them for TV Land. Today, I watched Washington vs. the Bunny. They edited out an entire scene at the very end where Richie is in his bunny costume and he and Rob and Laura sing "You're the Top" together. I think a lot of the things they edited out are very significant. In "Sally is a Girl," an entire conversation between Laura and Buddy about whether or not it is appropriate for a woman to call for a man is edited out. I think it was very important to the scene. I can't tell you how happy I am to have these DVDs!! It is so much fun to watch these uncut episodes. I haven't gotten to all the extras yet, but I am looking forward to doing that. I'm sure all of us who have our sets now feel like we have died and gone to heaven!!! I'll be interested to see what other people notice about the editing of the DVDS.
Lolac
ScottD 10-23-2003, 10:50 AM I thought that scene at the end of Washington Vs. The Bunny seemed new! It's been awhile since I've watched a lot of these so I'm not sure I can pick out the cut scenes, but I definitely thought that I hadn't seen that part before! I'm going to see if I can dig out my old videotapes of the show from when it was on Nick at Nite so I can do a comparison on some of the episodes. It's so great to have the uncut episodes, especially because I've really only recently realized how much channels like TVland and the Hallmark Channel edit shows. I have a feeling that they often cut the very last scene, the tag scene, like they did with Washington Vs. The Bunny.
B&W fan 10-23-2003, 05:09 PM The first episode I watched on Tuesday was from the 2nd Season set. It's one of my favorites: Someone Has Got To Play Cleopatra.
A big missing scene in this one, and I still don't know how they pulled off this edit, was actually a whole verse from Laura's song in the audition. Again, I don't know how they pulled off this edit, because I've never noticed a glitch in that song that made me think they "jumped" in it.
I'm sure I'll continue to have more deleted scenes jump out at me as I watch.

barwars 11-01-2003, 03:15 PM I got the DVDs last wednesday.
BOTH seasons. Thank God I did.
I just finished watching the entire first season today.
And Ill start Season 2 soon....
I cant wait until....
2-10 Season 3
4-13 Season 4
6-15 Season 5
RichFonz 12-28-2003, 02:39 AM I got Seasons 1 & 2 of DVD yesterday, and I'm amazed on what they have. Not only the episodes are uncut, but the bonuses are extraordinary. Especially the original pilot of DVD, Head of The Family. I enjoy Dick's comic performance, and let's not forget Mary Tyler Moore's role as perky Laura Petrie. I'll be ready for Seasons 3-5 once they're released.

To go to Lolac's original question, I've been watching my discs by looking at the bonuses first! I find those types of things fascinating. To see how ideas were thrown around to come up with a final idea for filming, then to see awards given out for the creativity and accomplishments!
I must admitt I didn't know that the process was so loose as Sally describes it in her commentary during "All About Eavesdropping." To change so drastically from day to day that you end up the week with very little from the original script is awesome, because it shows the improvisational talent the cast had.
No wonder they were #1 for so long!
Steve
Larry Surrell 12-28-2003, 03:09 PM I've been watching my DVDs in order, one or two episodes a night just before bed, alternating between DVD and the Honeymooners Classic 39. I'm up to season 2 disk 4, and the last episode I watched was "Don't Trip Over that Mountain". The first thing I do when watching a new disc is search for easter eggs. The Kent commercials are great (although as an ex-smoker I can say smoking is not. I don't treat my taste kindly with Kent!).
I too can't wait for seasons 3, 4 and 5.

I got the first season for christmas and I LOVE it!!!! Right now I'm watching my favorite episodes first, and then I think I'll go back to the beginning and watch all the episodes in order. I watch a few every night alternating each night between TDVDS and TMTMS, another one of my favorite shows! (Tonight's is a MTMS night, lol)
Last night I watched "My Blonde Haired Brunette," "To Tell or Not to Tell," and "Sally is a Girl." All great episodes!
Just like everyone else, I also can't wait for the other three seasons to come on to DVD! I read and article at TVShowsOnDVD.com about the all the features on season 3. I don't know if it's already been posted here, but I'll post it anyway. DVD Season 3 Article (http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/newsitem.cfm?NewsID=893)

The Peeper 12-29-2003, 04:04 AM I got both seasons for xmas, and have questions. I have been watching this show since it started on N@N years ago. I always thought they and TV Land were hell bent on preservation. I compared some of the dvd episodes to the ones i have captured myself, and sure enough EVERY episode I've compared has had minutes worth of footage removed from it. Most of my episodes run at 22.5 minutes, compared to 24.5 minutes in their resotred state. Why do they do this? And then claim to be preserving television heritage? Do they do this to every show they have? Is it really worth chopping shows needlessly for an extra 2 minutes of commercials? Does anyone have the MTM dvd's? Do they run longer than 22 minutes? This has really sparked my curiousity.
jehobden 01-02-2004, 12:52 AM I haven't watched a lot of the eps yet, so I haven't noticed a lot of edits, but I noticed a few while watching the 2nd part of The Bad Old Days. TV Land cut out part of the discussion between Rob and Laura where they're in bed and he talks about washing Ritchie's hair and part of the dream sequence where Laura washes the floor and tells Rob that she can't turn on the tv for him because it hasn't been invented yet.
Petrie Malone 01-02-2004, 04:53 PM Last night I watched "It May Look Like a Walnut" and there was a whole part of the first bedroom scene with Rob explaining the movie to Laura that I have never seen before. Apparently TV Land cut that part out.

In response to The Peeper, I have TMTMS on DVD. After reading your post, it sparked my curiosity and I checked a few episodes recording time. Sure enough, EVERY episode I checked ran 25 minutes or more.
:angryfire Why do they do stuff like this?? We want to see the FULL episode....not just MOST of the episode! Do they do this to add a few minutes more of commercials? Like The Peeper said, is it worth cutting out parts of episodes just for 2 more minutes of commercials? This really gets me pissed off at TV Land! Is there anything we can do about it? Maybe sign a petition or something?
Kurt
offtopic: P.S. I know this post doesn't really relate to how I'm going to watch my DVDs, but I felt it was important to post anyway.
Lolac 01-02-2004, 04:55 PM TV Land is not the only network to do this. Most sitcoms shown in syndication are cut to allow for more commercials no matter which station is broadcasting it. It is annoying. Thank goodness for DVDs!!!

I probably should have put networks, in general, as opposed to just TV Land. Because you're right; TV Land is not the only network doing this.
I'm so glad we do have DVDs-with the full, un-cut version of every episode that is. If we didn't...imagine how many great clips of scenes and funny lines we would never get to see, not just from TDVDS, but all sitcoms!
Kurt
barwars 01-02-2004, 11:13 PM I think it works out well.
It could help the sale of the DVDs.
If the shows were shown uncut on TVLand.... people might figure why bother by the DVDs when I get the same show on TV.
But by editting and cutting it.... it leaves more time for commercials.... and better incentive to buy the DVDs.
Burford Lives!! 01-13-2004, 12:08 AM I just found this board. Awesome!
To answer the original question, I have been watching them in order, for two reasons. First, it makes sure that I don't miss any of them, and second, I love them all. Actually, I prefer episodes with Buddy and Sally in them, but most episodes overlap work and home, and they are all funny.
I am almost through the second season, so I can't wait for the third season to come out.
Lolac 01-13-2004, 04:55 PM Welcome to the board, Burford Lives! This is a fun place to be for Dick Van Dyke Show fans. I, too, am very much looking forward to the season 3 set. I pre-ordered it today on DVDEmpire.com. It should arrive around the time of my birthday!
Lolac :welcome:
wayman 01-16-2004, 11:57 PM I received Season 1 for Christmas. So far, I am watching them in the order they were originally aired.
