View Full Version : 'Lucy Meet the Mustache' MAJOR BLOOPER!

One of the key plot points is that after Lucy and Little Ricky temporarily sabotage Ricky's chances with Ernie Kovacs, Ricky threatens to take the WHOLE family back to. .. CUBA to start running a tobacco farm!
Keep in mind that this was filmed in early,1960- a year AFTER Castro had taken over Cuba AND had abolished private landownership! Folks were trying to fleeCuba by the production of this episode (and, of course, Desi himself had had to flee his homeland thanks to Communist revolutionaries back in 1933). Yet, none of the writers, performers, etc. caught this rather glaring implausibility during this time. .nor have I seen this commented in ANY critique of this episode- even decades later in hindsight.
All I can think of is that since the Arnaz marriage was in its final stages of meltdown, the 'Ricky wants to RETURN to Cuba' imposibility totally slipped under the radar!

Umm..I don't really think that is a MAJOR blooper, there are worse! lol!

 Never even thought about that. Perhaps at that point, no one cared about details...everything was falling apart anyway.

It's called a 'joke', PracTz! It's doesn't have to be politically accurate!

The thing that bugged me is they never showed how Ethel got that letter back in that envelope!

Back in 1960, when it came to Castro and Cuba, most other shows more or less did. .but I guess with the divorce and this being the last show, it slipped under the radar and/or nobody thought they had anything to lose by ignoring Cuba's current conditions. Put it this way, it would make as much sense today to have Margaret Cho talk about opening a kimchi stand in Pyunyang, North Korea - totally ignoring the existance of the North Korean govt!

Good question! Ethel learned MANY talents all those decades surviving miserly Fred and Crazy Lucy!

I genuinely believe that most people wouldn't even think about it! It's just a throwaway line.

yeah, I think you're right about that Mickey.

Probably RICKY couldn't care less where he ended up; since the marriage had fallen apart; to him as far as going back to CUBA wouldn't had been a great deal.

I think you're confusing the show with their real life. The comment was made on the program about the "Ricardos" and their marriage didn't break up!;)

Kazza

The marriage didn't break up but RICKY wanted out somehow and CUBA was probably the safest place to be.

I'm sure RICKY was only kidding, DESI probably wasn't. ;)

Desi did not want to go back to Cuba! Like a lot of immigrants he was more patriotic than those born in his adopted country. The guy was so pro-America it was scary!

Besides, if he'd wanted to go back to Cuba, nobody would have stopped him. I'm sure Castro would have been delighted at the publicity!

...Ohhhhh I like that MICKEY. you are on DESI's defense

crazyredhead

thats not exactly what I meant..it's just that at that time Desi probably wanted to get away from Lucy and vice versa. lol *shrugs* I know he didn't want to go back to Cuba though.

I know what you meant. I think the same thing; even CUBA sounded like a good place to get away from it all

Was on the Desi defence? I didn't mean to be! Nothing to defend him about. I doubt he was that anxious to get away from Lucy though. Else why the flowers on their anniversary every year? :)

He might not have wanted to go to Cuba, anyway, but I sure do!

yeah lol! I've been to the Dominican Republic..that's really close to Cuba! lol! I even went to a city called Santiago there!

Eeeeeeee! I got "A Book" today!! I'm fixin to read it in a little while!

The Dominican Republic is a poverty stricken country and everything is expensive. Cuba is like a time warp; going back to the 50's without traveling too far.

Let us know how you like A BOOK.

Technically this post has a blooper in it too since the episode's called Lucy Meets the Moustache isn't it? Kind of a lame episode too considering it's the last one they did together.

"Lucy Meets the Moustache" is one of my favorite episodes of TLDCH. I love Lucy's wig in it and it's much funnier than some of the other episodes (Lucy's Summer Vacation for instance). I try not to think about what was going on behind the scenes while watching it.

I agree with AMBER about being a good episode. I just can't help think of what was happenin'; you could tell that there was something going on. "That's all" was a very good song for that ep

it's much funnier than some of the other episodes (Lucy's Summer Vacation for instance). Well that's true, it is better than that one!

 Yeah, that's my least favorite episode. It wouldn't have been so bad if Ida Lapino wasn't so annoying! I'm sure she was a very good actress, but situation comedy was definitely not her thing, she didn't seem very believeable even acting as herself, IMO.

That's what Lucy thought also, she was a B movie dramatic director and had never done comedy, i don't know when she did her series with Howard, but it was very light comedy drama, not the same.
