now that john is gone how long do you think the show will last?

My guess is it'll finish season 2 but it won't make it through the third one...

I also believe there won't be a third season because there will always be something lost and different in the show itself.

I can't say until I see some of the episodes without John. The season premiere though was there highest rated episode.

I agree. It seems like it won't be able to last long, but we really don't know what the producers have planned, how everyone else will respond, and how low the ratings have to go before ABC cans it (given the state ABC is in right now). So...I guess I just don't know at this point.

I have no idea. You never know, it might last and I hope it does.

I hope the show does last for awhile. The greatest tribute to John might be if this show remains successful. But it will be a different show without him. It'll go from being a show about a father trying to deal with his teenage daughters to being about a widowed mother trying to raise three teenagers. Some things will probably be the same. But we won't know until the episodes air.

I say that if fans stop tuning in to the show, it would be like turning our backs on John's extended family. John took them, especially the kids, under his wings and now it's up to us fans to keep supporting them. He would be disappointed otherwise! Make sure you keep watching the show!

My initial reaction was that it was terrible to go on with the show without John. But it is a good point that it would be a tribute to John to continue watching. Still, it will be very sad and how this will work in the long run we will have to see.

I don't think the show will make it to a third season, and if it does, the curtain will fall then. I think the ratings are good now because of the curiousity factor and the viewing of John's devoted fans. Once that wears off, I think the show will slip in the ratings. The show was a vehicle for John Ritter. It was his show.

Even now, when I watch old shows without the stars who are absent for whatever reason....All In The Family (Carroll O'Connor), The Bob Newhart Show (Newhart), Roseanne, etc...they don't hold my interest.

I wouldn't watch Seinfeld without Seinfeld, EL Raymond without Raymond. The supporting casts on these shows are good, but not enough to sustain my interest for the long term.

John Ritter is irreplaceable. Sad to say, but 8 Simple Rules could have survived losing any cast member but John. It's too big of a blow to the show.

It's very difficult for any show to become a hit....extremely difficult. Now, 8SR is another show trying to prove itself and become a hit.

When 8SR debuted, I gave it a shot, but it wasn't for me as I only like adult sitcoms. I posted on this board that although I stopped watching the show, I really hoped it was a success. I was thrilled that John had another hit.

I watched Three's Company during its original run, and I LOVED John Ritter before some of you folks were born, and I truly hope I'm wrong, but this is how I feel.

It is such a tender situation- People are watching out of loyalty, curiousity, and hope.

But after this season I think it may finally sink in that John Ritter is not coming back, most of the people tuned in for him, and the show is nowhere near the same.

It can't be the same. Not saying it can't be good in its own right, but it is not the show that people originally tuned in for.

The glaring empty space of John Ritter will always hang over the show. Will the gloom ever pass? Will it ever find its own personality? And will that be a strong and funny sitcom?
I have my doubts.

I don't think it will last beyond it's third season.

I agree with both dlemond and janice for the most part.. i'm not saying 8sr doesn't deserve success or anything.. but i'm skeptical that the show will ever regain what made it so enjoyable to watch with John.

Looking at the ratings since the episode of Paul's death. I would say they could go on for at least 6 seasons but not with really huge ratings like in the beginning of the season.

I'm not sure how it will last but the episodes that have been airing these past few weeks have been acted and written well. The show isn't the same without John but I think that the other castmembers have the potential to make it work.

I think that the show will probably last 3-4 season's, but I must say, agree with me or not, it probably would have lasted the same with Ritter.
3's Company was a brilliant premise, with great writers and an excellent cast. It came at a time when sitcoms were really pushing the envelope, and people just couldn't get enough of it. It was a farce, which are very difficult to write, but when done well, like it was, are incredibly funny.
Today there really is not many great sitcoms. Two are coming to a close, and one, Frasier, is just a spin-off of another great show,
and the other, Friends, has been pretty week in it's last few years, and had only gotten to national prominence by riding the coattails of Seinfeld.
Seeing the high ratings for these last few episodes it is obvious that in this country now reality based shows are king, and there has not been a really good sitcom in awhile.
I was very sad to hear of John Ritter's death, and I had watched his show only for him, but sadly, I feel the show has gotten better without him, because they are doing something different, making it more interesting to watch. Only time will tell if this show will last, but personally, I'm getting more enjoyment watching Ritter's son Jason on 'Joan of Arcadia,' a simple show with an original idea.
Maybe this show will last many years, and maybe it won't make it passed this season. But either way, one thing I know is true, this is no 3's Company.

I felt the show jumped the shark when John Ritter passed away. He was the backbone of the show. I think Eight Simple Rules won't return after this season.

Sorry Hondarider, but I disagree with you that the show has gotten better without John. The show is just different that's all. It's a totally different show now with a new premise.

I guess I didn't word this correctly. I don't think the show has gotten better without John, but it's made it different. Before John's death this show didn't stand out in any way from other
sitcoms. Now that it has had to deal with a delicate issue and bring depth to it's character's it's done things other sitcoms don't
usually do. I don't think the show is funnier than it was with
John, much less personally. But I find it more interesting now that
it's not such an overused idea.

Before John Ritter Die I Love the Show I Though It will last at six to eight years Now I think only Three to Four years beacuse last Ritter Shows was so high and the last show that he did It ranked in the Top 10 and The Post-Ritter Show was the 4th Most Watch Show that week and Not the same with out him I Liked James Garner but this Will always be John Ritter Show and it not the same show anymore It still a good show but not great anymore but I think it will make the 4th season to make in first-run syndication so people will always see the last work of John Ritter and plus we are abc number one sitcome

maybe the show will last until the mom is about to re-marry, Kerry gets knocked up by Kyle and get a quicke marriage in Vegas, and Bridget decides that she wants to pursue acting full time and decides to move to Hollywood where Bridget gets her own spin-off!
