View Full Version : What did you think of the Series Premiere of Coupling?
Janice 09-26-2003, 02:47 PM I wasn't impressed. It felt awkward, strange and unfunny. I will, however, give it my three episode try.
If it doesn't grab me after three eps, I throw in the towel.
dlemond 09-26-2003, 03:02 PM I watched half of it and it was very awkward.
You can tell right off the bat that these actors are not comfortable with their characters and they are far off from anything resembling chemistry.
And even when a joke may have been funny, it didn't work in relation to the script, the actors or the delivery.
Who knows with time, but it is a bad start.
Sitcomwriter 09-26-2003, 03:04 PM I kind of feel the same way.I like the British version better and The acting on this show is awful.Plus, It''ll soon be up against "The OC", A show that I love.
cheers freak 09-26-2003, 04:23 PM I thought it was awfull. It seemed like they were trying way to hard to be edgy and it just came of as crude and stupid. I dont even mind the occasional crude and stupid show if its funny but it just wasn't funny. And dlemond was right about the chemistry on this show- there was none. I dont think that this show is going to be the hit NBC expected.
-*Forever*- 09-26-2003, 05:29 PM I didn't think it was that bad. Some parts were alot better than others. I really like that Jane woman ... she was the only one who made me laugh, like when she was playing her cell phone game and she was like "Yay!"
felicitylen 09-26-2003, 06:37 PM I honestly thought it was not funny and I watched the whole thing. I didn't find anything funny. I felt embrassed for them.
I taped it last night, and am going to watch some time this evening.
I'm a bit upset that I was not able to post the first negative review.
;)

That's what I plan on doing. Overall, I really didn't think it was that bad.
Mr. Television 09-27-2003, 03:38 PM I finally watched the show. It wasn't that bad but it did seem like another Friends clone that nbc is famous for. I didn't see anything too bad in it either. I wonder why it was given all the hype.
I finally got a chance to see the pilot this afternoon, and I wasn't impressed. The juiced up laugh track didn't help much either.
It's just not that funny.
If you get a chance, tape the British version on BBC America. Both the British and American versions are using the same scripts (with some British references changed for America) but the British cast is funnier.
Despite having one of the prettiest female casts in recent memory, this show didn't do it for me.
Out of a possible four winks, I give "Coupling" ;) ;)
Yesterday afternoon I watched the episodes I taped off BBC America, and as I stated in my other post, the British cast is better. Plus, the British version is almost ten minutes longer (they actually do a thirty minute show, as apposed to the 22 minutes American sitcoms do) so some things will be left out, which is a shame because there is one great joke referring to the movie "Resevoir Dogs" in an upcomming episode I now is going to be left out.
Tape "Coupling" off BBC America. You'll enjoy it a lot more than "must see TV's" inferior remake.
TVJunkie101 09-28-2003, 11:31 AM I believe a single episode of the British version will air on Bravo, Tuesday October 7th at 11pm. Most likely a one time thing (it will be the episode Size Matters). I'm pretty sure it's the British version, at least it's what my TiVo guide and Yahoo TV search says.
The british version is much better, and it airs quite often on BBC America.
If anyone wants to watch, an encore of the US pilot will air on Bravo Tuesday September 30th at 11pm.
David 10-03-2003, 09:05 PM After 2 episodes, I actually like it a little

Same here. This week's episode was good. The cast seemed more relaxed. I'll stay tuned for a while.

Really?
Ah, poop.
I dismissed it and told the wife I'd find better meanderings on the web.
Did I just say poop?
and meanderings?

oh wow, i thought i was the only one who actually liked it here! lol
°Bubbly Blonde° 10-04-2003, 10:59 PM I liked it
Sitcomwriter 10-05-2003, 12:49 AM The 2nd episode was better but the show still needs a lot of work.It just seems like a show and not a "Friends" or "Will & Grace" or even "Good Morning Miami" where it feels like you personally know the characters you know? I mean, the acting on "Friends" sucks IMO but this is awful!
redd609 10-08-2003, 12:57 PM I truly think that is show is horable. I love the british version. I really think that americans have to stop ripping off other ideas. I don't think that's going to happen.
The one thing I really don't like is the fact the they're using the same script as the britsh. Just with american dialog.

With that said I hope the american version gets cancaled
Lizzie McGuire 10-09-2003, 08:49 PM I'm with you on that.
Last night I taped the new episode on NBC and the British version of the same episode off of BBC-A. This weeknd, I'm going to do a line by line comparison, with detailed notes on all tha actors and how they interpret their characters to find out once and for all which version is superior.
In case you were wondering, I have nothing to do this weekend....
;)
Janice 10-10-2003, 12:50 PM Coupling passed my 3-episode test. I like it a lot. Last night's funeral episode was very funny. As I become more familiar with the characters, I enjoy it more. I'm not thinking, 'Who's that or who's with who?'.
I don't know about a British version, and it doesn't matter to me. All In The Family and Three's Company were originally British shows. Funny is funny. It was hilarious when the guys were doing their Reservoir Dogs thing. I hope this show lasts and keeps improving as it has been. I love adult comedies.
Note to TJL: This show is custom made for you. Put down your magnifying glass, watch it and laugh.
You know I'm kidding of course, but from what I know of you, and few know we're involved in an illicit affair, lol, I think this is your sort of show.

Yes, I can be very analytical with some shows; but when TV writing is a hobby (and some day future occupation) I do study a show rather than just watch. But, this is a great way to see the differences in style between a British show and its American spinoff, mostly because they're using the same scripts almost word for word, which is something they didn't do with "Three's Company" or "Sanford And Son."
Some shows I watch purely for pleasure, but the ones I really have an appreciation for, and that fit with the style of comedy that I write, I will study every nuance.
And as for our *ahem* affair, well now everyone now knows why I nominated you Governor of California.
;)
David 10-11-2003, 09:44 PM After 3 eps, I would give it a B.
I dont think its the greatest show ever.
But I think its worth watching. It is funny at times.
Mr. Television 10-15-2003, 12:00 PM Coupling is being preempted this week for a repeat episode of Whoopi. It will also be preempted on October 30th for supersized episodes of Friends, Scrubs, and Will And Grace.
