Frasier is by far the greatest spin-off to ever air on TV. It is also probably in the top 20 greatest sitcoms of all time. Don't just take my word for it. It has been on for 11 seasons, duplicating its origin show, Cheers, and has won the most Emmys of any television program ever to air in the history of television. Plus, after the eleventh season Dr. Frasier Crane will be the only sitcom character to have remained on the air for 20 consecutive seasons. The only other TV characters to have been on the air that long are Marshall Dillon and Doc Adams from Gunsmoke, which was also on the air for 20 seasons.

By the way, Family Matters was not a spin-off!

GeorgeJefferson

Actually, Family Matters is a spin-off from "Perfect Strangers" because Harriette first appeared as a witty elevator operator on that show. But, in that same sense, "The Andy Griffith Show" is a spinoff from "The Danny Thomas Show" since there is an episode where Danny gets arrested in Mayberry that aired prior to the premiere of the first season.

Well since, that is the case...are we talking character spin-off?

GeorgeJefferson
10-28-2003, 04:41 PM
Aren't most spinoffs a result of "character spinoff"? Laverne & Shirley spun off from Happy Days as a result of the girls appearing on a few episodes. The same thing happened with Mork as well. You would consider those series to be spinoffs, wouldn't you? Even if they're not characters who were originally cast members of the show, they still spun off from their single appearances.

You come to think of it, you're absolutely right. When I think of spin-offs, I often think of main characters. For instance Flo fromAlice ! Sure, I agree with you now.

If you are talking ALL spinoffs, "Knots Landing" wins by, well, a landslide, lol.

If we are just talking sitcoms, Frasier does come immediately to mind. For the first five years or so, I honestly think it blew Cheers out of the water.

The Hogan Family is a spin-off? All they did was replace Valerie Hartman with Sandy Duncan and change the title.

One of the other greatest spin-off series with much better writing and acting than most shows of its genre is "Knots Landing." This series was quietly a stady mainstay on the CBS Thursday night line-up for 14 seasons. Through the years it weathered some heavy and popular competition running opposite it such as "Hill Street Blues," "St. Elsewhere," and "ER." Although a spin-off, "Knots Landing" was actually written and submitted to CBS FIRST but the network wanted something with more "glitz and glamour" so "Dallas" ended up on the air before "Knots." Even though the series did have some "extraordinary" storylines its focus was always on character. This detail to character and relationships, the excellent writing and acting put it above the rest. The overall quality is evident in comparison to other shows of its kind and is also why it out lasted all of those other types of shows including "Dallas." It is surpassed in prime time longevity by only three TV dramas in American television history: "Gunsmoke" (20 seasons), "Law and Order" (20 seasons to date), and "ER" (15 seasons). "Knots Landing" is tied with "Bonanza" at 14 seasons!

I don't remember "Perfect Strangers" spinning off of another show. "Family Matters" spun off of "Perfect Strangers".

For me, it would be "Good Times", "Maude", and the much-maligned "Hello Larry" (which spun off of "Different Strokes").
