Chocoholic 09-15-2003, 02:05 PM I can't stand to watch Joe in "The Customer is Usually Right". As a cashier myself, I cringe at the way he acted over two stinkin' quarters! He didn't even stop and consider the fact that he might have been wrong. (Because he's the customer and of course they're never wrong  ) Then, to make matters even worse, he didn't even have the balls to go the woman's family and say he was wrong and apologize. I know it's just a TV show, but I see so many idiots like that in the grocery store I work at
Also, Antonio got on my nerves sometimes during the last two seasons. If you think your life sucks so much, then why aren't you doing something to try and improve your situation?
anywho 09-15-2003, 07:36 PM I can't stand Helen at the begining of the third season when she acts crazy and knocks down Joes office two times. I don't know why, but I can't stand Helen when she acts that way.

I agree with you! That was the only time when I actualy disliked Joe. lol.
sometimes one of the characters does something just really annoying, and you just want to give them a swift kick. lol. like, in "Ladies Who Lunch", when Joe says to Helen, "yeah, you wish you over me. you wish you were ALL over me."- the way he says that makes me CRINGE. I wish Helen would have given him a kick to the groin at that moment because it just ticks me off so much. hahaha. but there have been moments like that for each of the characters sometime in the series...
but the episode you just mentioned is the epitome of a time when I actually disliked one of the characters, and it was for the whole episode. lol
pilotguy 09-15-2003, 11:05 PM VERY interesting topic!
There were specific moments when I disliked certain "Wings" characters:
1. When Antonio was treating "The Big Faced Girl" like garbage....He wouldn't take her out on real dates, but rather fed her his leftovers from the fridge and had her spend the evening watching him pay bills. This was NOT the romantic Antonio of earlier episodes who always talked of "the beautiful ladies".
2. When Helen was engaged to Davis, but spent the night with Joe...and then acted like nothing had happened as she ran to meet Davis in NYC the next morning while Joe was making her heart-shaped pancakes! Talk about acting like a BIMBO!
3. I often find myself disliking Joe during his marriage to Helen. Many times he takes her for granted and won't show her a nice time on a special occassion, but rather tries to take the cheap way out....and they hadn't even been married that LONG!
4. I REALLY disliked Alex Lambert in her first episode...what a miserable witch (and I COULD have called her WORSE)!
The show eventually softened the character, and I grew to like her better...but oh, that first "Alex" episode....BRRRRR!
5. I disliked Brian for a LONG time after his breakup with Alex...but not the "hating" kind of dislike, but rather the "annoyed" kind of dislike. As much as I've liked Brian in earlier (and later) seasons, during that "breakup" period, whenever he enters a scene, I find myself thinking, "Oh NO...Here comes that pathetic whiner again! Where can I HIDE?"
That's about it....Roy can be as rude and as mean as he wants...NOTHING that man does can shock me!

ooohh yeah! I forgot about that. That annoyed me too. lol.
nantucket_wings 09-16-2003, 08:34 AM you kindof sound like Joe in your post anywho ...

Dislike Helen? It’s....it’s.....it’s just not done.:)
Actually some of my favorite Helen moments are the beginning of season 3. I absolutely love the first 3 episodes of season 3 when Helen returns from New York and then Joe pays the consequences. But even though Helen was being mighty unfair it still made me laugh.
I can’t think of any examples where I disliked the characters.....even when they had their ups and downs it came across as “real” to me .....kind of like nobody is completely evil or completely good. That’s what gives characters more depth and makes them more interesting so they aren’t just card board cutout bores….but hey, I’m easy.:D
AgtSkye 09-18-2003, 07:02 AM I've never really hated any of the characters. I never cared much for Alex, and Casey was SUPER annoying...but that is pretty much it.

yeah, I agree! even with real people (as opposed to TV characters), they do things once in a while that just make you want to smack them, no matter if they're your best friend, or your or your brother, or your boyfriend.. or whoever. lol.
That's how it is with the characters on Wings- it could be your favorite character, but once in a while they do something that makes you mad or annoyed, or whatever.
losthighway 09-19-2003, 02:19 AM Indeed, great minds think......ah never mind. :)
But it's really true...friends, even really good friends can do unfeeling things or thoughtless things or mean things at times, and not even realize they are doing it…it’s just human nature, which helps to make the characters on Wings more real.;)

I agree.
Janice 09-19-2003, 01:25 PM I'm new to Wings. It's not so much how Brian acts because I think he's a hoot, but they make references to how he ran off with Joe's fiancee.
Unless there's more to that story than I'm aware of, Brian is of questionable moral character in my eyes.
I don't hate him though. It's just sort of always in the back of my mind.

I think that deep down, Brian is a very nice, caring, moral guy. He just doesn't know how to show it very well. He does bend the rules a lot, but he'd never intentionally do anything to hurt anyone. He did learn his lesson when Carol (his wife and Joe's fiancee) ran off with another man.
losthighway 09-19-2003, 06:50 PM Hate to keep harping on this, but oh well, why not?:)
This is exactly why these characters work and why the show works, is because the characters are real, and true to life. Everybody has flaws, everybody makes mistakes and does things they regret. Nobody is perfect. When it comes to matters of the heart all of us have done stupid things at one time or another and it is something that is very difficult to control.
I’m not suggesting or saying if you fall in love with someone that you ignore the fact that they are dating your best friend or married or whatever situation that may exist. But I am saying, when it comes to matters of the heart, the heart can take over and the mind can be left behind. As I said before, Helen’s reaction to Joe worked for me because what she was really doing was showing her passion, her sincere passion for Joe and her pain of the loss of the relationship. Was it wise, was it the right thing to do? Of course not. She overreacted and did a wrong thing, and she admitted as much. But the passion was evident.
Same thing with Brian. We never got the entire story as to how that happened. And how he could do such a thing, but it is still “realistic” in that you can hurt somebody you care for deeply all in the name of love. Even a brother or best friend.
I’ve just gone through this type of a personal ordeal. I’ll try to make a long story short....My two best male friends had a similar experience. One was dating a woman he had dated a few years back and they started dating again. The other friend began to develop a friendship with the woman, and it blossomed into something where he had romantic feelings for the woman. And he made sincere advances towards her letting her know he cared for her. This incident has ruined the friendship between the two and put me in an awkward situation. But the point is, these things happen. I can tell you honestly my friend that made the advance made a horrible decision, and made a horrible mistake. But he is a good and decent person. He has strong morals. But sometimes we act on impulses and feelings that are very strong and very hard to resist. We error, sometimes in very bad ways, but it doesn't mean the person is a jerk or a cad, it means they are human.
But to come full circle on this…that is why these Wings characters are interesting and why at least I relate to them….they are not perfect, they do make mistakes, they are human and they come across as real to me.
Janice 09-19-2003, 09:22 PM You make some good points losthighway, and I agree that the characters on Wings are fallible and human.
However, I truly believe that someone who would do something like that to his own brother has a faulty moral compass. Some people have a stronger sense of what's right and wrong, and others take what they want at all costs. It doesn't make them monsters, but perhaps selfish among other things.
I realize things happen in life, but there are plenty of people who wouldn't do such a thing in a million years.
I know I never would. I'm not a babe in the woods either. I've seen and done a lot. I've known similar situations, but I believe the majority of people wouldn't take off with their brother's fiancee.
losthighway 09-20-2003, 12:02 PM That’s understandable Janice…..comparing this back to my dilemma with my friend I was shocked and extremely disappointed in my friends choices and actions. Although he is still a friend of mine, he has tarnished his character in my eyes and something has been lost that I’ll never get back. I’ll never view him quite the same. Doesn’t mean he isn’t my friend, it just means I don’t view him quite the same because I have lost a level of respect for him by his very actions. Like you, I would never ever do that to a friend or brother.
But at the same time, as I previously mentioned, we are all fallible and capable of doing moronic things, stupid things, and that is what makes us human. In the world of 'Wings' Joe and Brian found a way to forgive and recapture their relationship and why they cared for each other. That doesn’t always happen, but I just like how even in a TV sitcom environment that Wings created characters and situations that mirrored life much more honestly then others.
Kris10m 09-23-2003, 02:40 PM One episode where I didn't really care for Joe was "Hey Nineteen," in which he dated a 19-year old...I thought he was acting pretty pathetic, but I think that was kind of the point. I also found Casey and Brian extremely annoying when they couldn't keep their hands off each other.

lol yeah! eww! I was like, "come on, Joe! the girl is like, 15 years younger than you!" That's a funny episode though.
Chocoholic 09-24-2003, 08:31 AM Joe just seemed so out of character in that episode. I can see Brian or Roy dating a woman who barely is a woman yet, but not Joe. Then again, as Losthighway said, we're only human. We all have our faults and do stupid things we regret later on.

hehe yeah! I remember when I first saw that episode I was thinking that it was somerthing Brian would do, but not Joe!
actually, you know what? did you ever notice that on more than one occasion Brian has dated women who were at least a few years OLDER than him? hmmm.. so maybe Brian wouldn't necessarily be the one to date someone 15 years younger than him... but either way, it was still out of character for Joe.

YES, I've always said this....Brian DEFINITELY had a "Mrs. Robinson" thing for older women!
Remember his former high school teacher? And how about when he dated that nice girl, but there were no "sparks"....but Brian had the hots for the girl's mother! ("You're inviting me to your parents' house for dinner? Is your mom going to be there?).
Plus, let's not forget his fling with Mimsy (Tyne Daly)....she was definitely older than he was....and it was quite obvious that Brian wasn't only interested in her for her money!
Yes, Brian certainly had "Boy Toy Stud" written all over him!

How about that? I said something that made sense.:D
I guess I’m in the minority again, but “Hey 19” is one of my favorite episodes. There were so many great lines in this episode between Joe and Brian I could practically recite all of them. Joe was definitely out of character a little, but I always figured that was kind of the point. It was also another element of how the Wings characters were human.
I can understand how some of the ladies are disturbed by Joe getting involved with a woman so much younger, but from a guys perspective…..if you are in Joe’s shoes….single guy supposedly in your early 30’s and a beautiful woman, even if only 19, shows that kind of interest and flirts with you, you must have some kind of will power to say no. I think Joe was struggling with loneliness, Brian was in a relationship, Helen, a woman he truly cared for was in a relationship, and he saw a chance at a little fun and happiness. I don’t blame him one bit. I remember in the episode he even had a line where Helen’s jealousy was coming out and she was pointing out how Courtney (the 19 year old) was too young for Joe and he said something like, “why can’t I have some fun, you’re in a relationship, Brian’s in a relationship, why not me”.
wingshock 09-24-2003, 09:05 PM Gee, I never thought I'd be defending Brian! :o Because my main gripe about Brian has always been that he's too promiscuous!! .... BUT I must defend him in the Carol-Joe situation.
I lay the blame on Carol. She encouraged Brian. Yes, he was attracted to her... but knowing Brian, he would have tried to ignore his feelings... except that Carol didn't know which man she wanted... CAROL was the main problem.... not Brian, IMO.
Brian was just weak and unable to resist Carol, that's all. He wasn't intentionally stealing his brother's fiancee.
Just my $.02.
Love,
Wing<><

I do like that episode too. I think it's funny. It's just weird that Joe's dating a 19-year-old. And for me, it's not really the fact of the age difference that's weird, I think it's the fact that she's 19 that makes it weird, becase she's stil technically a teenager! lol.
It's like, I don't think a guy in his 30's dating a girl in her early 20's is that weird... well, personally, I wouldn't date a guy who was more than say, 8 years older than me. But still, I can't say I NEVER will, because who knows! you can never say never. lol. (and I JUST realized that that phrase is wrong. if you can never say never, then how can you say that you can *never* say never??? hahaha)
But yeah anyway, I think the thing with this episode that's weird is that the girl isn't even 20 yet! So, if we're talking about a 15-year age difference, a 21-year-old woman dating a 36-year-old guy, for example, isn't quite as weird. Well, I don't think I'd ever date someone that much older than me, but yeah, who knows. and yes, I already said that.
I'm starting to talk in circles, so I'll shut up. hehe

It's funny how a number can make a difference for us, for example, we’re conditioned to think that $9.99 is a deal, while $10 sounds like SO much more.:)
When I was going to school and working part time in a retail store, one of the Commission salesman, who was 39 years old, was dating one of the girls that worked there and she was 19! All together now (oooooooooooohh!):D
Now, that was too much, even for me. And I can see how the teen part of it bothers some….but it’s still funny how 33 to 19 is different compared to say 41 and 27. But I guess it is just that someone at 19 is still considered sooo young and inexperienced. Age ranges do make a difference……33 to 24 is different from say 27 and 18. Even though it’s still 9 years, it’s different.
Joe: Yeah, but Brain she’s 19! What kind of relationship am I going to have with a 19 year old?
Brian: The PERFECT kind. Meaningless, hot, physical and absolutely superficial…..19 is the perfect age, no ticking biological clock, no I need a commitment, no didn’t we do it already this week. :D
AngeFaitore 09-28-2003, 03:19 PM I have this hatred for Brian and Joe and Casey.
I just don't get what's so great about them!
Joe reminds me of the Jerka$$ Homer from later episodes of
"The Simpsons", he never got that stick out of his butt
and Brian... he's just a big hentai (pervert, for theAnime/Manga impared).
Casey, she's nurotic, spoiled and a whiner (she reminds me of Veronica from
Archie Comics)!
Antonio gets a little on my nerves, but once in a while he's funny, same for
Helen and Fay.
There's something I like about Alex, maybe it's because she, too,
loathes the brothers Hackett.
Lowell, well, he's alot like a little boy. His antics are charming.
I like Roy, too. He reminds me of Dr. Robotnik from "Sonic the Hedgehog",
if 'Buttnik owned an airline.
