Disneyland visitor killed in roller coaster accident
9/5/2003 5:33 PM
By: Associated Press

ANAHEIM, California -- Authorities said one person was killed in a roller coaster accident at Disneyland and ten others were injured.

Officials said a locomotive broke loose from a train in a tunnel on Disneyland's Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.

An Anaheim, California city spokesman said the man who died at the scene had to be extricated from the first passenger car where he'd been riding.

Earlier, a hospital reported one victim in critical condition, while police said the injuries ranged from moderate to minor. Eight people were taken to the hospital.

It's also unclear how many people were on the train because some left the area on their own after the accident.

The roller coaster takes people on a twisting, turning ride aboard what is supposed to be a runaway train in the Old West.

holy crap. that was my favorite ride at DL. You'd expect that from Six Flags, but not at Disney:eek:

I've been to that ride a lot of times and when I went on it, it felt like the train could just fall right off it's tracks because it goes so fast and there are all these sudden jerks and turns. I'll avoid that one until they figure out what went wrong.

I just went on it last month! :)

I went on the one at DisneyWORLD about 3 years ago already, but it did feel like I was about to fall off. This is a shocker! At Disney, my God!

That's why I've never ridden on a rollercoaster and never will.

This really surprises me.

The newer rides at Disneyland are all computer controlled, and those computers should detect even the slightest problems and automatically shut down the ride until it can be inspected.

Once, years ago, I was on the Thunder Mountain ride and the computer did just that: it shut down the ride. We were taken off the ride and led out of the whole thing through the control area where the computer consoles are located. No mishaps; no injuries. It was kind of fun, actually. Definitely different.

I think the problems with park rides nowadays are possibly a combination of three things:

1) The rides are getting too fast and furious.
2) The equipment is getting old.
3) People have become too dependent on computers to do the work that would be better served by applying the human touch of observation and intuition.

Very tragic and disturbing.

That is the main reason why I don't like those rides. Anything that leaves the ground I try to avoid. I went to Disneyworld a couple years ago with some friends and while they went on the rollercoasters I just walked around snapping pictures.

Sad news on the roller coaster ride in Disneyland. I used to go on the roller coaster since I was a kid, I'm not going on that ride anymore. I was afraid of heights. In Disneyland, the ride has a few injuries and a death in an accidental ride was worst since Coney Island's Astroland in Brooklyn had the worst injuries on every ride.

I was on Space Mountain once at disneyland (isn't thunder mountain the one where you take the boat to the island that's a rollercoaster- my cousin went on that) in Paris. I swear, it takes alot of persuading to get me into a rollercoaster cos on Space Mountain it felt like only me spinning so fast stopped me falling-the little bars to keep you in are terrible- i've always been afraid of falling out of rides like that- I was on a ride once and my whole legs had slid right out of a ride-it scares me alot alot.

Crazy Train

Crazy, but that's how it goes
Millions of people living as foes
Maybe it's not to late
To learn how to love
And forget how to hate

Mental wounds not healing
Life's a bitter shame
I'm going off the rails on a crazy train

I've listened to preachers
I've listened to fools
I've watched all the dropouts
Who make their own rules
One person conditioned to rule and control
The media sells it and you have the role

Mental wounds still screaming
Driving me insane
I'm going off the rails on a crazy train

I know that things are going wrong for me
You gotta listen to my words
Yeh-h

Heirs of a cold war
That's what we've become
Inheriting troubles I'm mentally numb
Crazy, I just cannot bear
I'm living with something that just isn't fair

Mental wounds not healing
Who and what's to blame
I'm going off the rails on a crazy train

Okay, I'm in a weird mood to post that lyric.

Actually, Disneyland rides scare me. Except for the Indiana Jones ride. I liked that one. An amusement ride disaster is one of the scariest things I can think of. I've even read that the folks at Disneyland try to cover up these mishaps. Don't want to kill people's fun while people are getting killed out there...

There has ony been 3 deaths at Disneyland that was their fault. The 8 others were from the peoples own stupidity(standing up while on the ride, hiding in the monorail tracks, etc). Most of the stories are urban legends.

I like Indiana Jones too. They have a ride like it at Disney World, but its a crappy Dinasour ride.

Yeah indiana jones was prolly the funnest. i dont remember if i went on the big thunder ride, i know i went on some train thing though.

Heh i remember this stupid boat where all the people riding it had to paddle. that was boring. there wasnt anything to see except maybe a few ducks. and when we were about to get off my hand got smashed between the boat and the dock thing, it hurt like hell.

Actually I think more deaths have happened at Disneyland than any other American amusement park. I know at Six Flags over Texas only 1 person has died there. I've looked at lists of people who have died at Disneyland, and not all of them are urban myths. I say if more than even 5 people have died just because of what they did like standing up on a ride, they should make the rides safe enough so that nobody would be able to stand up.

I was at Disneyland a couple years ago in the middle of summer and I remember whenever I was getting on a ride, nobody would come by and check the restaints, like they do at most parks including Six Flags. As soon as everyone sat down they just started the ride. No double checking or nothing. I remember thinking to myself, "Why isn't anyone coming to check if this is down all the way? What if I fell out?!?"

12 people have died at Six Flags Great Adventure alone( My friend broke her arm on batman and robbin and sued:lol: )..only 10 people have died in Disneyland since its opening. They shouldn't have to change the rides because of stupid people who don't follow the saftey spiels.

I stay away from amusement parks! I have always been afraid of roller coasters, Ferris wheels, etc. That's very sad that an accident like that had to happen. I'll pass, thank you very much!omg:

:( It's sad. I was there at DL on Labor Day.... 4 days before the accident? Yeah, I rode it Big Thunder (once, we almost went twice though). I was shocked to hear that this happened... it's really awful about the man who died.

My grandma was totally freaked out that this happened only 4 days after we had gone. "And you actually RODE THAT RIDE!? Oh my goodness!" As scary as it is, all the safety cautions in the world couldn't keep accidents from happening. These things do occur, unfortunately, and we can't always prevent them. It's really awful when they do happen though. :( I feel terrible for the man's family.

I like big rides at carnivals like the kamikaze but i'm scared to death of ferris wheels, if i'm on one and and the seat just barely rocks i'll start screaming, it prolly has to do with my fear of high places. last year me and my friend went on it and whenever we were at the top and the seat rocked like an inch we SCREAMED and there were some boys in front of us that would scream like girls whenever we did  but i HATE it when it stops to let people off, and when it unloads the bottom seats it suddenly moves to get more people off... i always freak out whenever it starts moving.

i think the kamikaze (aka the hammer) is higher than the ferris wheel but it doesnt scare me... prolly cause it goes so fast you're only at the top for a few seconds.

I agree people should follow the rules on rides. That would make things a lot easier.

I wasn't sure how many people have died at other parks, but they need to do whatever they're doing at Six Flags over Texas. 1 death in 40+ years ain't too shabby.

Me too! I'm not afraid of the bigger rides and roller coasters and stuff, but I HATE ferris wheels. I think the reason I hate them so much is because I remember seeing a video on tv of a girl (i think she was from North Carolina or something) and she fell out of the ferris wheel seat and got tangled up in the cords around the center of it.

yikes. i remember hearing some research awhile ago - saying how riding too many rollercoasters can permanently injure you, something about jerking your head around so much that your brain is shaken inside your head. I don't remember all of it, but it did not sound good. I kind of lost my thing for rollercoasters anyway, they just don't really appeal to me anymore. I dunno, maybe I'm just getting too old ;)
