Remember the Juniper Sierra (SP? Hope I spelled it right) episode of CATM? The one where the garage is gonna be torn down to be made into a power plant but Chico & Ed successfully stop it from being torn down & save it? Well I came across this article on the internet. There is a real Juniper Sierra & he put up a cross over 200 yrs ago in CA & now athiests want to take it down. I bet if Freddie were here he'd be upset about that. Here all this time I thought Juniper Sierra was a made up character!
Here is the article:

Thanks, Cheryl, for the info. Being a Catholic, I had heard of Father Serra, but the show told me a little more. Here is a good site on the Franciscan Friar who helped his order establish missions in Mexico and California.

BTW thanks for the info about the happenings in CA. I know this isn't a forum for such discussions, but even if you aren't religious, there is something disturbing about a small group's ability to "rewrite" history. Like it or not, much of our country's history is tied up with religion in one form or another. It saddens me to think that people want to change the past, instead of learning from it. And that is my two centavos.
And on a related note, I was always impressed with the writers of Chico and the Man for trying to make sure things were a correct reflection of the times, the area, and the beliefs of the people they were portraying. I know a lot of people were upset with some of the bigotry portrayed, but unfortunately, that is a part of our history too. It was shows like CATM (and others of the time) that put prejudice in our face and made us think about the way we looked at those who were different. Instead of making fun of Hispanics, I think the show made me more aware and sensitive of those who aren't of the same nationality, religious upbring, political POV, etc. In shining a spotlight on Ed's bigotry of Chicanos, and his conversion by Chico, it taught me tollerance, not hate. Thank you Chico, Ed and everyone associated with the show. :) :thanks:
:soapbox: I'll get down off my soapbox now, don't throw tomatoes, por favor!

It's amazing whatI've learned from watching CATM. Like I recently saw a billboard along the road written in spanish. It said Albagado on it & I knew from watching CATM even tho I don't know Spanish that it was advertising a lawyer to Hispanics! :)

Remember the episode (if anyone can remind me exactly which one it was, I would appreciate it BTW LOL!) in which Chico told Ed he had an uncle who was an "abogado", and Ed asked, "Your uncle is an avocado?!" ROTFLMAO! :happyface

The episode you are thinking of was one of the first ones.... where Chico makes Ed a tequila sunrise and Ed wakes up with a hangover, and Chico had Ed sign a binding contract with him to be his employee for life. It was called, "Second Thoughts". It was also was the one which ended with Chico buying the wooden Indian with the tape recorder on the back of it to advertise the business..... Chico told Ed he had an uncle who was an abogado who told him that Ed was the party of the first part and that the party of the first part didn't have a leg to stand on and he (Chico) wouldn't leave Ed standing there on one leg! LOL

I remember now! That episode was toooo funny! Wasn't that also the one in which we got to hear just about the most we ever did on the show of Freddie's singing? I mean that doo-wop type song that he went into as he talked about how he could tune several cars at once and have them all singing in harmony...
