Honestly, the view that American TV/film has of Britain varies between hilarious and faintly insulting. :) And they're still doing it! Who makes these things, and which part of the UK is it that they've visited?! hawaii five-o 08-12-2003, 06:37 PM Your picture is pretty cool, babalucy. I like the episode where they are stranded in the cabin. babalucy 08-12-2003, 06:39 PM lol, yeah, I just saw that one for the first time today! I loved it! :D LOL at Mickey! *ShortCake* 08-12-2003, 06:49 PM Lucy wants a paris gown is my favorite episode..:) tdr 08-12-2003, 07:44 PM Originally posted by Mickey Anything that doesn't involve the UK! What plot ideas do you propose, and what should they definitely not have delved into? LucyFan 08-12-2003, 08:19 PM Originally posted by babalucy Since the European episodes are playing right now on TVLand, what's your favorite Euro episode? :) Out of the European region (#136-#153, 18 episodes total) of I Love Lucy, these are my favorites: "Ricky's European Booking", "Bon Voyage", "Lucy In The Swiss Alps", "Lucy's Bicycle Trip", and "Return Home From Europe" (episodes #137, #140, #148, #151, & #153). ~LadyJess~ 08-12-2003, 11:19 PM My favorites are Lucy in the Swiss Alps and Return Home from Europe. My favorite quotes from Lucy in the Swiss Alps: Ethel: Fred I have a confession to make. Remember when we got married and I said I was 18? I was 19! Fred: I got news for you, you were 24. Lucy: Ricky, don't you have a confession to make? Ricky: I'm no fool we might be saved! LucyFan 08-13-2003, 04:32 AM Originally posted by ~LadyJess~ My favorites are Lucy in the Swiss Alps and Return Home from Europe. What plot ideas do you propose, and what should they definitely not have delved into? It's not the plots, generally, so much as the way in which the country is portrayed, and the way people behave. It would be like a British show having an episode where somebody goes to America, and no matter where in the country they are, everybody is talking like John Wayne, wearing cowboy hats and boots, and using horses instead of cars. :) It's an odd, old fashioned sterotyping thing, you know? SPLAIN 08-13-2003, 10:14 AM But, let's be fair Mick, those shows were filmed fifty years ago, surely Friends was more to your liking when they went to Britian? I loved the above quotes also, were'nt those guys the best writers ever? I've heard some people say they did not like the European shows as opposed to the Hollywood ones, i liked most of them, but the Bon Voyage with the boat and the helicopter being my all time favorite, Then maybe the Paris ones, the Monte Carlo Casino, then the British ones. Mickey 08-13-2003, 12:12 PM Originally posted by SPLAIN But, let's be fair Mick, those shows were filmed fifty years ago, surely Friends was more to your liking when they went to Britian? No! That's just it! If anything things have got worse... at least ILL had an excuse - that it was the fifties. They were closer to the truth of life in Britain in then. Friends in London was abysmal! There's a new film out "What A Girl Wants" or something, which is Americans in London again, and it's dreadful too. We do not still live in the 1950s! I think Hollywood has this sweet, rose-tinted view of how it imagines Britain once was, and how it wishes it was now, and it makes everything according to that template. Well the truth ain't like that... MagsLovesLucy 08-13-2003, 12:12 PM I love "Lucy in the Swiss Alps" too. My favorite European episodes are "Ricky's European Booking", "Staten Island Ferry", "Bon Voyage", "Lucy Meets the Queen", "Paris at Last", "Lucy in the Swiss Alps", and "Return Home From Europe." It's hard for me to choose just one. *ShortCake* 08-13-2003, 12:23 PM I forgot Lucy goes to Monte Carlo!! thats my other very favorite episode :D SPLAIN 08-13-2003, 12:55 PM Oh ,my God, how could i have fogotten about Staten Island Ferry, the only other time Fred really shines besides The Adagio. And that part where she's asleep and Ricky slaps her awake, that look she had when she realized he just slapped her and she hauls off and belts him puts me away every single time! Mick, all they have to do is watch some of the British shows, that's how we really get a feeling of what it's like for you guys over there. When you see a HUGE photo of Desi, we'll know it's Mick's place. crazyredhead 08-13-2003, 05:02 PM And that part where she's asleep and Ricky slaps her awake, that look she had when she realized he just slapped her and she hauls off and belts him puts me away every single time! What episode are you talking about there, Splain? SPLAIN 08-14-2003, 10:14 AM Straten Island Ferry, she's on the sea sick pills and they've made her so sleepy, she can't take the oath to get her passport, so Ricky slaps her awake, at first she tries to kiss him, then she realizes he just slapped her so she hauls off to try and HIT him back, it's my favorite scene from the European shows. crazyredhead 08-14-2003, 01:16 PM ooh yeah! LOL that was so funny!! Lodee 08-14-2003, 01:31 PM I love that scene, but never considered it a European episode. I consider the boat one the first Europeon one. One scene I love is when Lucy comes out of the trunk on her knees (different episode) and the doctor says "I thought you'd be taller by now" *ShortCake* 08-14-2003, 01:32 PM Originally posted by Lodee I love that scene, but never considered it a European episode. I love that too!! I also love it when Desi uses the trunk as a drum.. and Lucy is in it.. so great!! SPLAIN 08-14-2003, 01:56 PM Yes, definitely a scene where Desi made me laugh, the look on his face when he comes in and sees that idiot doctor singing and dancing to Skip to Ma loo my darlin, cracks me up every single time. The reason i consider Staten Island Ferry one of the European eps is because in the European boxed set, it's on there, let's face it, no passport, no trip! *ShortCake* 08-14-2003, 01:57 PM Originally posted by SPLAIN Yes, definitely a scene where Desi made me laugh, the look on his face when he comes in and sees that idiot doctor singing and dancing to Skip to Ma loo my darlin, cracks me up every single time. LOL " I dont know whether to thank you or punch you right in the nose!" - I love that quote from that episode! haha. SPLAIN 08-14-2003, 02:03 PM You know Lucy, like me, was very claustrephobic, so she absolutely HATED being in that trunk, i only hope they had pullaway drawers so she could breathe in there. I loved the part where she put all her face parts in the hole one by one and said, put them all together and they spell Lucy McGillicuddy! crazyredhead 08-14-2003, 02:05 PM yeah, I read that she actually had a panic attack in that episode. im claustrophobic too. most people are.. When you see a HUGE photo of Desi, we'll know it's Mick's place. :) Freddie Mercury actually. SPLAIN 08-14-2003, 02:50 PM Could you SPLAIN that one for me? Queen's lead singer was a Desi fan? *ShortCake* 08-14-2003, 08:48 PM I dont blame her.. i wouldnt wantto be stuck in a trunk either! MagsLovesLucy 08-14-2003, 08:49 PM Me neither! Lucy did a lot of things on her shows that most other actresses would have said, "No way!" to. Mickey 08-15-2003, 05:04 AM No Splain dear. I meant when you see the huge photo of Freddie, you'll know it's my place. I don't have any pictures of Desi. :) SPLAIN 08-15-2003, 09:44 AM Sorry! You know i keep wanting to buy those DVD compilations of their work, Queen made a real impact in the music industry, i keep being tempted to refresh my memory by getting the BEST of Queen or the farewell concert, any thoughts on which i should focus on? You might not have a pic of Desi at your home, but the one on your avatar is really something. Mickey 08-15-2003, 10:35 AM Cool, isn't it! Queen. Well, personally I'd recommend all their albums! Their Greatest Hits I, II and II package is probably the best place to start, though of course Greatest Hits don't always mean greatest tracks! Live At Wembley in 86 is now out on a wonderful new DVD, and Greatest Hits I is out on DVD too, with II coming in time for Christmas. All worth getting. Terrific extras too. But then I'm slightly biased! SPLAIN 08-15-2003, 11:11 AM YOU???? BIASED???? Aww come on! Seriously, i find that sometimes those concerts are the worst, i prefer the tracks they worked on thoroughly, and have made alsmost perfect. Many times i've attended concerts where the singers do these spaced out versions of hits and they stink, so i'll probably get the greatest hits then as opposed to the farewell concert, how abou that tribute concert they did for him? Yeah, that's an awesome pic of Desi all right, you always have to bring it back on topic or they wrap your knuckles! Mickey 08-15-2003, 12:09 PM Queen never did a bad concert. They worked damn hard to get their songs sounding right when they played live, and they never interpreted them too differently. (Nothing like Springsteen doing that acoustic 'Born In The USA' - yuck, yuck, yuck!) They couldn't do the multi-layered harmonies live, obviously, but Freddie and Roger did a tremedous job nonetheless. I've not heard two better male voices in popular music. The tribute concert is good. Nice atmosphere. Roger put a hell of a lot of work into setting that up, and everybody wanted to take part, so there's a hell of a lot of talent. The songs do sound different in that though, because most performers couldn't handle the songs with the vocal range Freddie had, and they had to be altered, and often the key changed too. George Michael does a terrific Somebody To Love, but of course it's not the same. The Greatest Hits is generally the place to start though of course. Um, yes. ILL. I'm sure there's a link there somewhere to bring it back on topic. [Coughs discreetly]. Sorry dawsongirl... :) SPLAIN 08-15-2003, 01:00 PM Well, you could have wrapped it all up by adding that YOU putting Freddie and Roger ahead of Desi in the male singer catagory was unusual to say the least! Mickey 08-15-2003, 02:09 PM Well I was talking about popular music. Does Latin jazz come under popular? I'm never sure about musical categorisations. And Desi wasn't a great singer. Good, yes. A lot of power, and a hell of a lot of personality and enthusiasm, but not a great singer. Freddie Mercury and Roger Taylor on the other hand... :) :king:  Shame the little royal emoticon is a king, but he can be in drag for the occasion! SPLAIN 08-18-2003, 10:43 AM Which i guess confirms what i've always thought, that Desi's drive and ambition, and tenacity and charisma and energy and love of performing made him SEEM better than you give him credit for as far as singing is concerned. Mickey 08-18-2003, 12:06 PM Possibly, yes. But he was still better than Lucy! SPLAIN 08-18-2003, 02:19 PM Oh, you always have to ruin it don't you? Desi was never better than Lucy at anything they both tried. Oh sorry, you're right, nobody could outdrink, outgamble or out "the other word" anybody in the world, including Colin Farrell! Mickey 08-18-2003, 04:18 PM Oh I think Richard Harris and Peter O'Toole could give it a pretty good go! And as for "the other", could anybody alive ever beat Warren Beatty?! crazyredhead 08-18-2003, 04:27 PM Oh, you always have to ruin it don't you? Desi was never better than Lucy at anything they both tried. Oh sorry, you're right, nobody could outdrink, outgamble or out "the other word" anybody in the world, including Colin Farrell! umm..yes he was.. he was a better producer and behind-the-scenes worker than Lucy was..much better. I don't have time to name 1000 more stuff...lol ;) j/k Lucy was awesome at stuff too. SPLAIN 08-18-2003, 04:40 PM Yes he was a genius business man, sold the I Love Lucy show to CBS for 4 million so he could buy a broken down studio called RKO and rename it after himself only to see it falter, till his wife saved it. He was so great behind the scenes that they had to ask him any business decisions before ten as he was too drunk after that. Touche on Peter OToole and Richard Harris Mickey, you could have added Burton, you didn't, why? Because he hated Lucy? crazyredhead 08-18-2003, 04:43 PM Yes he was a genius business man, sold the I Love Lucy show to CBS for 4 million so he could buy a broken down studio called RKO and rename it after himself only to see it falter, till his wife saved it. Touche on Peter OToole and Richard Harris Mickey, you could have added Burton, you didn't, why? Because he hated Lucy? geez, what's ur problem with Desi?? And I don't know how you came up with the notion that Lucy saved it. She wouldn't know where to start. Mickey 08-18-2003, 04:43 PM Touche on Peter OToole and Richard Harris Mickey, you could have added Burton, you didn't, why? Because he hated Lucy? No, just because I don't know much about him! I could also have mentioned David Niven and Errol Flynn, certainly for the drinking. Now see, there's another for the 'actors behind the scenes behaviour' discussion. Errol Flynn's autobiography talks about him having done a stint as a slave trader, believe it or not. He comes across as a bit of a bastard, but I still enjoy all those swashbucklers he used to make. Niven was just totally cool. :) And calm down. He's just kidding about Desi. SPLAIN 08-18-2003, 04:45 PM Niven was class personified. We're joking around here kid, relax will ya? crazyredhead 08-18-2003, 04:47 PM gawd, sorry Splain, but I can't never tell whether you're kidding or not. lol Mickey 08-18-2003, 04:54 PM There's one sure way to tell. If he wasn't joking, and he was seriously being horrible about Desi, I'd have hopped on a plane to Canada and broken all his fingers so he couldn't do it anymore... Basic rule, assume he's joking. crazyredhead 08-18-2003, 06:11 PM LOL okay.. SPLAIN 08-19-2003, 10:55 AM Look, being hooked on Lucy should have made you learn to see the funny things in everything, life's too short otherwise! |
