Once you get past Ed talking Mr. Ed was a surprisingly depthful show, they had many adult elements. I'm serious. Sometimes BM was way too serious for a situation comedy. I'm serious here too.

That what made the show special, because it was a unique combination of being both serious and funny in a dry sense of humor kinda way.

Foxy, I hate comedies that suddenly get too depressing. BM sometimes did!

Barney Miller was an unique blend of a show that was a combination of a comedy and drama theme to their episodes

I remember one ep Liz (Barney's wife) was crying in a really sad way. This is weird and wrong for a situation comedy. I new someoe who was a big fan of this show and even that individual changed the channel on it when it got too depressing (and Jesus as my witness I don't mean myself). The show might have been better as a drama. Reminds me of the 1980 film comedy Stir Crazy, another show about law enforcement that should have been better as a drama than a comedy. I'll tell you something some tv producer once said. He said kids don't expect inane sitcoms anymore (like say Get Smart or Mr. Ed). Kids have been totally ruined by sitcoms that try to mirror reality and fail miserably. He was right! Mash, All In THe Family, Barney Miller and a few others have been largely responsible for this mirror-reality-failed-sitcom trend. Taking a tv too show too seriously and trying to have it mirror reality is foolish. Its just a tv show. Barney Miller is just a tv show. Its a whole fiction and nothing more. At least we aren't as stuck with BM as we are with the last eight years of MASH. Thank God.

There are other episodes that upset me as well and I am a big fan, one episode was called The Harris Incident, when Det. HArris was shot at by two white police officer and Harris treated the other detectives like scum, especially Wojo, who was trying to cheer him up and Harris ignored him, then Wojo broke down and told him off, which I thought was awesome for Wojo, because Harris was being kinda of a jerk in my eyes

This kind of blanket statement is kind of ridiculous. Those shows definitely set a trend for the "dramady," but there's plenty of inane stuff still out there. And Barney Miller didn't really try to mirror reality too hard. I mean, it's a sitcom about cops. How close to reality can it possibly be?

I really think almost everything on BM would have been better suited to Hill Street Blues (or some more dramatic show like that). Our dramas could have turned realistic looking our comedies didn't have to. There is usually not much humor in real life. Often comedies trying to imitate real life forget they are comedies after a while. Remember on AIF when Edith got nearly raped.

And Egregious Girl, BM most certainly was trying to imitate real life. I like the inconsistent elements on BM, they're reminders that its just a sitcom. BTW I was practically quoting a real life tv producer who said that about inane sitcoms.

I guess my point was just--it's just a sitcom. I don't take any of them too seriously, Barney Miller included. Some serious things happened on the show sometimes, but mostly it was just a squadroom full of very silly people.

All in The Family started a trend with bringing reality into comedy shows. During the 70s-80s, it was all the rage. Trouble with that is that most of us watch TV to get away from reality, for the most part (exceptions being documentaries, biographies & educational shows). When I tuned into Barney Miller, I wanted to laugh. There was one BM show: "Homicide", that left me depressed; a recurring character had been murdered, among other things. Yeah, it makes you think, but I don't really want to "think", I want to be entertained. It's true that we pay our entertainers (including sports heroes) more than our firefighters, physicians, teachers, and others. I think that is because we value what relieves us from day-to-day reality. Sorta like drugs and alcohol, etc. But as far as sitcoms go, Barney Miller was still one of the best written and the cast ensemble superb.

I dont believe they will replace it. If you check the tvland schedule it lists Mr.Ed at different times but it is not sceduled for when BM is on.

I remember when Mr. Ed was on N@N back in the late 80's, Barney Miller is just on hold for a while to bring in new shows, it will be back ;)
