View Full Version : Recommend unknown films
webuster 07-29-2003, 02:39 PM Can everyone post like a list of some films they liked that weren't well known or big name hits- that were more like film festival movies or low profile?
1: Donnie Darko- not many ppl saw this though it was a FOX release- it's complicated, I watched it once- and I'm going to buy it now- one of those addictive, underrated flics.
2: Shock Treatment- Musical that doesn't get much recognition- even from FOX who have failed to release the dvd- overshadowed by it's predecessor 'Rocky Horror'. Completely makes a satire of TV culture- and predicted the reality tv craze.
3: Waking Life- fantastic new-tech rotoscoped animation- filmed real ppl using cameras and colouring the cells- creating a work of 'moving art'. All about someone trying to wake up from dreaming- all the while everyone in his dreams give him their philosophies on life. Really puts you on a philosophical high hours after viewing
4: Dark City: Some compare it to the matrix- but it's entirely different and great. About a man who has his memory replaced- only to find he is part of an alien experiment in a giant spaceship thing- aliens stop time at midnight and change the buildings in the city with amazing telekenesis- while forcing a human doctor to concoct memories to inject into humans. The whole 'city' is in darkness. But this man isn't stopped by the aliens time-freezing, and witnesses what they are doing. Great film
Jenya 07-29-2003, 05:26 PM Hello Webuster:
If you are interested in Science Fiction movies, I would recommend watching 2001: A Space Odyssey and Solaris (the original 1971 Russian film). There are similarities and opposites to these two movies-you will be asking yourself all kinds of questions. If you don't mind long movies and good stories, then I think you will enjoy watching both of these films.
Bye!
From Jenya;)

onefortheroad 08-02-2003, 03:40 AM Just Before Dawn- Very rare underrated mountain man slasher from 1980. kind of like a mix between deliverance, texas chainsaw massacre, hills have eyes, and friday the 13th
onefortheroad 08-02-2003, 03:42 AM Planet Of (The) Dinosaurs- cheesy late 70s time warp dinosaur flick with great stop motion effects for it's time. unlike other similar movies from the same time with horrible effects such as The Day Time Ended...

i recommend that one too, its a great movie
M82A1 08-03-2003, 10:42 AM "The Boondock Saints" - It's a 1999 movie, but when I ask people if they've heard of it, all they say is: "Huh?" But it is an Awsome movie.
Here's a quote from that movie:
Conner MacManus: Now you will receive us.
Murphy MacManus: We do not ask for your poor, or your hungry.
Conner MacManus: We do not want your tired and sick.
Murphy MacManus: It is your corrupt we claim.
Conner MacManus: It is your evil that will be sought by us.
Murphy MacManus: With every breath, we shall hunt them down.
Conner MacManus: Each day we will spill their blood, 'til it rains down from the skies.
Murphy MacManus: Do not kill. Do not rape. Do not steal. These are principles which every man of every faith can embrace.
Conner MacManus: These are not polite suggestions, these are codes of behavior, and those of you that ignore them will pay the dearest cost.
Murphy MacManus: There are varying degrees of evil. We urge you lesser forms of filth, not to push the bounds and cross over, in to true corruption, into our domain.
Conner MacManus: For if you do, one day you will look behind you and you will see we three, and on that day you will reap it.
Murphy MacManus: And we will send you to whatever god you wish.

Yeh, I really wanna see Phantom of the Paradise, alot of people recommended it to me before. Apparently it's like a mini-cult hit now, I'm not sure though if it was well known in the 70's.
You don't mean Phantom of the Opera, do you? I've seen that play 6 times.
Phantom of The Paradise is a 1970's update of 'The Phantom of the Opera' story, it's also a musical, but the songs are much more rock and roll.

Wow, I'll definitely rent it. Does it have the Andrew Lloyd Webber songs? I have the Phantom CD, and I love it.
I've been hearing for about two years that they're going to remake The Phantom of the Opera movie with Antonio Banderas as the Phantom, but it still hasn't happened.
Brian Damage 08-03-2003, 12:10 PM El Mariachi- It is a prequel to Antonio Banderas' movie Deperado. It is set in Mexico where a drug Kingpin mistakes a Mariachi player for a deadly hitman and tries to kill him.

No, the Phantom of the Paradise isn't like Lurhmans Romeo and Juliet were only surroundings are updated- the songs for Phantom of The Paradise are different to the songs in Lloyd Webbers Musical.

barwars 08-05-2003, 01:48 PM Wagon's East -- John Candy's last movie about a wagon leader bringing pioneers back to the "promised east", not a very well known movie, but has some VERY funny parts.
barwars 08-05-2003, 01:51 PM European Vacation -- Starring Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo, the least known from the Vacation series, and doesn't get the recognition it deserves, although not as good as the original nor Christmas Vacation, its miles ahead of Vegas Vacation.

webuster 08-06-2003, 02:07 PM I'm not sure if the films were blockbusters at the time, but they're pretty unheard of now
1)Down and Out in Beverly Hills-Bette Midler,Nick Nolte, Richard Dreyfuss
2)Ruthless People- Bette Midler, Danny DeVito, Judge Reinhold
Ruthless People is my favourite of the two- one real fantastic funny film- Danny DeVito's character is a role DeVito was born to play.

Hey steve, is the Alice in wonderland computer game (NOT disney) based on the 1999 movie? In the begginning her parents are burned alive inside their house, and she was the only one to get out....so she goes into a catatonic state and is sent to an asylum...and then wonderland is really screwed up..

haha. No. In the beginning Alice has to sing this song and she doesn't want to so she wonders off. She ends up following the Rabbit and....you know how the story goes. Martin Short is hilarious as Mr. Hatter. George Wendt plays alongside Robbie Coltrain as Tweedledum and Tweedledee.

Yeah it's one of my favorites. George Wendt was great in this film. My favorite part is when Arliss and George are in the office of thewoodshop room and are talking about a former studesnt Mary. haha.
webuster 08-08-2003, 03:27 PM That version of Alice in Wonderland with Martin Short's been on Hallmark a couple of times- one of my friends says it's a good (we were talking about how the author was on drugs writing the book- Through the Looking Glass is a good book by the way- but 'Alices Adventures'- I still haven't read) film. As for the computer game- it's very sinister (I played a demo, but those card guards are difficult- the cat is funny with his ear-ring) and apparently they're making it into a movie. I heard it was posted on some directors website for a while about it and I even heard who was playing Alice- it's slipped my mind now but I'll try find out).
