dvdempire.com now lists both the First and Second season boxed set on their website.

I have advised Amazon that their information is outdated. They have confirmed that it will be updated shortly to reflect the correct availability date and show the availability of the Second season, too.

Stop by my website for a look at the cool packaging for both Season one and Season Two. I have also listed the bonus footage included in each set.

Thank you, DVD (headwalnut), This is news we have been anxious to hear! I am, however, still waiting for Doug Denoff to update his site so we can order from him. I believe he deserves our loyalty.

This is good news.

Before I go ahead, though, I'd like to know the status of seasons 3-5. I believe these shows are collections, and before I invest that much money, I'd like some assurances we won't be left high and dry as we were with MTM.

Good point, Joe F. Doug Denoff has assured us that there will be all 5 seasons. We have expressed this same concern to him in the past. It is a valid one. I've been watching my MTM season 1 dvds this week, feeling frustrated that there won't be any more.

I understand too, Joe. But the only way to ensure that the other seasons will be reproduced for sale is to take the gamble and buy the one's in the initial offer. No guarantees. I know it bites, but that's the way things work in business. Good sales generate more product.
Believe me, I'm as anxious and hopeful as everyone else for a full "158!"

Steve is absolutely correct. There are NO guarantees that we will get seasons 3 thru 5. Although Doug wants to make sure all 158 will come out, I don't think even he can guarantee anything.

The best hope we have of seeing all the seasons is to buy the first 2 when they come out in a couple of months. If sales are low, we might not get the other 3. Then again, it's possible that Image may have already committed to manufacturing all the disks, regardless of sales! We don't know because we aren't on the inside (any Image exec is free to post here and tell us that we have nothing to worry about  ).

Also, I've got it on good authority that the MTM season sets are absolutely DEAD in the water! That's a shame. I, like Lolac and others here, have season 1 and often wish we'd have gotten more. But the execs decided the sales for season 1 were way too poor to create a second season set.

So let that be a lesson to all of us DVDS fans. Buy those puppies the day they come out!!!!

It's a sad little catch-22: I would sometimes ask people why they didn't buy MTM season 1 (or season 1 of some other show) and be told that they were waiting to make sure that the other seasons would come out. But of course, it's precisely because people didn't buy season 1 that the other seasons are not coming out. (BTW, I heard that Fox, expecting MTM to sell well, had already prepared some extras and remastering work for season 2 -- but the sales of season 1 were so disappointing that they couldn't justify the expense of releasing it.)

I can't really afford to buy both DVD-on-DVD sets at once, but I will save up for one set, get the other as soon as I can save up for that, and encourage others to buy the sets. I think we all want to see the complete series, but I don't think we can expect a company to release a complete series unless the first releases make back their cost.

Which brings up a question: One thingI heard about the flop of the MTM season 1 set is that consumers weren't willing to pay for a set that was more expensive than other sitcoms from the same era (such as M*A*S*H). Of course, the reason for the higher price is the incredible job Fox did on the extras: The documentary, commentaries, etc. The question is, is it better to release a series without any extras -- leading to a less-than-stellar presentation but a lower sales price? I don't know, but when a season 1 set comes out with extensive extras, I always worry that it might have priced itself out of season 2.

THis may seem to be coming from a whiney teenagers point of view, but thats because it is.

I think its totally UNFAIR Seasons 2-7 of TMTMS aren't coming out, and I will probably be complaining the rest of my existance and then some. The prices WERE too high, but comin' Fox!

More on DVD DVDs later, I have to go...

I did buy MTM Season 1. Inside was a slip of paper telling us to watch for Season 2 this March.

They know a good portion of the sales depend on the knowledge that the whole series will some day soon be available.

Sorry, but I'm sitting this one out until there are solid promises. Get fooled once, shame on them. Get fooled twice, shame on me.

Do you think it is a good idea for a company to put out product that doesn't make back its cost? More to the point, if you were running a DVD division, would you release more seasons of a series if the first season flopped? I don't like entertainment companies any more than the next person, but they're not running a charity or a TV preservation society.

Sorry, but I'm sitting this one out until there are solid promises. Get fooled once, shame on them. Get fooled twice, shame on me.

No one can guarantee to release more seasons of the show, not unless we can guarantee them that they'll make their money back -- and the only way to do that is to buy the first sets. If enough people take an "all or nothing" attitude, and demand that companies guarantee the whole series whether or not they can sell it -- then there will be no more sets. Shame indeed.

My point is that with MTM, they told us seasons would be released every six months, went so far as to include a note in the Season 1 box telling us when they planned to release Season 2.

Of course this isn't a charity, and they should be entitled to profit.

If they weren't happy with the financial results, they should have tried changes, Perhaps a lower price on Season 2. Perhaps going to the rights holders and telling them they have to charge a lower fee.

The bottom line is that the package itself probably costs about $5 to make. Distribution would add another $1-3, depending on the volume. There's money to be made, depending on royalties and expectations. If they lost money on Season 1, there's plenty of room to make changes so that wouldn't happen on Season 2, even with a price cut. They didn't even market the set, which probably helped lead to the disappointing sales.

A lot of these companies (and this is their right, of course) can't see the future past the next six months. They have no problem making a promise one year, and breaking it the next.

All I'm saying is that we need to get the message out that we (and, obviously, this may not apply to all of us) want the full series, and we're going to feel burned if that never becomes available. That might put pressure on Fox and others to market, price and negotiate fees in a very different manner.

What made me very excited about Doug's project (and it's still on his web site - a promise that still looks like it may be unfulfilled) was that he was going to make all 158 episodes available in a set. I actually haven't watched DVD on TVLand for about two years, anticipating this set.

Do you mean like, write letters/email/call the company and tell them or...am I missing something (LOL and I usually do)...?

I can't wait for it to be released. I'm probably going to buy Season 2 first. I don't have the money for both, and I like season 2 better than 1. Its kind of weird that they are releasing seasons 1 and 2 on the same day. At least we'll have 2 seasons if they decide not to release the rest.

I have received my Season One set of the DVDS DVDs and they are absolutely awesome!

For starters, you are going to love the packaging, lenticular, and slim line cases - and that's before you ever open the DVD case! The inserts of each of the cases are great and also have episode descriptions.

Once you drop the DVD in your player, it takes off and plays the DVDS theme and a montage of photos (from the classic opening).

Once the opening finishes, then you get your choice of watching all the episodes, a single episode (or any segment of an episode) or viewing the "extras" - which includes bonus footage, interviews, and/or an episode specific photo gallery. Very cool!

The digital reproduction and quality is fanatastic!! Here's to a giant thumbs up!!! And I most certainly still have my sense of humor.

David,

I'm very envious that you've already received your set. Since the street date isn't until next Tuesday, I presume you got yours thru some "connections." I know my set is in the mail as of today and I've got a shot at getting it Monday instead of Tuesday (it will depend on where it was shipped from), but I'm really surprised anyone got it this early.

It sounds awesome and I can't wait!!!! Thanks for that update!

You say "slim line" cases, does that mean its similar to the Family Guy cases??

I hope so, because if not, itll take up a LOT of space on my shelf.

I am not familiar with the Family Guy cases.

But these cases are about half the thickness of a "typical" DVD plastic case.

Thanks for the info!
So, they are the same size as the Family Guy DVDs.

Thats good to hear, I cant wait until Tuesday.

Actually.... I can.

Dear David, I cannot WAIT for my 2 sets to come this week. We on this board are wondering, however, why there has been virtually no marketing of these sets. Do you know why?

Pardon my incredible ignorance but what is a lenticular? I'm sure I will say  when you tell me! Lolac

headwalnut
10-20-2003, 08:13 PM
The lenticular is the "image" on the front of the package. Actually, it is a series of several images (similar to 3D baseball cards of many years ago). The baseball cards were only two images - but the technology today allows for a series of separate images to simulate "motion".

The Season One lenticular is Dick tripping over the ottoman. Moving the box from side to side, you will see Dick standing behind the ottoman and slowly falling over the ottoman onto the floor. VERY cool technology!

Season two features Laura sliding down the pile of walnuts, and so on.

So there's the quick explanation.

Hey David,

I've got a question for you: Do you have any update on where we stand with regards to the remaining three seasons? Are they set in stone to come out next year, or is there still a possibility it might not happen if sales aren't what they (Image, Brownstein) expected?
