1) What state(s) do you think is/are the most overrated? and why?

2) What state(s) do you think is/are the most underrated? and why?

1. I haven't been to any overrated states yet, so I couldn't tell ya. :(

2. North Dakota is VERY VERY underrated. We have a LOT of unoccupied land and it's very nice and beautiful up here! Don't worry, we're just like you guys - we have malls and everything. We don't have the upscale stuff, but we do have Wet Seals and all those trendy stores. The largest city here is Fargo with 90,000+ people. The whole STATE has a population of 600,000 people. And it's only a few hours' drive from Minneapolis, something you definitely can't beat. :D

1. Overrated would probably have to be California. (Or, at least, LA, because thats the only part I've been to) What's so wonderful about the crowds?

2. Underrated would be Iowa, my state. :D Sure, it's boring, but we get by.

Got to disagree somewhat, Topanga. I went to California on business several times in the 80s, both North and South, and loved it.

I went to undergraduate and graduate school in Cleveland, and visited friends there in succeeding years, and found it a very uneventful sort of place.

Well, I live in NH, and we never seem to get any recognition. Yes, we're a small state, but we love too!!

Mass, because well, everyone always compares it to NH etc. (well Northern Mass/ Southern NH)

I've been to Minnesota a million times (I live in North Dakota), and I think it gets enough recognition because Josh Hartnett is from Minneapolis. I've been to Minneapolis a lot and it is such a nice city. The people there are soooo nice! It's the perfect Midwestern city to live in. :)

I don't think that South Carolina is overrated. I've been there 3 times and love it, if I was going to move anywhere it would be there. That's just my opinion though.

I haven't been to many states but I think some that are underrated are Maryland, Ohio, and Michigan. I've always like visitng both Maryland and Ohio and even though I've complained about hating Michigan, it really is a nice place to live. Sure sometimes you have to use the heat and AC in the same day but you get used to it!

1) New York. It doesn't seem any different than any other midwestern state. So it has NYC...big deal. It still snows.

2) Iowa. Because everyone thinks all we do here is grow corn and watch cows graze. WE HAVE BIG CITIES WITH MAJOR ATTRACTIONS!!! We are not hicks!!!!

OVERRATED: New York. Ever since 9/11 everyone thinks it's the perfect place where everyone gets along. :o

UNDERRATED: California.

People just judge Cali simply on L.A. People forget that we are a beautiful combination, of desert, mountains, beaches, etc.- all in one. Other than L.A., we got other great underated cities such as, Bakersfield, Fresno, Sacramento, San Fransisco, Visalia, etc.

People also forget than we ALONE are the 5th biggest economy in the world.

I don't know too much about rating The United States:(

But I believe a lot of Quebeckers think they are something special. The last provincial government was trying to push seperation from the rest of North America. Some Quebeckers hate Americans--and these same people hate Canadians with a passion.

So as a person who lives in Canada, I think Quebec is way overated.

I think the most underated province would be Manitoba.:)

I agree 10000% percent. I have lived her all my life and am finally about to get out of the God forsaken state!!

We only have 2 seasons, hot and hotter!! Other states are starting to cool down for the winter, I swear we are getting hotter!! Yesterday at 11 a.m. it was almost 90 degrees out!! UGH!!

People always say there is sooooo much to do here. You have beaches and South Beach. Well, yeah but you can only do that so many times until it gets real old, real quick. I can count on 1 hand the number of times I have been to the beach in the last 10 years and still have 5 fingers left over!!

I think the most underrated state is Texas. There is so much to see and do there. I spent many summers there when I was a kid and never ran out of things to do!

California seems to be at the top of any overrated list, but I'm not movin' anywhere else in the near future. It's not crowded everywhere, in fact, in most places in California, it's pretty empty. We have beautiful beaches, a Mediterranean climate, the Wine Country up in Napa, the mountains, etc. California has its "faults" (including earthquake faults) but I like it here.

New Jersey has to be the most underrated state. It's been taking a bad rap for years. The most common myth is that the whole state is just one big urban sprawl. Not true. Great beaches, beautiful mountains, farms--plus one of the best educational systems in the country--in that little state which is only 150 miles from north to south. (I'm somewhat biased, as I spent much of my childhood there.) It's not just Mafia hitmen on Route 22, like on the Sopranos.

I can see mentioning underrated states. But overrated? If it's considered overrated, than it only means it has so much to offer and you haven't seen it all.
Being a Californian and a southern Californian, I live in the perfect place. I can drive 40 minutes to the mountains and in the winter see the snow and then drive to the beach and enjoy the sun ALL IN THE SAME DAY. How awesome is that? Snow and then beach. I could then drive 15 minutes into Malibu and be on the coast and have some seafood at some little dive or go to the trendy spots and hope to see a celeb. I could drive for 45 mins. to the east and hit Hollywood/Los Angeles and there are a bajillion things to do there. Or, just take a drive inland to the valleys. Another cool drive is either up the coast to Santa Barbara (which we do often, almost every other week) or down the coast to Malibu and head to Santa Monica. Highway 1 is the BEST!

Underrated like North Dakota as my dear friend posted is a good example. I mean, you think, North Dakota??? But I love open air, mountains, scenery, and all that good stuff. When you live in the city you appreciate places like that.

That's completely true. I think most people percieve New Jersey as being a big industrial park or something, but it really isn't. There are urban-esque areas for sure, but they are a lot more isolated then people think.

New York isn't overrated. It's perfect. I know I don't live in the city, but even Upstate is really amazing. I've never really been to a state that's overrated. And I've been to a lot of states.

Okay yeah- Cape Cod IS overrated to a certain extent- but the Cape is beautiful. I have several relatives who live down there full year/summers, so I practically grew up on the Cape. Overrated: Tennessee, Arkansas, Florida, New York, Hawaii and California.

Underrated: Oklahoma, Alabama, Mississippi, Missouri, Pennsylvania, New England(6 states), Montana, Idaho and Arizona.

Severly underrated, even though it should be overrated: Texas

Want to know why I consider Texas to be soo severly underrated? Stereotypeing and not truly understanding the state and its peoples is why. People think Texas is only a state of cowboys, oil, oil derricks, and table-flat plains. Texas has beaches, big cities, various forests, swamps, various mountains, deep caves, canyons, valleys, rivers, lakes and a rugged hill country in the heart of the state that can easily rival Apallachia or the Missouri/Arkansas Ozark Mtn region. Not to mention all the oil-studded table-flat Kansas plains within. (LOL) And the Texas people aren't all cowboys, either. There's also Texans who are true southerners, true midwesterners, true hillbillies, and just plain ordanery types. There's nerdy types, hippies, stoners, and even yankee types down in Texas society, too. Texas population is what you'd call the ultimate cultural melting pot. Yet, outsiders still think it's all about cowboys and the one they call J.R. (LOL)

I think Kansas is underrated. It's got its highly populated areas (KC, KS area...I've been to Topeka once...seemed okay from what I remember), and its quiet small town areas. It also hails the MOST BORING stretch of road on earth...The Kansas Turnpike between KC and Wichita. It's SO BORING and SO DESOLATE that you just have to see it. So much nothing...more than Nebraska.

I also like Missouri I guess. I spend enough time there a year seems like. But 35 South...yeah, Missouri doesn't take care of their roads very well. Awful.

I dunno, the stretch of road between Denver and Lincoln, NE makes me want to gouge my own eyes out with chopsticks. The mopst horrible 8 hours I've ever spent on the road. The biggest town between the two is like barely 1,000 people and the average distance between gas stations (or any exit, for that matter) is like 30 - 40 miles. Iowa isn't much better :p, but at least the distance between cities isn't as big. Omaha/Council Bluffs, Des Moines, Iowa City, and Davenport are like 2 hours apart.

True. Seen one cow, you've seen them all. But at least there are signs of life.

Okay, sounds like the Kansas Turkpike and Denver - Lincoln are tied.

He must have been on I-20 eastbound, huh! Nuthing there at all. True stereotypical Texas landscapes. Just plain pancake-flat treeless lands they call the Great Plains that stays that way from near the I-10 intersection all the way to near Fort Worth with no break in the scenery except Abeline and Midland/Odessa(which is bypasses, btw). I-10 in west texas west of I-20 at least has mountains to look at/stare at with nothing else, though.
