View Full Version : What is it "really" like living in California peter may 07-12-2003, 09:38 AM just wondered what you californian people think of living there? fr00ti 07-12-2003, 11:38 AM I lived there, I hated it. ¤I Love Clay Aiken¤ 07-12-2003, 11:42 AM Personally, I would never want to live in CA. Yah, Id love to go to LA and visit, but the weather would piss me off. I like my Noreasters.:D peter may 07-12-2003, 11:51 AM Originally posted by .:mads:. I lived there, I hated it. Why did you hate it? fr00ti 07-12-2003, 11:53 AM Originally posted by peter may Why did you hate it? Because Im originally from the south and its completely a different world out there. I felt out of place for most of the time I lived there, and I only lived there a year. It took me that whole time to be able to make any friends. I was really an outcast there for a long time. Mijada 07-12-2003, 12:19 PM I think it all depends on which part of California you live in and what you like to do. My sister visited Palm Springs last year and loved it. The weather was nice every day and she said the people there were more open minded than people here in Michigan. Mysty Eyes 07-12-2003, 02:07 PM I've always been here, thus I cannot make a comparison. Every place has good and bad aspects. Living on the Los Angeles westside: I am spoiled by the year-round temperate weather. I'm a baby when it gets too hot, too cold, too humid, too dry. True, there is less distinction between seasons, but there are seasons. I like it that way. I can visit places that have the extremes... places that are right here in that same state of California. California has most everything: beach, desert, mountains, farmland. It all depends of which part of the state you happen to be in. Basically, things seem to be more laid back where I live. Alternate lifestyles are more openly displayed and accepted. People live in a more casual manner. But, like I said, I see it from the inside out and always have. laceyinthesky 07-12-2003, 02:27 PM Originally posted by Mysty Eyes Living on the Los Angeles westside: I'm going to be moving to that area sometime early next year. Swimfan85 07-12-2003, 08:41 PM what is cali really like? cuz I live on the other side of the country and cali seems really nice, honestly I dont know like the different parts/geography of the state and what places are warm...which are beachy, ect Kitt 07-12-2003, 09:03 PM California is probably the most diverse state in the Union. A melting pot of people from Asian, Mexico, China, Iowa, lol, even the Irish have a special block or two. The weather varies from mountain snow to desert sun, to the inbetween foothills, to the city of Los Angeles. You can't pigeonhole the state of California. Swimfan85 07-12-2003, 09:10 PM where are the beach areas? I love the beach!!! all my life I have been swimming in the alantic ocean! *Marilyn Monroe* 07-12-2003, 10:03 PM Originally posted by Kitt Iowa, lol, even the Irish have a special block or two. Oh man, I feel special. I'm Irish, and I live in Iowa lol spunkygirl 07-12-2003, 11:10 PM I lived there when my dad got transferred there for his job. I hated it because I had no family there but my dad and stepmom. I lived in Sacramento, and the part I lived in, there really wasn't much to do. I hated walking like what seemed like 5 miles to school(it probably wasn't that many) I hate big towns that's probably why. I lived there for 4 years, and not to mention the fact that I went to two different high schools out there. I love it here in Ohio. Ohio rocks! Kitt 07-12-2003, 11:21 PM Originally posted by Swimfan85 where are the beach areas? I love the beach!!! all my life I have been swimming in the alantic ocean! The Atlantic! Brrrr, lol. Isn't that cold most all of the time? The beach areas are all up and down the coast. Of course Huntington, Sunset, Venus, Dana Point, and others in southern Cal are some of the famous beaches. In the north though there is the beautiful Big Sur coast, the Humboldt coast, and the San Francisco Bay area. There are lots more that I didn't mention. There are also great rivers, especially in the north, to swim in. Boy, I'm sold! If I didn't live here I'd move here. ;) Krystal Lake 07-13-2003, 12:45 AM It's HELL. Hell, I tell ya...HELL! It's not all beaches and palm trees. Nothing like you see in the movies. Hell, most movies use the same damn two streets as backdrops. SBTB Geek 07-13-2003, 01:16 PM I lived here all my life, and I love it. Like Krystal said, it's not all perfect either. Yeah, most of California is BEAUTIFUL, but it also has it's bad areas. Places like South Central L.A., Compton, Inglewood, are areas you should try to stay out of. It's not like there is palm trees everywhere, but if you live in an area that no further than five miles away from the coast, there is lots of palm trees... LOL. I don't have nothing to complain about living here. I live in a suburb called, Palos Verdes Estates. It's a "posh" area where homes go around from 500,000 to 3,000,000 dollars. It's also the place where Donald Trump owns a famous home, and golf course. And every house here is no more than 3 blocks away from our own beach. I consider myself very lucky to live here. It's beautiful. ...and what I like about this place too, is that not everybody here were born into wealth. We worked our ass off getting here. ABlairican Pie 07-13-2003, 01:23 PM I have been there a number of times (I was BORN there, too), and I want to move there!!! Hollywood is so fun. It's like people have all these ideas about California, "it's all the same, etc." Not really. It's like Washington, everyone thinks it's all green, but two-thirds of it is practically a desert. SBTB Geek 07-13-2003, 01:24 PM ....oh, and about living here. People from out-of-state believe most of us run on the beach, surf, and zip lemonade all day. It's not paradise here. Like everyone else, we have to work, go to school, and keep on going making sure not to fall behind. Just don't expect us to know how to do crops, or milk cows. We didn't grow up in such an environment. Oh, and when I visited Mexico a few years back, and when I returned, I noticed that many people here in So Cal try hard to make their lives seem perfect in-order not to see/hear people talk about them. People here always try to impress each other, it's like a constant competition. It's always about, who has the house, best cars, and whose kid got into the best university. But other than that... everything is the same as where most of you live. :p I believe the film "American Beauty" captured alot of our lives perfectly on film. #1_Nancy_McKeon 07-13-2003, 06:51 PM Originally posted by SBTB Geek ....oh, and about living here. I lived in California all my life... I lived half way between Los Angeles and San Francisco. The beach was 10 minutes away because I lived in a little town called Atascadero on the Central Coast. Atascadero is small- no doubt about it, but it's growing... It's true though life in California isn't all lying out on beaches like people see in the movies a lot of the time. We moved to Missouri when I was in fifth grade and the first day of School you would have thought I was famous or something I had crowds of people around me all the time etc... They thought everyone from California was somehow related to a celebrity or extremely rich. I did see a large difference in the school system there compared to California... I was in Fifth Grade and they were teaching things that I had been taught in Second and Third Grade... The school there tested me and wanted to move me up to eleventh grade because they thought I was so advanced. That's when my Mom stepped in and moved us all back to California... an eleven year old graduating from High School in a year, yeah. I like California none the less... I know the ins and outs of the living there. Kitt 07-13-2003, 08:41 PM Originally posted by Krystal Lake It's HELL. Hell, I tell ya...HELL! It's not all beaches and palm trees. The California Environmental Protection Agency?;) David 07-13-2003, 10:23 PM I went to California last summer, and let me just say, I had a FUN FUN time. We went to Hollywood and stuff... But I donno, I dont live there. I live In Florida, and California seems funner. Kristina 07-14-2003, 10:16 AM I like it in Sacramento, the weather never gets TOO bad. It doesn't snow or anything like that. And it's NOT like how people display California in movies, I have never been to a beach in my life. I just sit at home on the computer and wish I have a life... haha! There's alot of stuff to do in California, when I'm 18 I plan to move to Los Angeles. It's not like there is palm trees everywhere,. I agree. Most people focus too much on the good parts of California, and never really see that there is a lot of ugly parts to CA just like any other place. Most never see all the poverty, and homelessness going on especially in in Los Angeles. There is rarely a day that goes by that you don't see someone without a home, or someone hung up on drugs. But yeah, just thought i'd point that out. Other than that living in CA is cool.
