He used to play for the Yankees in the 1950s. He managed the Twins in the late 1960s and was fired after punching one of the team's players. He also managed the Texas Rangers and I think he also managed the Detroit Tigers. On one of those teams, he was fired for telling his pitchers to throw at players on this one team that I can't remember. He told them to do so because he didn't like the fact that Gaylord Perry was using a spitball. He managed the Yankees not once, not twice but five times. In the early 1980s, he managed the Oakland A's and led them to the playoffs in 1981. They were a good team except for one thing. They had an infield. They had an outfield. They had a good starting rotation. However, they had no bullpen. The starters for that team had to go the distance and pitch a lot of innings. And all of them developed arm problems which cut their careers short. In 1982 the team unraveled and he was fired. He was never really good with umpires. He was often tossed out of games for arguing. In one case, he flew into a rage and heaved several handfulls of dirt at home plate umpire Terry Cooney as well as kicking some at him. He was also notorious in Minnesota for punching a marshmallow salesman in anger in the late 1970s. He was at odds with George Steinbrenner (owner of the Yankees). When a press conference was held during one of his re-hirings, he got in an argument with Steinbrenner. Martin died on Christmas 1989 when the pickup truck in which he was riding in crashed on the road. Hatton played the title character (who isn't referred to as "The Brute Man" but as The Creeper) who gets revenge on several people whom he holds responsible for his facial disfigurement during his college years. I don't know if you can notice but that is not makeup that he is wearing. You see after he fought in World War I, he developed a disease called Acromegaly. This illness causes bones in the hands, feet, and face to grow and grow substantially larger than normal. (Actor Paul Benedict, who played Bentley on TV's "The Jeffersons" developed this disease but by then there was a cure for it.) Universal Studios noticed Hatton and his disfigured face and signed him to a movie contract. Unfortunately, Universal Pictures took advantage of him and exploited his disease by putting him in monster movies and stuff. Hatton was intensely displeased by this but was under contract and couldn't do anything about it. "The Brute Man" was his last film and he died before it was released. Mr. Hatton is burried about 5 miles from where I live, in Tampa. He was known as a very kind, gentle man.
