View Full Version : The DVD... it isn't looking good....
GoldenFamilyTies 07-08-2003, 12:19 AM It doesn't seem like The Golden Girls will be out on DVD this year... I think that article mis-led everyone into a big frenzy over nothing. TGG is getting too big of ratings on Lifetime to be put out on DVD just yet.
Superbatboy 07-11-2003, 10:37 PM That sucks. I don't think putting the show on DVD will affect ratings though. Friends has 4 seasons of episodes on DVD, plus countless greatest of DVDs and the ratings are still sky high both in syndication and on primetime.
Dianne3 07-15-2003, 01:19 PM I think, and this is just my opinion, that putting GG on DVD's would affect the ratings.
The Friends cast makes those high salaries (can't wait until the series goes of the air, and we don't have to hear about them), and that's why I think they went to DVD's, while the series is still on the air.

Do you not like the Friends show? I watch it sometimes. And I like it.
Dianne3 07-15-2003, 03:46 PM I used to like Friends in seasons 2 and 3, but now I do not like that show. Ross & Rachel, and their on again/off again relationship, turned me of the show.
ConservativeBalla 07-15-2003, 04:56 PM Well, this is good and bad news to me;
1. I didn't even know the DVD was confirmed; cool.
2. It's delayed; D'oh!
peter may 07-18-2003, 01:02 PM I agree, The reason why GG is not on DVD is that it is an old show, still popular, but if it went to DVD Lifetime's ratings would definately be affected.
Georgia's on my Mind 07-18-2003, 03:48 PM I am surprised that the Designing Women DVD already has a release date and yet GG is put on hold...
ConservativeBalla 07-20-2003, 09:42 PM But isn't the Designing Women DVD just a few episodes and not an actual season? On that note, is the GG DVD gonna be a season or just a few episodes?

Yes, the Designing Women DVD is just a crummy "Best Of." I, for one, won't be suckered into buying it. I want season sets. I also think the reason why Designing Women is already coming out to DVD is probably because it might not be doing as well in the ratings as Golden Girls. It's now only shown once a day compared to GG being shown 7 times a day.
ConservativeBalla 07-29-2003, 03:10 PM Yeah, I'd rather have Season sets, too. I'd only buy "Best of...'s" if they're, like 5 bucks.
HIGH ENOUGH 08-01-2003, 04:52 AM GG is now the 39th most wanted DVD!!!
Josh9125 08-19-2003, 10:03 PM im going to be pissed if it doesn't come out this year!

I'm with you there, but be careful about not buying any 'best-of' sets. Most of the time, especially with older series like this one, companies that own them are hesitant about investing in DVD releases of their series for fear that they won't sell. So to be safe, they issue out a 'best-of' series to see if there's interest in the show. If die-hard fans hold out for season sets, then that means sales will be dismally low. The only message the companies are going to get from low sales is that no one is interested in the series. Then months or years later, the die-hards who refused to buy the initial 'best-of' release will break down and eventually buy it when the realization that no new releases are forthcoming.
Most fans who like these shows are not the type to spend mucho bucks on DVDs period. Some don't even own a DVD player. I speak of middle-aged women and men who are not as caught up in pop culture and therefore don't acribe to the trend of the day. It's different with a show like FRIENDS, since that show is still current. There are tons of teenagers who are into that show and, either through their own allowance or through their parents, will invest in DVD sets as well as other merchandise. It's also a show that's mainstream. DESIGNING WOMEN is not. Most of the show's fanbase are women who are much older than the teen crowd. Like it or not that's a reality.
Me, I'm 30 and am male. I have bought the 'best-of' release and would invest in season sets, and I'm sure I'm not the only one on this board who fits that description, but face it, we're the exception, not the rule.
THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW is just as popular and has just as loyal a fanbase, but future releases of the show have been halted because Season 1 didn't sell well. And there was a MARY & RHODA reunion that was broadcast that topped the ratings, but the show's fanbase is not part of the DVD buying crowd. Naturally, I hope the same fate doesn't befall DESIGNING WOMEN, but it might not even get that far if sales are crappy for this release. Think about it...

flagler 09-26-2003, 07:59 AM That's funny because I thought that there was a big college following of The Golden Girls, I also assumed that kids that watched the show when it first aired (and I was one of them) who are now older would also buy a DVD of the show. I am 21 and know plenty of people between my age and 40 who are looking forward to a release and who do own a DVD player.
But I do agree that the Best Of is a test, we should buy in droves and that just may convince them of its selling power as a season set.
As far as Mary is concerned. Season one wasn't the best season of the show and I am willing to bet most people were holding out for later seasons, not realising that poor sales would result in a halt to production of further releases.
Edster2973 09-26-2003, 08:16 AM It could be... maybe we're both right... anyway, I hope MARY TYLER MOORE sees more releases, as does DESIGNING WOMEN and eventually GOLDEN GIRLS. I'd buy them as gifts for those friends of mine who like the shows but wouldn't buy them for themselves... anything to get more... :)

LuvtheGoldenGirls 11-09-2003, 02:46 AM I am so devastated that there is such a delay on the GG DVD. I am 21 and in college and at least half of my friends would buy the DVD set if it came out. I have been waiting for it for so long. I know that if it did come out and I bought it, it wouldn't hurt the ratings at all because it would still be my favorite show and I would still watch it every night after dinner and every morning before class along with the nanny. It is my routine. The DVD coming out wouldn't change anything except for the fact that the company who put it out would be makin alot of cash.
Dianne3 11-12-2003, 02:17 PM Here's an irony. I was reading this thread a couple of days ago, and found Edsters post very interesting, that older people are less reluctant to buy DVD's.
That same evening, I got a call from a woman doing a survey. She wanted to know if I had bought any DVD's in the past couple of weeks(I hadn't), and what my age group was.
supepowered 12-29-2003, 09:37 AM As popular as the show is, I don't understand why it's not available on DVD yet. I have a slew of taped episodes (original airings from NBC, not the butchered version on Lifetime) and I still watch every episode on Lifetime that I can....
stormygirl 02-23-2004, 02:09 PM Releasing it on DVD shouldn't affect the ratings that much, not everyone gets cable or satellite (speaking for herself lol). But then again, if everyone started buying it on DVD, well... we'll just have to wait and see. Did anyone here sign the petition? Let's hope it helps.

Edster2973 02-23-2004, 02:13 PM Other shows are on DVD and their ratings haven't been affected. Look at Friends, Frasier, Cheers, Will & Grace and a bunch of others, and none of their ratings have slipped. Golden Girls should be released on DVD in season sets, period.

It isn't supposed to come out yet. Nothing is set. We're just speculating why it hasn't come out, that's all.
