View Full Version : Burning Down the House, Part 1
losthighway 06-29-2003, 02:24 AM I hadn't seen this episode in years and years. I completely forgot about the great footage of Helen and Joe in Jamaica. I would have been just like Joe if I was in Jamaica with Crystal:happyface
I did remember the confrontation with Joe and Brian and I always found it upsetting. It was well acted by Tim, but it was difficult to watch. It's no fun seeing Joe mad at Brian.
Krista2882 06-29-2003, 09:17 AM yeah, it was a good episode.
(Every time I look at the title of this post, I start singing that song from the 80's. I forgot who it's by... "3 hundred sixty five degrees, burnin down the house!" who was that? The Talking Heads??)
Helen was so funny when she was freaking out about the house being burned down. "The house burned down! it must have been a fire..." haha!
and yeah, I agree with you- the part when Joe said to Brian, "I want you out of my life.", That was so sad, I almost cried!
I couldn't imagine my brother ever being that mad at me that he would seriously say that. Me and my brother are best friends too, and I would be devastated if he ever got that mad at me that he would say that.

losthighway 06-29-2003, 03:08 PM Yeah, The Talking Heads, I remember that song....."Watch out you might get what you're after, Cool babies strange but not a stranger, I'm an ordinary guy Burning down the house".....haha, what a song!
Krista2882 06-29-2003, 03:18 PM o wow. I never knew any of the other words to that song. hehe. I could never figure them out, and I never looked them up.
That sure is a strange song!
I like the talking Heads. They're weird. I love the video for "Once In A Lifetime". haha that's great.
actually, I think those are the only 2 songs I know by them. I know my Dad is a fan of theirs.. I'll have to see if he has any of their CD's...
For some reason I have "I Ran" by Flock Of Seagulls stuck in my head right now.... hmm...
~Krista
:p
losthighway 06-29-2003, 03:29 PM :D I have to confess that those are the only two Talking Heads songs I really know as well......I do love that song Once in a Lifetime...."you may ask yourself, well how did I get here?"....haha, I do that all the time!
Flock of Seagulls??...wow you are an 80's music machine! See if you can drum up "867-5309 jenny" too! Ahhh, I'm going way back in the time machine now....hehheh.

That's funny, I hadn't seen the episode in years either, and the scene in Jamaica was the scene that I actually remember the most from that episode (this is one of the few episodes that I actually remember from way back when it was on NBC, for some reason; though every now and then when I see an episode, a light bulb will go off, and I think, "hey, I kind of remember this one!"). That scene was funny--I love that seductive look that they keep giving each other, it's a crack up. That scene was really sad with Brian and Joe. I have to say, I found Casey and Brian to be kind of annoying last night in their scenes together. I didn't think I'd mind them as a couple, because they always were funny together when they were friends, but for some reason they kind of got on my nerves last night. Also, I felt sooo bad for Antonio! It seems like they're kind of making Antonio into somewhat of a pathetic figure that you're supposed to feel sorry for.

Oh, I AM an 80's music machine!!
haha! Tommy Tutone! that song is annoying tho. I've always wanted to call that phone number: 867-5309 just to find out who it belongs to, but nowadays, too many people have caller ID, and they'd know whose ass to kick. :D
you know what one of my favorite 80's songs is right now? "Save A Prayer" by Duran Duran. I love the key that song is in. It's in some weird minor key, and there are some really cool harmonies in that song.
HaskellGirl 06-29-2003, 04:46 PM This two-part episode is one of my absolute favorites in the entire series, because of the Joe and Brian interaction. Definately dramatic and heart-breaking.
But I totally agree that Brian and Casey were somewhat annoying together in these eps.

That seen is very dramatic and upsetting, but I've watched it over and over and over again. It breaks my heart, but I love it at the same time. I don't know why.

I know what you mean! Sometimes on TV shows, there's a scene that's soo sad, but it was so beautifully done that I want to watch it again.
I think for me, it's really rare that a TV show really makes me feel something. like most of the time, I'll see a sad scene on a TV show and be like, "oh, that's sad." but it doesn't really affect me all that much. and then once in a while, there's a scene from a TV show that really makes me feel something- whether it's happy, sad, or whatever else, and it's just like, "wow..." because it was acted so well, or written so well, or directed so well, and/or all of the above, that it made you really feel some kind of emotion. so you just want to watch it a whole bunch of times.
pilotguy 06-29-2003, 07:01 PM That Joe-Brian scene hit ME like a ton of bricks....because I knew EXACTLY how Joe felt at that moment!
Not to unload on you guys, but my father (who passed away a couple of years ago) could be very manipulative and verbally abusive throughout most of my life.
When I was single and he did that stuff to me, I could take it....I might argue back, but I basically took it again and again...
However, after I was married and Dad started doing that stuff to my wife and kids, I thought to myself, "OK, that's ENOUGH!"
I didn't estrange myself from him , but I stood up to him in a very calm manner (just like Joe did). I didn't raise my voice, but I said to him (very factually), "It's not just ME any more, and this will NOT continue!". while Dad looked at me with this "You're kidding, right?" expression on his face, just like Brian did.
Dad's verbal games DID stop after that, but our relationship was never the same. Instead of ME being on pins and needles when I was around him, suddenly HE was the one who was walking on eggs and being on his best behavior around my wife and children....and me. This "new" relationship had an awkward, strained feeling about it, but I couldn't allow that previous behavior to continue.
It's amazing how much garbage you can take from someone when you're single and it's just YOU...and how LITTLE of that stuff you will stand for when you're married with a family of your own, and it affects THEM!
As I watched that scene between Joe and Brian, I thought of Dad....I didn't actually CRY, but I had one hell of a big lump in my throat!

hee hee! The 80s! That was my decade.
Anyhoo, losthighway -- didn't you love "And She Was" ? That was always my favorite Talking Heads song.... oh, and "Take me to the river, drop me in the water..."
Love,
Wing<><
losthighway 06-29-2003, 10:26 PM Hey Wingshock, you are bringing back memories! I do remember those songs now! I guess I knew more Talking Heads stuff then I realizied.
And Krista, I'm mighty impressed with your 80's music knowledge! Wear that badge of "80's music machine" with pride.
spunkygirl 06-29-2003, 11:24 PM Part I and II are my other two fav. episodes of Wings. It was very well acted by Tim, Crystal and Steven. Helen had me rolling and the things she was saying. ROFL. Joe was right though He is always cleaning up Brian's messes, and it was fine when it was just Joe but now he has Helen to consider. Brian needs to grow up a little and think of other's once in awhile. I was in tears though when Joe was saying all that to Brian, it was very compelling

hehe. yes, I'm proud of my 80's music knowlege! I was born in 1982, and my parents were always listening to music, and watching music videos, so I just love all that 80's music. It reminds me of when I was little.
I like to make mix CD's of random 80's songs. I listen to them all the time. :D
Krista2882 06-30-2003, 08:51 AM Hey, I saw part 2 last night.
Thank goodness for Direct TV. our cable got knocked out yesterday morning in a thunderstorm, and it's still not even back this morning. But I got to watch Wings on Direct TV. I didn't get to tape it, but at least I got to see it!
It was a really good episode!!
Helen was HILARIOUS when she sprayed that guy with the fire extinguisher! "There is no smoking AT THE LUNCH COUNTER!!!"
and Antonio was so funny. I loved the way he was laughing to himself at the beginning when Roy walked in. And how he was sending things to peoples' houses... but paying for them himself. haha!
and then "Brian, you have a phone call... NO YOU DON'T!! HAHA!!" lol
I really liked the scene at the end. I thought it was going to be real cheesy when Joe first saw his dead father sitting there, but it was actually done really well.
I like how Joe was saying that HE was the one who raised Brian when they were kids- who made dinner and made sure he got to school on time, and that when Brian would have nightmares, he went to Joe- not their father. That just shows the brothers' bond even more. I was like, "No Joe! you can't let Brian leave!!" lol. It was a good scene. Then when Brian came in at the end, Joe says to him, "Brian... don't leave."
awwww! *sniff*
lol

phoebe7165 06-30-2003, 11:43 AM Krista, you & I are on the same wavelength with 80's music. 'Save a Prayer' is my absolute favorite song from D2 and when we saw them in concert a few years back, they sang that. My boyfriend calls me pop culture goddess, because he doesn't know everything I know, so he knows all he has to do is ask. But 80's music is certainly what he knows well. That is one of the many things we have in common. One of our songs is I'll Stop the World & Melt With You. We also play a little game called Guess Who Died-which if anybody's already heard but the great Katherine Hepburn died yesterday. One of my favorite movies is Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, especially Spencer Tracy's speech at the end and you see Katherine in the background and she has tears in her eyes.
OKAY!!Now I have to talk about Wings. I haven't had the chance to watch Part 2 because I went to a concert last night and didn't get home until 3:15, but I did see it before when it first aired. Very sad ending on Parts 1 & 2.:( :crying: :( :crying:
Krista2882 06-30-2003, 11:46 AM cool. what concert did you go to, phoebe?
phoebe7165 06-30-2003, 12:38 PM Well, they are 3 bands that all have a huge following but they are almost never played on the radio. So the 3 bands that played were Fates Warning, Dream Theater, & Queensryche. I wasn't too familiar with Fates Warning's music so I missed them on purpose, then went inside between FW & DT's set. My brother got me listening to DT about 10 yrs ago. I always had a thing for lead singers with very strong voices and James LaBrie, DT's singer has such an incredible voice. I've also been listening to QR for a while, too. Most people know them from the song 'Silent Lucidity' but they have so many other great songs. In fact, when they performed S.L. last night, I didn't even sing along, I just sat there. It's not that I don't like the song, it's just that the radio stations played the crap out of it. OK, I know I've said enough but you asked, Krista. Enough of my ranting!  The reason I got home so late is because I waited around after the show. Since I'm usually not one of the fortunate ones to get a backstage pass, I just wait with the rest of them for the bands to come out. So I met 4/5 of DT, and 1/5 of QR.
Oh well, I'm sorry about this. None of this has anything to do with Wings. I used to go on the Stars On Ice message boards because I also like figure skating and they have 4 skating forums-Competitions, Shows, General Skating, and Other, to which you can talk about anything on Other. So I don't see why once in a while, we can go off-topic.offtopic:
Krista2882 06-30-2003, 12:46 PM AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!! You saw Dream Theater???!!!! I LOVE THEM!!!!! Me, my Dad, and my brother tried to go see them when they were in CT a few months ago, but we weren't able to go. That's really cool that you got to meet some of the band too!
I've heard of Queensryche, but I haven't heard any of their music.
Hey, I don't think anyone here really minds if there's off-topic conversation here.. I definately don't. I always say that there's only SO much on-topic stuff to talk about. If you couldn't talk about anything else, the boards would get a little boring.

I thought Tim's acting was excellent in this episode, especially in the scene with his father, and then at the very end when he tells Brian not to leave. I also loved how Helen kept wearing Casey's designer clothes to clean the kitchen and fill up the ketchup bottles! Oh, and about the 80's music, "Save a Prayer" is a great song. I know pretty much all the DD songs, because my sister used to listen to them non-stop...she was pretty obsessed with Duran Duran. I just love how these threads sometimes go off on tangents!
phoebe7165 07-01-2003, 12:59 AM I agree with you, Kris10m, about Tim's acting. I watched the 2nd part today and had tears in my eye(even though I had seen this ep before)when he was talking to his dad and then when he told Brian Don't Go. I don't know why I get that way. I guess it's so realistic. Wow, Joe sure has issues with his parents!
Krista!!!Wow, a fellow DT fan! I know there are so many out there that I've yet to hear of. I tell ya, I saw quite a few people wearing DT shirts and when DT was on stage, the place was packed even though DT was the supporting band. I really believe it was more of a 60/40 thing-DT to QR. All I know is all the people around were all into DT, too.:woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :guitar:
Mcfly 07-02-2003, 03:55 PM Good to see these young people acknowledging 80s music :)! Though it's tough to hear the old "My dad likes them" line. I'm only 27 but grew up on that stuff.
I saw that ep so many times that I actually use Joe's dialogue sometimes! Both with my step dad and a longtime girlfriend, both could run their mouths. One day, like Joe, I just SNAPPED and rattled off "Shut up! You know, all our lives it's been the same pattern: you piss me off, I get mad, you apologize, I forgive you but then I'm the one stuck cleaning up the mess! I just don't have it in me anymore". And did their faces turn to stone, LOLOL!
