View Full Version : How Good was "Sanford"??
jeffreyb 06-24-2003, 09:51 PM I absolutely love "SANFORD AND SON" again after not seeing
this show for so many years since I was a kid. But I never
saw the "spin-off"(sequel?) "SANFORD".
For anyone who saw "SANFORD", honestly just how good was
it? (I've read all the plot summaries). Did it have any of the
great writing as the original?? Be curious to get everyone's
'report card" on this show I'm curious about.
(also did they use the same theme music?)
thanks!!
Tuesday Weld 06-24-2003, 09:56 PM I didn't think "Sanford" was that good at all,not nearly as good as "Sanford and son".It really lacked something.

I thought "Sanford" was somewhat depressing. Lamont is gone, Fred and Donna are no longer together, Fred has a REAL heart attack, Woodrow is dead...Real funny stuff. NOT!

Sanford was FUNNIER. Only because the overweight Guy was much entertaining than stupid Lamont. The Dummy Jokes can get stale but Fat jokes can be more funny.

You are forgetting about Cal. You have to realized that it was a new era of Sanford and Son. Fred had a prettier girlfriend, a new and funny business partner, and Lamont was not missed by me.
jekouptown 06-25-2003, 10:21 AM cal had zero talent. Who wants to see lamont replaced by a fat white guy who had to act dummer than grady.? Didn't he get stuck there by loosing his money or something...didn't he wear suspenders and boots all the time.? That story line pure junk. Redd Foxx is the only reason people watched it for as long as they did. If you are a Redd Foxx fan do enjoy it for he is the star. If you remember Sanford and Son like I did you won't even have it on tape !
People complain about lamonts lack of talent and acting skills. Didn't he dance and play drums on the show.? Let me see cal make a two step..or even attempt to do anything that shows talent. Lamont made facial expressions that made you laugh. Thats talent.

YOU WOULD THINK THAT WAY. THIS SITE IS SANFORD AND SON..NOT SANFORD. SON..NOT A REJECT FROM HEEHAW. he could only play the part of a fat guy..
Sanford (1980) - Cal Pettie
Hanging In (1979) - Sam Dickey
Forever Fernwood (1977) - Mac Slattery
Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman (1976) - Mac Slattery 1976
The Texas Wheelers (1974) - Bud
name one of these shows that was a hit.?
well ...its the biography for your better than lamont friend.

Well Demond Wilson starred in Baby I'm Back in 1978 and the show was canceled after the first season. So it showed he contributed NOTHING to Sanford and Son. IT WAS ALL REDD FOXX.

I haven't seen Sanford so I can't comment on any of this, but Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman was a syndicated hit in 1976. It left the air in 1977 because Louise Lasser, who played Mary Hartman, left the show. So he was in one hit, I suppose.
I personally don't think just because you have no hits doesn't mean you are a bad actor...some good actors and actresses have never been in a hit show. Even Redd Foxx had show that bombed. *Shrug* I can't really comment on the Demond Wilson or the guy who played Cal on Sanford/

Obviously a lot of people thought he contributed more than Cal did, because Sanford didn't last very long. It took Lamont for the show to be successful.

Sanford not lasting long had nothing to do with Lamont not being there because in the last season of Sanford and Son, the show was not in the top 30

Going way, way off topic here, but since you brought up a short lived show Demond starred in. What about 'The New Odd Couple'. Can't remember if Demond was playing the Felix like character or if he was like the Oscar character. Ron Glass (?) was in it, too. TNOC was short lived too, right? Don't ask me where I saw the show at, but I remember seeing an ep of the series. It's been years and years ago though. All I can remember is the guys won a car or got a car and Ron Glass' character didn't want to drive the car at all, but Demond's character wanted to drive it. I think they had to get up early in the morning (every morning) to move the car off the street. I think at the end of the ep, they sold the car. I'm prob. describing the ep all wrong. Unfortunately, I can't find an ep guide for the show.
I know I went way off topic, but I'd like to state that I think Sanford and Son was it. It was the tops, I doubt many remember any of the shows Redd or Demond did after Sanford and Son ended. Only a select few will remember the shows, but I doubt many people just remember Sanford and Son and nothing else. jmo
magellan333 06-26-2003, 08:56 PM I never knew Lamont was so loathed. I liked his character. He was a good straight man to Red Foxx. To answer the question, Sanford had some chuckles, but it was nowhere near the laughfest that was Sanford AND SON.

Sanford would have as many laughs as Sanford and Son if it was on the air for 5 years like S&S

In the first four or five seasons, it WAS in the top 30, top 10 even.

I said the last season. The last season is the closet to when Sanford was first aired. So viewers were no longer interested in Fred the Junkman and his Dumb Son.

Being the reasonably intelligent person that I am, I did notice that you said the last season. But the reason people weren't interested in the show wasn't Lamont. The show ran its course and people got tired of it. By the last season Fred, Lamont, Aunt Esther, Grady...none of them were funny.

so you think by removing lamont and adding cal that made the show a big hit.?

i suppose not. if the star left the show and it flopped then what does that tell you about CAL.? Even when lamont left the show still maintainted a certain level of success.

Yes I do. The show was funnier because Fred had more to say about Cal than he did about Lamont
Tyler77 06-27-2003, 09:43 PM I think that "Sanford" used it's characters to replace the old cast from "Sanford and Son", that for whatever reason, were no longer available: Fred's new girlfriend was a Donna replacement, although she was a wealthy woman, her maid had Esther overtones, and Fred used the old schtick that he used to use on Esther when he had a run-in with her, and Cal, well, I don't think he replaced Lamont, I guess it was to bring the show in a new direction.

You've got that a little backwards: Sanford would have been on the air for five years if it would have had as many laughs as Sanford and Son.

I don't know if you seen Sanford but if you did, was Fred more funnier since he was in the presence of someone like Cal? The only thing Fred can say about Lamont was Dummmy. It was so much he could say about Cal. Fat jokes can go a long way-LOL

You have a bizarre way of evaluating what makes a TV show good.

CAL had no chemistry in that sitcom.
maybe you didn't like lamont but he added a felix to oscar type relationship..felix and oscar from the odd couple incase you didn't get it.

You mean to tell me you didn't laugh at any of Fred's fat jokes about Cal?

I feel like you do about the dummy jokes. After three or four times it was obvious thats the only reason he was there(cal)

But see i never knew why Fred called Lamont becuse he didn't come off as a dummy to me. Maybe a little boring but not a dummy. But in Cal's case, you could see he was fat and that's what made the dat jokes funny.

lamont was the co-star....cal was just there by his own mistakes...maybe your right..cal was the dummy.
Junkoligist 07-21-2003, 01:52 PM In my opinion Lamont added allot to the show (early seasons (with afro). It wasn't until the later seasons where he got boring. The ones where every time someone comes into the house the audience claps. I didn't care for the Lamont character then only because he really didn't do anything.
Why did Lamont leave the cast???
