Though she was still eating regularly, Jo's breathing became increasingly laborsome. In the past few days she started to limp and hobble as she'd walk...make it 5 or 6 paces, then drop on her side to pant. Enough was enough for this poor little cat and so we made the painful decision to take her back to the vet's office for the last time. I have felt so tortured with this decision in the past weeks not knowing if it was the right thing to do. Today, I had no chioce but to face that it was. However, in her last display of friendship, Jo died quietly in my arms before we even reached the parking lot generously relieving us of that decision altogether. We sat in the car for about a half hour talking to her, stroking her nose, saying our goodbyes and laughing through tears about how she stayed true to her defiant, bossy character right till the end. "Nobody's gonna put me to sleep...that's it, I'm outta here!"

To everyone who has shared their concern and support, I thank you for your beautiful spirit of kindness and sympathy. I lost a friend today, but made a few new ones on the way. It's amazing how a little creature who always asked for so little gave so very much. I love her.

I know exactly how you feel. My dog died Thursday, when I wasn't even in the state. She had bad diabetes and she was staying at the vet's for the weekend. My parents promised not to put her to sleep or give her away while I was gone, but when she came home Monday she kept throwing up and couldn't breathe...Thursday she went into a coma and died. This has never happened to me before and I so know how you feel....it's ******. I'm sorry...

I lost a cat a year ago. It hurts to loose a pet. My cat kept on throwing up foam. The doctor over dosed her on pills. The pills got cought in her throat and she suffacated to death. We paid over $2,000 dollars to try keep her alive. We did get to say good bye to her.

I'm sorry to hear that she has passed on, She is in a better place now, where she will feel no more pain. I know what it feels like. (I went through the same thing with Dizzy.) I'll keep you in my prayers.

:bighug:

I'm sure Jo loved you very much and she probably couldn't have asked for a better mother.

I'm very sorry to hear that. It's a very hard thing to have to endure. I'm going through the same thing with my dog. Thursday we find out what we're going to do with her. We've had her since she was a puppy, and she's only six. But she's had a lot of health problems in recent months and seems utterly miserable. Add on top of that the fact that she's just gone blind, and you have a pretty big hodge-podge of difficulties for her.

Losing a pet is never easy, but if she's suffering with no hope of getting better, I'd much rather put her down and take her out of her misery. Even so, I'm overcome with an overwhelming feeling of sadness for what might happen.

I'm very sorry, Zoey. It sounds like a heartbreaking experience, but I am very confident that your baby had a good life, since you sound like a good "mother" to her. I am also very sorry for the losses of TradingMooses and the others who lost pets recently.

All I wanted to do was lay in my bed lastnight. I flipped through a magazine trying to keep my mind occupied. I finally fell asleep at around 10:00, I think. But I kept tossing and turning till I woke up at 2:30a.m. feeling panicky and nauseous. After 13 years, I just can't believe she won't be here anymore. I guess that will take some time to get used to.

I really appreciate your warm comments and taking the time to share your stories with me. I am sad for your loss as well and at the same time I feel happy to see so many animals had the loving homes they deserved.

It has been wonderful to be able to turn to you all. Thank you more than words can say.

What a depressing thread. I'm sure we've all had to overcome the passing of a pet sometime in our lives, my 4 year old cat died on October 11th, 2001, of some-kind of stomach flu. the vet had her on a heating pad, and during the middle of the night, with her last bit of strength, jumped off of the heating pad and slowly succumb to her illness.

I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your pet. My heart goes out to everyone who has lost something (or even someone) that they truly loved.

I know what it feels like. I have lost 3 pets in the last 8 years, myself.

It helps to know that they are going to a better place and that they will be forever missed.

I know how it is to lose an animal. So far, that upset me more when I lost my dog a few years back than losing relatives.:( You and Jo will be in my prayers. Good luck with everything!

:( I'm terribly sorry for your losses. After reading all of these stories my eyes are welling up. I too have a dog, and devote alot of my time to her, constantly checking at night if she has been brought inside, or if she's gone a while looking for her, on holidays I worry too. One great thing is I know all your animals had very loving homes, animals are great, friendly and loyal, and very comforting- cos they won't critiscise. If I lost my dog I'd be devestated for days and days- you're very brave to be coming back and posting on these boards. Some of you were unfortunate enough not to say goodbye to animals- at least you were lucky that way. are you ever going to get another pet? There are thousands out there without homes- I wish I could just buy them all. Good Luck to you then  :candle: :candle: :candle:

I'm so, so sorry. I too know what it's like. My family has four cats (we used to have five) my special boy, Rumpole, just passed away last month. He was a black persian with big yellow eyes. He would just follow me around the house - we called him the black shadow. Such a sweet boy. He was getting pretty old and the vet predicted that he wouldn't be able to survive the move (when my parents moved to Pennsylvania) but about a week before they were going to go, he died. I did at least get to say goodbye to him. I was in the States in March and I rather suspected that he wouldn't be there by the time I came back. Now my new house just won't be the same. :(

Cats should live to be 203 years old, because it just isn't fair.
