I don't think anything can beat Mike Love's speech during The Beach Boys' Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame induction in 1988.

"And I think it's wonderful to be here tonight, but I also think it's sad that there are other people who aren't here tonight. And, uh, those are the people who have passed away, those are the obvious ones. But the other not-so-obvious ones are people like Paul McCartney, who couldn't be here tonight because he's in a lawsuit with Ringo and Yoko. That's what he sent a telegram to some, uh, high priced attorney in this room, you know. And that's a bummer, because we're talking about harmony, right, and the world. If we can't get it together in America and in England, and harmony within our groups. I mean, beleive it, you can beleive it the Beach Boys have their own interstescene(?) or whatever you call it, squabbles. But that's a bummer when Ms. Ross can't make it, you know? The Beach Boys have continued to do, about, we did about 180 performances last year. I'd like to see the Mop-Tops match that! I'd like to see Mick Jagger get out on this stage and do I Get Around versus Jumpin' Jack Flash, any day now. And I'd like to see some people kick out the jams, and I challenge the Boss to get up on stage and jam. I wanna see Billy Joel, see if he can still tickle ivories, lemmee see. I know Mick Jagger won't be here tonight, he's gonna have to stay in England. But I'd like to see us in the Coliseum and he at Wembley Stadium because he's always been chicken**** to get on stage with the Beach Boys."

Later that year, Mike again embarassed the band by making them record "Kokomo."

Yeah, that was career suicide, although she didn't burn it; she ripped it. It was on an episode of Saturday Night Live in 1992. I wasn't watching that episode, but I watched the next week's SNL with Joe Pesci as the host. During his monologue, Pesci went off on her, saying that if he was there, he would have picked her up by the... eyebrows and shake some sense into her.

Hmmm, I think there're many- maybe the Michael Jackson kid scandal. Vanilla Ice's movie debut? Or when Chuck Berry was busted for installing a camera in his restaurant's ladies room. Maybe this recent R. Kelly sex tape thing? Jerry Lee Lewis & his 13 year old cousin?

"Glitter"? :)

This list could be real long...

You're right, Rickenbacker. Here are a few more that come to mind:

2002 - Pete Townshend does a little online "research."

1987-present - An adult R. Kelly does a little offline "research."

1985 - Fantasy Records sues John Fogerty for plagiarizing himself ("Run Through The Jungle"/"The Old Man Down The Road").

1989 - 53-year-old Bill Wyman leaves The Rolling Stones to marry his 18-year-old girlfriend... who he'd been dating for five years.

1980 - Paul McCartney brings something green with him to Japan. The authorities see it in his luggage. Paul is jailed for nine days.

1997 - Fiona Apple gives the most bizarre and arrogant acceptance speech in history ("This world is bull****!").

1996 - Van Halen, newly reunited with David Lee Roth, presents an award to Beck Hansen at the MTV Video Music Awards. During the acceptance speech, Roth averts attention away from Beck by "playing to the crowd" in the background - flailing his arms, "dancing;" etc. This was incredibly embarassing for Eddie Van Halen. Roth is kicked once again out of the band the next day.

1998 - Van Halen releases "Van Halen III." Gary Cherone. Enough said.

1964-present - Courtney Love exists.

I'll think of more later.

I forgot to mention - Bob Dylan was also inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame that night. Here's an excerpt from his acceptance speech:

"I want to thank Mike Love... for not mentioning me."

I love that man!

Oh God- speaking of Courtney- how about the time about 10 years ago, during some MTV awards show, Krist Novoselic tossed his bass in the air & it came right down on his head! It was right in the middle of a song Nirvana were performing. He collapsed & they kept playing. He tried to get up once or twice & fell again. He was totally knocked senseless. That musta been embarrassing.

Yeah. He was drunk at the time, too. He left the stage toward the end of the song, and Kurt didn't know what was going on, so his reaction was to kick Krist in the ass!

-shes been caught in so many lies
-her battery pack pulls her pants down while shes performing and shows her ass crack and theres pictures of it on a bunch of anti avril sites
-every1 knows shes fake
-there's so many ppl that sell anti avril merchandise
-theres a bunch of anti avril websites and clubs
-theres a petition for her NOT to be nominated for a grammy with over 5000 signatures

thats all i can think of. i would prolly shoot myself if i was in that situation.

Here's a part of one of the defining moments of rock & roll courtesy of Rolling Stone's "The Decades of Rock & Roll":

The Nineties --By Rob Sheffield

Once in a blue moon, a record comes along to define a decade--no, a generation. A record that wraps yellow tape around everything that came before and stakes a claim on everything to follow. A record that maps out a new canon of rock & roll mythology. Such a record came out in late 1990, introducing the bold, new voice that would dominate the era. The group that made the record exploded out of nowhere to change the face of music, and its all-too-brief career raised the hopes of everyone who'd given up on the future of rock, daring us to dream all over again. No doubt about it: We can all remember the first time we heard C+C Music Factory's "Here We Go, Let's Rock & Roll."

You remember C+C Music Factory's "Here We Go, Let's Rock & Roll," don't you? Come on, it was a Number Three hit--you know, that group that did the "Everybody dance now" song, with Zelma Davis, the model who "visualized" the vocals? Well, maybe you
don't remember, but C+C sealed their place in rock history one fateful afternoon in the summer of 1991, when rapper Freedom Williams passed out onstage (from "exhaustion," of course) in the middle of a stadium show, and his voice kept booming out of the speakers while he lay there unconscious. Thanks to the miracle of lip syncing, the show went on--they could have pumped the poor guy's stomach without missing a beat--but the Eighties died right then and there, and so did the whole music factory that made 1990 the worst year for recorded music since the invention of magnetic tape. Pop artifice is a wonderful thing, but incompetent pop artifice is something else, and with C+C, the industry had finally reached the point where it couldn't even churn out quality garbage. Even those of us who were card-carrying Bananarama and Pet Shop Boys fans had to scoff at what was left of the Eighties machine and sneer, "Here we go. Let's rock & roll." Or to put it another way: "Here we are now! Entertain us!"

I've made it pretty clear on this board I don't like Avril Lavigne, but she does have more musical credibility than Kelly Osbourne.

And you know what was really weird about it was when they had a PRESS CONFERENCE on CNN about the lip sync revelations, CNN had to CUT in for a minute or two with MINOR breaking news of John Major becoming the new Prime Minister of Britain (which was treated like an aside footnote)... and then back to the biggest musical scandal on the planet.... Shows what priorities CNN had back then.

Some of the most embarassing moments:

1974: Keith Moon collapses onstage in San Francisco after taking too much drugs. A kid from the audiencce helps the Who finish their set.

1978: The Sgt. Pepper movie, starring the Bee Gees and Peter Frampton.

1979: The racist, out-of-control disco record-burning fracas at Chicago's Comiskey Park.

1980: Alice Cooper's appearance on the Japanese duo Pink Lady's NBC variety show! (You don't want to know!)

1983: The second (and, thankfully, last) Us Festival.

1985: Phil Collins performs two songs at London's Live Aid concert, flies to Philadelphia (where everyone at the Philly concert saw his London performance on the Jumbotron) and performs. . .the same two songs at the Philadelphia concert.

1988 to 1992 - most of Axl Rose's live appearances! :p

Another one: At the Grammy Awards one year (I think it was 1974), host Andy Williams was talking to Stevie Wonder, who was out of the country and joined the ceremonies via satellite. The audio went out, and Wonder couldn't hear anything. Williams said, "Stevie, if you can't hear me, can you see me?"
