These were characters who lost somethng once they had their own show.

George Jefferson-Extremely Funny on All in the Family but Less funny on the Jeffersons.

Mork was a Huge hit on Happy Days and not funny at all on Mork and Mindy

Stanley Roper very funny on Three's Company and BORING on his show "The Ropers.

These three characters obviously needed Archie Bunker, Fonzie, and Jack Tripper to generate laughs which is why they were less funny on their own show. Anyone Agree

What Does Florida Evans have to do anything? If you are saying that she was Funny on Maude and Good Times, I'm only discussing spinoffs. Good Times was not a spinoff.

I completely disagree. George Jeffersons got funnier on The Jeffersons when he left the tiring All In The Family show. Plus, it's quite clear the George didn't need Archie one bit because look how long the show lasted. TJ outlived AITF.

Mork was just as funny on his show as on Happy Days.

I said George became LESS funny, Yes he still was funny on the Jeffersons but on AITF, He was WILD!!. On the Jeffersons, George became soft ans less mean as the years went on. Especially the 80's. Just look at a AITF episode with George from 73-75 and Look at a Jeffersons episode from 1980 and you will see the Difference.

Lisa Bonet was funny on The Cosby Show, but horribly boring on A Different World.

And I thought Good Times WAS a spin off.

No, Good Times was not a spinoff, it was explained by the executive Producer of Good Times in 1975 that the Florida Evans character was changed Completely from the Florida Evans character on Maude.

When people reply to you, it will a pain to write...well Sitcom Analyzer, I agree with that because....
Why not post a poll on Chit Chat. My guess is most will agree.

Cheers, Family Ties, The Cosby Show, Night Court and Seinfeld. I would catch AITF and The Jeffersons occasionally too.

When the Jeffersons started their own show, did you expect Edith and Archie to guest star on the Jeffersons?

To preface my answer about characters there is some clarity about Florida Evans. Good Times, the character that Florida played, was a spinoff from Maude. Maude was a spinoff from All In the Family. To understand the whole Florida Evans thing one needs to look at the Maude episode when Florida leaves the Findlay's. That was Esther Rolle's final episode on Maude. The unfortunate thing about Good Times that it was orignally Esther Rolle's vehicle. It turned into an half hour of Jimmie Walker's stand up comedy routine. It got old and tiring. I enjoyed the authenicity and genuineness of James and Florida's relationship. Too bad more storylines could had dealt with them as a married couple. Florida was much funnier and sharper tongue on Maude than on Good Times.

Here is what TV Tome has to say about the whole Florida Evans thing that came from the episode guide of Maude:
42. Florida's Goodbye
gs: John Amos (Henry Evans) Conchata Farrell (Rita Valdez) Jeane Byron (Housekeeper Applicant)

After Henry, Florida's husband, gets a job promotion, she must tell Maude she's leaving to become a full-time housewife. As applicants for the new job come in, Maude finds something wrong with each one. Finally, at the end of the day, Maude must say goodbye to Florida.

b: 05-Feb-1974 pc: 216 w: John Rappaport d: Hal Cooper

NOTE: This is Esther Rolle's last episode, she took her character to the Maude spin-off "Good Times" which debuted three days later on February 8, 1974

Other characters that was funnier on the Parent Show and less funny on their own spinoff:
The champion of all: Rhoda Morgenstern - Rhoda. She was far more funnier on The Mary Tyler Moore Show than on her show as Rhoda. Valerie Harper and David Groh had the worst TV chemistry than any married TV couple on the air. Marrying off Rhoda immediately was a huge mistake. That would had made a good series finale. Marrying Rhoda, separating her and Joe and the divorce turned the show into a soap opera. Valerie Harper had better chemistry with Josh Taylor on the Hogan Family than with David Groh.

Edna Garrett - Far funnier on Diffrernt Strokes than on the Facts of Life.

Florence Johnston - When she had her own show. It was pathetic. She needed George Jefferson. That was when she was at her best.

Well the facts were given. Look at Rhoda Morgenstern she moved from Minneapolis to New York. Anyhow that was my insight and thoughts on the Florida Evans character. I think if you watch the E True Hollywood Story that whole discussion will shed some light.

Anyhow another character I thought was horrible on her own show but hilarious on the parent show was Florence Jean Casterberry. She LOL funny on Alice. She was the show and that what pissed Linda Lavin off. Alice was never the same after Flo left.

Well was it explained on MAry Tyler Moore or the first episode of Rhoda, why the Rhoda character moved from Minneapolis to NYC?

I would say I liked Rhoda Morgenstern a lot more on the MTM show than I ever did on Rhoda...The MTM show lost a lot when she left, and "Rhoda" was never that good of a show to begin with...

Ditto with Phyllis...I liked her as Mary's landlady on MTM, but the show "Phyllis" really sucked...

So there's two right there that were better on the original show...

Joanie and Chachi were stupid characters on Happy Days (which was only decent for a year or two before it jumped the shark), and were no doubt worse in "Joanie Loves Chachi"...

I never liked "Alice" or any of the people on that show...I never thought Flo was funny...

Good Times was definitely spun off from Maude...I don't remember Maude well enough to know how good Florida was on that show, but she must have received a favorable reaction to get a show of her own... Of course, on Good Times, she was a serious character who ended up playing second-fiddle to J.J.

In fact, speaking of "J.J." and "Flo", here's the ultimate question...if you HAD to spend eternity listening non-stop either to Jimmy Walker saying "Dy-no-mite!" or Flo saying "Kiss Mah Grits", which would YOU choose?

something to think about, eh?

Oh, right on! George, I thought, was extremely funny on The Jeffersons. His arguments with his wife and the Wilses were hilariously outrageous! I had the most fun watching him on his own show [Jeffersons] than All in the Family.
