View Full Version : Bewitched or I Dream of Jeannie?
Growing up I used to love I Dream of Jeannie but never really got into Bewitched--it's been at least ten years since i've seen IDJ. Surprisingly i've been enjoying Bewitched more than IDJ. Who's more attractive Samantha or Jeannie and which is the better character?
I've read somewhere (Complete Directory of Prime Time Television?) that ABC was going to either renew The Paul Lynde Show or Bewitched--one or another but not both. Since Bewitched was on for years, the producers chose to renew the Paul Lynde Show. But yesterday at epguides.com I read that the show was renewed for three more years but Elizabeth Montgomery declined.
I forgot to answer my both question--Samantha is much hotter than Jeannie.
dawsongirl 06-06-2003, 04:00 PM Jeannie. I couldn't stand Darrin's "don't do any witchcraft" attitude. I'm also one of the rare few that likes the second Darrin better than the first.
Czas na Zywiec 06-06-2003, 04:11 PM I always enjoyed Jeannie better. But I thought Liz was more attracive that Barbara, especially in those later years. I liked the later seasons of Bewitched better too than the later seasons of IDOJ. I didn't like the idea that they got married.
Adamantium 06-06-2003, 04:20 PM Bewitched. Although, I don't see why Darrin didn't want her to use witchcraft. I also think Samantha is more attractive (if only she wore Jeanie's outfit;) ) and she is the better character. Samantha was more independant than Jeanie, who just worshiped Tony Nelson.
Sean Snow 06-06-2003, 05:56 PM I preferred Bewitched, and I thought Elizabeth Montgomery was prettier than Barbara Eden even though both are prettier. I love Bewitched, but I only like I Dream of Jeannie. O_O
Brandon 06-06-2003, 05:57 PM Bewitched. Something about IDOJ is 'ugh' to me.
Impressions 06-06-2003, 07:49 PM I'm not that too fond of I Dream of Jeannie, because it always seemed like Jeannie was always getting into trouble or was trying to be the center of attention, when she was actually getting in the way of things. I like Bewitched, because I thought Samantha was intelligent, kind, and adorable, I thought that if she was in a difficult situation, she would always find her way out of it and she always knew when to use her magic and when it wasn't necessary.
Unwanted Angel 06-06-2003, 09:18 PM I Dream Of Jennie. I watch Bewitched when nothing else is on. But i watch IDOJ everytime it is on and i can't wait for the marithon tomorrow!
And although Elizabeth Montgomery is very pretty Barbara Eden....:eyes:
I don't care what enyone says...Barbara Eden is beautiful!
Central Perk 06-06-2003, 09:30 PM Defintely Bewitched. I like Samantha so much more than Jeannie. Jeannie's "Yes, Master" got old pretty quickly, imo. I also liked the supporting characters more in Bewitched, especially Serena.
Crimson and Clover 06-06-2003, 10:16 PM i like I Dream of Jeannie better but i think that Elizabeth Montgomery is prettier than Barbara Eden (although she was pretty too.)
Chad22 06-06-2003, 10:32 PM VERY Close. I Would say its a tie but Jeannie wins By An Inch.
Kristina 06-07-2003, 10:19 AM I like 'I Dream of Jeannie' most but I've been getting into 'Bewitched' lately too.
Christopher 06-07-2003, 05:09 PM Jeannie is more attractive but I like Bewitched better.
Before I read (and become influenced by) the replies to my original post, I just want to say that after TV Land's Jeannie marathon I fell in love with the show all over again. The B&W episodes are by far the weakest ones. If we were able to change our votes, i'd change mine to IDJ.
pandora_spocks 06-13-2003, 05:46 PM Bewitched, of course. I'm glad that a lot of you think that Elizabeth is much prettier than Barbara, and of course, I think Liz is absolutely gorgeous!
This is going beyond the shows, but if you compared how Barbara looks today with how Liz looked before she got sick you can obviously see that even Liz was still much more beautiful than Barbara. Barbara has had way too many facelifts and Liz would've never done that because she didn't believe in that nonsense.
Believe it or not, but I've seen IDOJ it's okay, but it's basically too blah for my taste in shows. Worshipping the guy you're supposed to be receiving commands from isn't exciting to me. As with Darrin and Samantha there's actually a love story there. Sure, they get into funny situations and sure Darrin doesn't approve of Samantha's powers, but in the long run it doesn't matter to him because he's got something no other guy will ever have and he knows it. The only reason he really objects to witchcraft is because he doesn't want to put Samantha (and later Tabitha and Adam) in danger. Plus, he wants to live a normal life because he already knows that he could have everything by just a twitch of Sam's nose, but making something of yourself by yourself is the point. And doesn't he already really have everything already because he has Samantha? There's much more involved with Bewitched than IDOJ. Plus, there's something about IDOJ that really just ticks me off. And that ladies and gentlemen is why I prefer Bewitched over IDOJ.
I'm glad that a lot of you think that Elizabeth is much prettier than Barbara, and of course, I think Liz is absolutely gorgeous!
I'd say that Liz probably looked her best in the first season on BW, but before the "Jeannie Uncorked" marathon I forgot how good looking Barbara actually was, especially with her hair down and compared to how she looks now.
I_Love_Fonzie 06-19-2003, 02:51 AM I certainly like I Dream of Jeannie much better than Bewitched, despite I do like Bewitched. I think both Barbara Eden and Elizabeth Montgomery were very beautiful, but I think Barbara was much more beautiful.
dlemond 06-20-2003, 12:19 AM I like Bewitched better.
But the thing that both shows had in common was the holier than thou attitudes of both Darrin and Tony -the "don't use witchcraft/ don't use magic" thing.
Plus, these guys never wanted to let themselves experience anything with the world at their fingertips? Who are these people? I'm not saying go hog wild, but give me a break.
The thing that bugs me about IDOJ a little more was the whole subservient thing, calling him master over and over. Though Jeanie did do what she wanted most of the time it was always about Tony. And again, there was something about that "master" thing and her buzzing around him all the time, trying to please him.
And conversely, Samantha was a stronger and more fun character in my opinion. Even though she tried to please Darrin non-stop too, she spent a lot of time getting around his decrees and basically defying him going off doing her thing, even lying to him somewhat often.
When Jeanie defied Tony it seemed like it always had to do with something with her magic in order to make him happy.
That make any sense?
¤I Love Clay Aiken¤ 08-04-2003, 09:08 PM Watching Jeannie this weekend, I found myself laughing out loud a lot, as with Bewitched I didnt as much. I used to always say Bewitched all the way, but I think Ive come to a conclusion. I prefer Bewitched B&W episodes with Dick York over colored, and I prefer Jeannies colored episodes over their B&W episodes. So it evens it out. But, if I had to watch only one for a whole week... Id probably go with Jeannie. But it all depends on the episodes.
LucyFan 08-04-2003, 09:18 PM I love both Bewitched and I Dream Of Jeannie about the same. I have seen them many times and enjoy each show a lot. I love Jeannie's sense of excitement and Samantha's sense of calmness. I don't know which one I like better because lately I've been watching a lot of I Dream Of Jeannie (more than Bewitched) and I concluded that each one of the shows have both there ups and downs. Therefore, WITCH makes them equal.
Arfies 08-04-2003, 11:09 PM Bewitched, OF COURSE! :D In my opinion, better writing, acting, directing, plots, themes, and it just all seemed to "fit". Attractiveness-wise, I'd rather look like EM. :)
Here's another debate on the topic of the two shows:

I Dream of Jeannie 08-06-2003, 09:23 AM I can't believe I missed this post, lol, anyway, everyone knows what I'm going to say, I Dream of Jeannie ALL THE WAY!!!!
I like Bewitched too, but there was always something I didnt' like about Bewitched. Darrin was always trying to make Samantha something she wasn't he never let her use witchcraft unless he was in trouble, Tony on the other hand let Jeannie blink things for him and stuff, he just didn't want her to do stuff that would get him in trouble. Though there is that overbearing quality to both guys underneath it all they were madly in love with the ladies.
barwars 08-06-2003, 01:10 PM Both VERY good shows.
I didn't like the idea of Darrin's no witchcraft rule.
But I also thought the inclusion of Endora gave Bewitched that edge over IDOJ.
Both had very good story lines and characters.
But over all.... Bewitched
And for better looking.... definately Liz Montgomery.

I totally agree, also BW had a mean-spirited tone unlike IDJ. Also, L.Hagman was so much better than D.York's one-dimensional grimacing. I also think Barbara Eden is so much more attractive and seductive, L.M. doesn't even come close.
Small Wonderian 08-06-2003, 09:04 PM I like watching Bewitched. :)
dandelion wine 08-06-2003, 09:05 PM Bewitched! I'm going with Samantha as the more attractive of the two.
Ms Garthe Knight 08-07-2003, 08:40 PM I like both shows but if I were to forced to watch a whole day of one of these shows it would be I dream of Jeannie.
I dream of Jeannie was funny well both shows were, but there was also the sexual tension there between the lead charcters that gave the show a bit of an edge for me. Plus the fact the Barbara Eden and Larry Hagman did a lot of work together outside I dream of Jeannie, show how much of a great couple they were together.
As far as which one is more attractive I thought they were both beautiful. I always thought Barbara Eden had one of the best figures in the business back in the 60s. Barbarba Eden is in her 70s and still a icon of beauty.
onefortheroad 08-10-2003, 06:40 PM I haven't seen either in a while, but I think i liked Jeannie better.
wayman 01-23-2004, 11:59 PM I Dream of Jeannie. Although I do like "Bewitched," - just not as much. Tony had the added burden of trying to hide Jeannie from the rest of the world as well as her magic. Darrin never had to try and hide Samantha, just her magic. I know in the last season of "I Dream of Jeannie," Tony and Jeannie married and then everyone knew about Jeannie, but I feel that took away part of the fun of the show.
Bugiddle 01-24-2004, 02:36 AM I have always preferred Bewitched to IDOJ. As a kid watching Bewitched, I guess it was more entertaining to me - the magic that Samantha did seemed better, plus Tabitha was about my age so I enjoyed watching her on the show. Jeannie seemed just too subservient, and the way she whined to Tony really bugged me. (I do like Babara Eden as a person, though. I liked her acting much better in "Harper Valley PTA".) Sam was much more independent, and I liked the way she often stood up to Darrin.
The Modfather 01-24-2004, 10:00 AM It's pretty much a tie. But IDOJ wins.
Fallon97 09-05-2016, 04:35 AM I prefer I Dream of Jeannie.
Rookielove 09-05-2016, 04:39 AM I Dream of Jeannie is my favorite. I love Jeannie's spunk and independence.
PhoenixAcres 09-05-2016, 04:28 PM I have to go with Dream of Jeannie. It just seemed to me more fun and exciting to watch, with all the outlandish plots and memorable supporting characters. Though honestly, I've only seen very little of Bewitched, which struck me as somewhat bland. It's nowhere near being a "bad" show, but given the two, Jeannie is my favorite without a doubt.
KatieAnn 09-05-2016, 06:01 PM Bewitched.
I don't think I've ever seen a full episode of "I Dream of Jeannie." I just could never get into it. I didn't like the "master" angle.
Pixie Tink 09-12-2016, 10:58 AM I was never really into either of the show, but I do prefer Bewitched over I Dream of Jeannie.
