Im sure you have heard of the free music opportunities on the net like Nabster and WinMX do you guys download free music??? Do u think that it is wrong??? I do it! And yes it is stealing, but hey these people are millionares already so what's the big deal. I think the companies are the real thiefs. We are just innocent by standars who are reeping the free benefits. Im trying to get as many songs as I can before this opportunity is gone :D

i do it. i dont consider it stealing though. If a song can't be bought on a cd, then I'm not taking away from anything. (i.e. AI songs) .. and for songs that are on Cds, If i like the song.. I buy the Cd.

Absolutely. I have a huge CD and record collection, and I use file-swapping services to find out if I'm going to like an album before I buy it. I've totally given up on radio stations and music video cable channels, because they're all corporate whores whose playlists are bought and sold by the record labels. Too many times I've sold my CDs back to the store because the album-tracks were unbearable and the only good song was the single.

I also don't feel guilty in the slightest for downloading things that are out-of-print. I'd pay for it if it was available...

The RIAA should be ashamed of themselves, by the way. It's their own fault MP3s have become such a problem for them. $20 for one CD? Good lord, that's a lot of money. Lower your prices, RIAA, and support the good artists. Then the consumers will come back to the record stores.

i am not going to buy a $15 dollar cd or more just for one song that is at the moment one of my faves.

Music is free on the radio if you want to record it onto an audio cassette. The only difference between that and computer downloading is that it takes a hell of a lot longer to actually download the song, you have to have a computer, and you have to have internet access that you pay for every month. That amounts to a lot more than buying every single CD you want.

ummm ok...
but yor forgetting one thing...
who has time to sit by the radio all day waiting for them to play a song that they will talk all over anyway in the begining and usually cut off in the end before it is finished... Im not going to buy cassette tapes ever again.. those are the 8 tracks of the 90's

If I bought a CD for every song I liked, I'd have probably 600 CDs. But with KaZaA I just burn that song and put it on a mix.

Some people can't afford a CD burner and CD-R's, such as myself. And a CD player in their car. So I still use cassettes whenever I'm driving.

I have at least 25 and they have anywhere from 14-32 songs each on them. Not to mention the albums I've burned and then the albums I've copied from people

Like I said, none. I have about 12 CD's I bought, (For $20 each, I don't have enough money to buy a new CD every week.), but I made sure I liked the majority of the songs on the CD's. And I do. I have over 100 songs downloaded (I have dial-up, yup.). I make my own money, so don't get the luxury of being spoiled by the parents like some people in the world.

I do it. I think if you can record songs off the radio, the computer should be considered a legal device to "record" songs so to speak. All the music sharing programs won't get shut down because a lot of them share more than music and even if they do you still keep all the songs you already have.

How many songs do people have downloaded by the way? I have around 700 right now.

Some might, Audio Galaxy and Napster have been... Yea many of them share all different types of files and the makers argue that its not their fault that the prog is used in an illegal way... Though Ive heard of possibilities of them hacking into computers to delete the MP3's... unlikely though...

Yes, I download music off of KaZaA, but not a lot. Every once in a while, when there is a song that I really like that I don't want to buy the whole cd for, I will download it. I don't consider it stealing, but I really don't think its a good thing to do. The singers that are really good, and they deserve money for their music, don't deserve to be ''jiped'' just because we are penny pinchers. I think that the price for cd's is way to high, and if they would go down on the prices, I don't think near as many people would burn cd's.Who wants to go out and spend $20 for a cd that has 10 songs? NOT ME!

I've never downloaded a song, I usually get CD's from the library and then just burn the songs I like. I don't think there is anything wrong with downloading though.

My car didn't even come with a cassette player, and it's a 98. I was actually very shocked.

And about CD Burners. Why in the hell are external ones more than internal?? It's a flucking ripoff. I have a laptop...no place to put an internal one in.

I dabbled with Napster when it first came out, mostly to learn the then emerging technology, and understood at the time that it was "wrong", by law.

But, I gave up on it, because the quality just wasn't there. And I recall news stories from the period claiming that the big publishing houses were hosting "Trojan horse" type viri on some sites as a means of fighting back. So, it just didn't seem worth the bother.

Years later, I did start checking CD's out of my local library, ripping them, and then putting those on a mini MP3 player to listen to while riding my bicycle. Mostly editions by a particular artist where I already had most of their work on LP, but for whatever reason never bought THAT particular one, so it was a cheap way to fill some gaps AND have music for my bike rides.

But, that was "stealing" too. And I know that.

Too bad political discussion is forbidden fruit here, a nice debate about intellectual property rights might be fun.

Oh the struggles the young generations have, my music has been "free" all my long
life.

Interestingly (IMO) the thing that makes it viable, also makes it unattractive. (lossy) compression. And this applies to video as well as audio.

If you are ripping music from an LP, and digitizing it into *.wav format...you can get a passable recording. But the file size is huge, and complicates electronic transfer and/or mass storage.

Compressing the files to a more compact format speeds transfer times and makes mass storage more practical, but the "umph" is gone.

I ripped my own CD's years ago.

I feel like I have paid the piper and then some. You see I purchased music on cassette tapes back in the 1980s and then repurchased the same albums again in the 1990s for compact disks.

And here's a not very pleasant memory. Those popular albums were 17.99 to 22.50 at retail stores. And CDs in the early 1990s were around 30-40 dollars. Nobody was selling new CDs for bargain prices during those days. Not to rationalize theft of music, but some of us young folks spent a fortune amassing our collections.

I still have most of my CD's as stores offered crummy sell back offers for used CDs. Stores would offer 2-3 dollars on something that I originally purchased for 25-30 bucks; then attempt to sell used CDs for 18.50, at least that's what I remember from 2002.

I don't. I get music from library CDs and I buy it from Amazon and iTunes.
