View Full Version : Worst Recordable Tape Brand
Sean Snow 05-29-2003, 05:28 PM Since many of you record stuff and trade, I was wondering what brand of tapes you thought were the worst?
For me, I'd have to say LDK and Sony. Sony tapes always mess up in my VCR. I've bought about 4 10-packs within the last year and out of those I've had at least 5-6 defective tapes altogether, if not more. And the ones that aren't defective sometimes skip or get stuck in the VCR. But nowadays those are the easiest ones to get..my favorite one, Maxell, is now available in only one store here. - sniffle -

I definitely agree with you. We live in a small town, but the best they've got here are the Fuji brand.

LDK and Maxell. I dont like Maxell tapes at ALL. I have never had a problem with Sony tapes ever. I like Sony, Fuji and Kodak but they dont sell Kodak here where I live. Now man if they still made SCOTCH videos I'd be all over those.

LOL it's okay. I just prefer to not tape myself on them. I taped an Olympic event in 1996 and the Maxell tape (Silver) was really bad qualtiy afterwards. So now I dont like to use them.
But that's just moi :)
secret_defender 05-30-2003, 12:06 PM If you can afford to get tapes by the bulk (60 or more at a time) the best place is Tape World. www.tapeworld.com they will beat any price.

it's cheaper to buy tapes like that (single ones) at Big Lots. They are 97 cents each.
Warm & Fuzzy 05-30-2003, 05:15 PM LDK suck-- they really do. I always get annoyed when I recieve one of those in the mail.
I also don't like RCA. They aren't too bad, but something about it just drives me nuts.
I perfer JVC myself and that is what I use for everything.
daydreamer11 05-31-2003, 03:10 PM I myself think fuji is the best, but i use a cheap brand called Maxonic, they are only a $1 and the dollar store and record very well. i have never had any complaints about them. It is very hard to find good 8 hour tapes here, most 8 hour tapes around here arent high quality tapes. =)

Maxwell is the brand of them all. Maybe that's why they are $1.99 for 4-LOL

You should never use those types of tapes to send to people. I'm sure if they knew you were buying them at the dollar store they'd probably have a fit. Those tapes are reused, blanked, taped over and are so cheaply made it's not even funny.
You can get tapes at Walmart for just as much (or less) and they are quality tapes.
I'd stay far away from dollar store tapes.

Yes never ever buy Blank vcr tapes out of a dollar store. Especially if you want them last.
dawsongirl 06-01-2003, 12:09 AM I like JVC the best, but I can't find them anymore! I'm stuck with Sony (which I don't like) and Maxell.
Anyone know where I can get JVCs at a reasonable price?

Big Lots, $.96. I bought 40 of them on Friday.
I have 13 left.
I go through tapes WAYYYYYYYYYYY tooooo fast.
Cheryl Harrell 06-02-2003, 03:33 PM Darn, I went to BIG LOTS the other day & forgot to look & see if they had any cheap tapes...
dawsongirl 06-02-2003, 06:10 PM Hmm...must go to Big Lots!

See they aren't the cheap tapes though like you would buy in a Dollar General store, they are quality name tapes like JVC or Sony. I've also bought Zenith tapes there, which I LOVED. I wish I could find those suckers again!

Don't forget the number one brand, TDK.
For me, the avoidable brands would be...
Of course LDK, RCA & Maxell.
LDK because, well, they're just junk in a tape shell. And, they tend to be more expensive than good brands...ridiculous!
RCA started out OK for me, but after I taped on the same segment twice, the picture and sound got really bad. We're talking pixelated, hurt-your-eyes junk...seems to be popular with a lot of people though...just not made for repeated use.
Maxell - these aren't the worst, but they're not the best. Ever since they switched from Gold, Silver & Bronze to Standard, High, and Hi-Fi, the quality of tape went downhill. I rarely buy Maxell anymore, unless I find a Silver or Gold tape. Bronze, though, was pretty good and seeing as it was their cheapest line, was even better than Gold & Silver! If you find Bronze - get them!
As for Big Lots, I've never seen JVC tape there. I did see TDK & Sony though, both were about $1.00 each...I buy JVC at Sears, although they have 10-packs for $10 at Best Buy...
My favorite brand is still TDK...I rarely use anything else. Panasonic is good as well...
Skywalker 06-12-2003, 12:23 AM I'm surprised no one has said anything about blockbuster blank tapes. Man they are awful.
My all time fav brand is JVC its just the best.
But here are some other brands i like
TDK
Sony
Panasonic
here are the brands i HATE
RCA
Maxell
LDK
Evita Peron 06-12-2003, 01:50 PM So far, I have not used a bad tape brand. The best though is RCA in my opinion. I can get a 10 pack for $9.99 at Wal-Mart or K-Mart.
