View Full Version : The Episode when Lamont is about to get Married is Very Very Confusing because... TVFactFan 05-25-2003, 12:03 PM Lamont was about to marry a girl the viewers never saw. This woman was not seen in no previous episodes. maxcarey 05-25-2003, 01:52 PM There wasn't much character development for Janet, but she was seen by viewers before the "marriage" episode. In fact the first time she was seen (near the end of the fifth season), the whole premise was that Lamont was falling for her quickly - thus there was no need for extensive buildup. However by the end of the 5th season, Lamont had fallen in love (Lamont in Love), gotten engaged (The Engagement Man Always Rings Twice) and there was development of Janet's son Roger (Sergeant Gork). Additionally, the last episode that season (Camping Trip) was done solely because Lamont would be getting married, and he wanted to bond with his father. Janet was also a character in 6th season episodes, Fred's Extra Job and Here Today, Gone Today before the impending wedding. So as you can see, Janet fairly ingrained in the Sanford storyline before the "wedding." Not Janet, the girl that turned lamont down on his wedding day in season one. *PinkLady* 05-25-2003, 05:26 PM It was only the third episode of the first season. Maybe the writers couldn't find a way to write her into the first two episodes. TVFactFan 05-25-2003, 05:37 PM Originally posted by *~PinkLady59~* It was only the third episode of the first season. And it was only the 3rd episode. He was single in episode 2 and getting married in episode 3.LOL Very strange. Also in the episode, "Here Today, Gone Today", Janet's ex-husband comes to visit and asks Janet to let him come back in her and Roger's life and she has to choose between him or Lamont. I think i may record over that episode because it makes no sense to me at all. One of my least favorite episodes maxcarey 05-26-2003, 09:10 AM Crystal is irrelevant. The whole point of the story was to establish that Lamont can't get away from his father (which was the central storyline of many first season episodes). Lamont struggles that entire season with the fact that he is rapidly becoming a "common junkman" like his father and tries to do everything he can to get away from that (move out, get another job, get married). Hey, its a sitcom, quit overanalyzing it. TVFactFan 05-26-2003, 09:16 AM Originally posted by maxcarey Crystal is irrelevant. Hey, its a sitcom, quit overanalyzing it. I wasn't really analyzing, that episode was just not very good and unclear to me. I guess I always seen a wedding as somehing that u lead up to rather than have one in the 3rd episode of the series. We have had discussions about sanford and Son not having a finale and I think Lamont getting married would have been a great idea. maxcarey 05-26-2003, 10:59 AM I always seen a wedding as somehing that u lead up to rather than have one in the 3rd episode of the series But that wasn't the point of that episode. Crystal was a prop to establish Lamont's character and his desire to get away from his father's way of life. The fact that it came in the third episode was actually good timing as the character development of Fred and Lamont was not yet established. IMO, that was one of the funniest episodes of the first season, where Fred gets off some great lines: "You know darn well you had that (the toaster) left over from the riots" "Hazel, if I hit you I bet your lips get to the hospital before the ambulance." "Aunt Hazel??......You mean Witch Hazel." And after the scene in the church he turns to Reverend Trumbull and says "That was a beautiful sermon" (which incidentially is cut out of TV Land). jekouptown 05-27-2003, 01:49 PM I UNDERSTAND BOTH POINTS. 1. CRYSTALS CHARACTER IS NEVER DEVELOPED. 2. THE EPISODE ITSELF IS FUNNY. THE PARTY WAS FUNNY THOUGH AND SOLOMON YOU WOULD HAVE TO ADMIT THAT. YOU FOLLOW THE SITCOM LIKE A SOAP BUT, ITS NOT MEANT TO BE THAT CORRECT. TAKE IT FOR WHAT IT IS. REV. TRIMBLE WAS MENTIONED BEFORE SO HE DIDN'T JUST POP UP. DarleneIllyria 05-27-2003, 07:16 PM Originally posted by jekouptown I UNDERSTAND BOTH POINTS. 1. CRYSTALS CHARACTER IS NEVER DEVELOPED. 2. THE EPISODE ITSELF IS FUNNY. Yeah, ditto to what you said. Fonzie87 05-28-2003, 07:49 PM Ok, now I'm confused! Did Lamont ever get married? I like Sanford and Son, but I haven't seen all that many episodes. I seen Fred almost get married, but nothing on Lamont. TVFactFan 05-28-2003, 08:29 PM Originally posted by Fonzie87 Ok, now I'm confused! Did Lamont ever get married? The wedding i was referring to was the 3rd episode of this series when the Girl told lamont at the altar that she didn't want to marry him. Up until that point she was never seen and there was never any mention of Lamont being engaged. So that's why i was saying the episode was confusing. jekouptown 05-29-2003, 12:56 PM Originally posted by SOLOMON No lamont never got married. He was just engaged to Janet in the last season. HER NAME WAS CRYSTAL Tyler77 05-29-2003, 02:29 PM And we must remember that as "Sanford and Son" evolved, so did Lamont himself. In the early episodes, Lamont was more fast talking and sneakier thn he was in the later episodes (where he played referee between Fred and Esther). Think of Lamont having the same personality as Rollo. I like that episode where he attempts to wed Judy, and all of those God awful gifts at the reception!! And it's where we see Aunt Hazel and Uncle Edgar for the first and last time, never to be referred to again. Harold Steptoe 06-13-2003, 09:10 AM This is based on the classic Steptoe and Son episode "And Afterwards At...". urtoolman 06-17-2003, 05:14 PM I thought that episode was funny. I'm not really into following it as a soap opera either, I take it as it is as jekouptown mentioned, but again thats just me. W.J. Griffin 07-08-2003, 01:50 PM You know, I thought I had answered this question the last time it was asked, i.e. it's not about Lamont and Crystal, it's about the Sanford's crazy realatives, but that WAS a few threads back. There's really no reason for anyone to become confused by this episode...Crystal was never, ever referred to again in any of the following episodes, and, really, sitcoms of this era weren't slaves to continuity like they are now ("All In The Family" notwithstanding), so it seems unreasonable to become peeved over one story in hundreds... I have to admit, though...having Solo-er, I mean "Sitcom Analyzer" ask these questions sure does keep the excitement quoteint up!!  catlover79 09-05-2007, 06:15 PM Lamont was about to marry a girl the viewers never saw. That was a great episode and Fred did get off some great lines. I loved it when Fred wraps all the food up in the tablecloth and throws it out to the relatives after Lamont kicks them out of the house. Fred shouts something like "And don't say we didn't feed you." Hilarious. catlover79 09-07-2007, 12:22 AM ^ :brent BEAUTIFUL. DirtyHarry 09-09-2007, 07:17 PM I enjoyed the show where the girl (Crystal) says no at the altar. The scene back at Fred's house is super funny. Fred thows the wedding cake out and hits one of his relatives in the face! The other lines, mentioned earlier on this thread, are classics! Ireneparalegal 09-09-2007, 07:20 PM Who the hell are all those posters on page 1???????? Funny when a thread is bumped up you see the name of posters that have just "disappeared".
