View Full Version : Racial equality in your town/at your school

How many different races, religions, nationalities, etc. are represented in your area?
My area is 99.9% white. Out of about 600 students/faculty at my school, 595 of us are white, 4 of us are black and one is biracial (Puerto Rican/white.) The town isn't much better - basically the only other racially different people are the families of the people I mentioned above. As far as religions or nationalities...the majority is German and Protestant.
I think it sucks that we have no diversity in our town. It makes us look racist or something, when we're really not.

My town is small (around 7000) We are just outside of Flint, Michigan. The population in our area is mostly caucasion but there are several blacks and hispanics. There are a lot of Czech's and Hungarians here. I would say that a large portion of the population is either Roman Catholic or Methodist. They have the largest church buildings anyway!;) It is a nice town all in all.:)

My neighbor to the left is Phillipine. My neighbor to the right is Sri Lankan. My neighbor across the street is Irish. My neighbor in the house behind me is African-American. And I, myself, am Hispanic. I'd say we're pretty representative of the melting pot New York is known to be :)

I live in an averaged sized town so I guess you could say there's a good amount of diversity. Most of the people I know are Roman Catholic (that includes me) but just because that's what the majority of people are doesn't mean that there's really no other religion here. I think there's a lot of different ones. There's also a lot of racially different people, too...but the largest group is probably causcasian. Still, though, everyone you ask is going to be something different from the last...

Let's just say my town is called Sterling Whites. We have almost no diversity at all. My school is about 98% white and that's a lot more diversity than when I was in elementary school, when the entire 6th grade graduating class was white. Diversity is becoming a little more apparant though, my neighbors on either side of us are Chinese and Albanian.

Just because your town is predominatly white isn't being racist, peoples actions and how they conduct themselfs in life shows what kind of person they are.

not many african-americans, a few asians...i think we have more foreign exchange students than minorities who actually live here.

Grandville itself is pretty much white, but the Grand Rapids area as a whole is diverse. My mom told me that companies use Grand Rapids as a testing place for new products. Because of all the it's diversity.

Well Oklahoma City is pretty segregated actually. We have black ppl....not like Philadelphia or New York or L.A. or Atlanta etc population but there is diversity. Our school is 12% black, 3% Indian, 5% Asian, 3% Hispanic, and 78% white, and at our school, all the blacks and hispanics with each other, asians with eachother, etc.... I live in white suburbia also, but it's not like I hardly EVER see anyone of different races. If someone said they were Buddhist or something they'd probably be laughed at here....... I realllllly miss living in the city.....there are a lot of biggoted kids at our school even tho they dont believe they are...

Your town sounds exactly like mine, but I don't even know if we have 5 african americans in our school. We probably have 600 kids in our school, and only 1 is black.

Were I live it is mostly blacks and whites. My town has a Catholic church, a Methodist church and a Presbyterian church. those are the only three that I know of off hand but I'm sure that there are others.

I didn't phrase that right; I couldn't think of another way to put it. Let's see...it just feels like we're being exclusive. It's strange that my town only represents one small part of the world's diversity.

Sorry about that; I'm not good at explaining myself most of the time.

My town has just under 5,000 people in it. 99% are white and upper middle class. Religions vary, but my town has said to have "as much diversity as the milk shelf at Kings." My high school has about 1200 kids (it's a regional high school, about 7 towns send their kids there) and it's about 90% white. Because the school takes students from other towns that have a larger hispanic population than us, there is some more diversity. Of the minorities in our school, I'd say about 80% is Latinos and 20% African Americans. However, my community IS diverse in the languages spoken. Much of our town is made of European businessmen that got transfered to work in NY, so they settled here. Many of my friends are billingual and speak English/Dutch or English/French or English/German, which is really cool because they are equally fluent in both languages..

My city is fairly diverse. Most of the people here are caucasian and christian or catholic, although there are Jewish, Buddhist, Muslim, Atheist and others as well. There are a lot of Asians: Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese. Some blacks, some Mexicans, First Nations. Immigrants also come to Canada so there are some Russians and other people with different backgrounds, as well. Canada is very diverse.

I remember about 13 years ago reading about some neo-Nazi skinhead punks beating an Ethiopian man to death in Portland. You'd think that in Oregon and Washington things wouldn't happen up here. :(

I grew up in Scarsdale, NY, a suburb about 20 miles from Manhattan. Everyone knows that NYC is very diverse, but my town was virtually 100% white from my earliest memories until I turned 17 and went away to college. In fact, the only difference now is that it has a substantial Japanese population, most of whom came to America recently. Many of the Japanese are businessmen in NYC, and others own shops. Some are only in America on temporary work visas.

Do you? I was lucky enough to visit California a number of times on business in the late 80s and really loved it, especially Carmel.

Could it be that sometimes non-whites just aren't attracted to certain towns (not because certain towns are predominately white, but perhaps for other reasons like location, weather, etc.)?

No, I'm afraid the explanation is that until recently non-whites haven't been able to afford to live in certain affluent communities, more often living, for example, in cities than in suburbs.

I live in upstate South Carolina... so we're majority white.. i'd say 75% white and the other 25% make up other races (including hispanics and african americans)

Yeah, that's one of the main places I was, Huntington Beach. My business took me to the McDonnell Douglas image processing lab there in the late 80s. Huntington Beach, Long Beach, Seal Beach, Costa Mesa - I loved them. Boy, what amazing places. But I don't mean to highjack the thread, which is on a different topic.
