BrandonS 05-19-2003, 10:45 AM 1. Roger Zelazny
Writes cool sci-fi/fantasy. Start with "Nine Princes in Amber"
or "Doorways in the Sand," since they are the easiest to get
into.
2. Lawrence Sanders
The absolute master of clever, witty mysteries.
3. Edith Nesbitt
Stories about children who discover magic. Suitable for
children, but great for adults too. One good one is "The
Phoenix and the Carpet."
Crimson and Clover 05-19-2003, 10:55 AM Charles Dickens-everything by him.(my friends think im weird but i love his work)
Penny Lane 05-19-2003, 11:06 AM James Michener
Laura Ingalls Wilder

Hi!
I loved David Copperfield and Nicholas Nickleby. Never read "A Christmas Carol," but the movie is sure great (especially the 50s version with Alastair Sim).
*PinkLady* 05-19-2003, 01:22 PM Sue Grafton - she writes really good mysteries.
Kurt Vonnegut Jr.
Morris Panych
They write pretty funny stuff. I reccommend Slapstick and Breakfast of Champions by Kurt Vonnegut Jr. and The Ends of the Earth and Seven Stories by Morris Panych. I haven't read all their stuff from both authors, but the ones I have read were really good.

I like Kurt Vonnegut's character, Kilgore Trout, the hack science fiction writer, who penned such classics as "Venus on the Half-Shell."

I like Patricia Cornwell a lot as well...even though I've only read about 5 of her books, maybe a bit more. I think they're the best when they have Kay in them...she's a really good character.
For any people who like comedy books...and are girls you might want to try:
Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging
On the Bright Side, I'm Now the Girlfriend of a Sex God
and
Knocked out by my Nunga-nungas
These are all by Louise Rennison who is an English author. These books are hilarious, you'll probably laugh about 10000 times each minute. The order in which I listed them is the order they go.
Also, I like books by James Patterson and Dean Koontz. I don't mind J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings series either.
I have a lot of books that I love, so I'll just name a few more.
I HIGHLY recommend the "His Dark Matters" trilogy by Philip Pullman, another English author. They are:
The Golden Compass
The Subtle Knife
and
The Amber Spyglass
Those are all really good fantasy books and are jam-packed with action, etc.
Sorry to have taken up so much of this post! But I like to read! haha!!!

Generally, I don't know what he's talking about, although I did enjoy "Julius Caesar" and "Hamlet." Recently, I tried to read "A Midsummer Night's Dream," but the Elizabethan English was kind of rough going.....

I hear ya! I've been reading Shakespeare since I was in middle school and I've always loved it. It's so interesting to see how much our language has changed. I didn't know until this year that "thou" was the informal version of you. (It always sounded formal to me) :) I did an acting class one summer and got to play Helena in A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM and Viola in TWELFTH NIGHT. Ah, memories...
My favorite writer of all time is Jane Austen, (if any of you are fans of hers, read "Northanger Abbey" it's the best!) I also read all of the Bronte sisters (I was named after Emily, but I think Charlotte's better). I've also got a thing for children's lit. Love L. Frank Baum ("The Wonderful Wizard of Oz") Lewis Carroll (Alice's Adventures in Wonderland) and CS Lewis (Chronicles of Narnia).
Right now I'm finally reading Stephen King - halfway through "The Shining" and I can't put it down.
If any of you are interested in old literature, check out Daphne DuMaurier and Jean Webster. Fabulous writers that are almost forgotten today :(

OMG, someone who knows REBECCA???? I'm so happy! Yes, she definately did write it. Hitchcock adapted three of her books for film: REBECCA, JAMAICA INN, and THE BIRDS - all wonderful books, all wonderful movies :)
Of course I love Louisa May Alcott. Although I read THE INHERITANCE (her first and previously unreleased novel.) Big disappointment. But come on, LITTLE WOMEN is a classic! I'm currently taking a course an American women authors and I was shocked that they didn't even mention her. Eeek. Well, I'm just gonna have to go set them straight

Ewan's My Man 05-22-2003, 10:38 PM I like Francine Pascal and Katherine Applegate. They both wrote books I read when I was little, Sweet Valley Twins (Pascal) and Animorphs (Applegate)...but have no fear...I'm not reading those NEmore. I'm more into their young adult books. Katherine Applegate has a book series called Making Waves...and that's awesome. And Francine Pascal has a book series called Fearless and those books kick major ass. Oh, and Cate Tiernen...I think that's her name has an awesome book series called Sweep.
Yea, they're good.
