View Full Version : Clowns!

I became aware a few years ago that many people don't like clowns, or are afraid of them, or are made to feel uncomfortable by them. It kind of surprised me, because my reaction had always been simply, "Okay, he's trying to be funny." I asked my then girlfriend why anyone would be afraid of clowns, and she said that she didn't like them because they had smiles painted on their faces, raising the question of what they were really thinking behind the facade. That's about as much as I understand the phenomenon of disliking or fearing clowns. Do you like them or hate them? For you clown haters out there, do you have any good stories? Anyone chased by a clown?

I think it's a bit silly to be creeped out by clowns cos they have the smile painted on. If they have it painted on- I just think 'it's make up' and if I wonder whats behind the facade, I'm not bothered by it. A person wouldn't work as a clown unless they wanted to- there are many other jobs needing the same ammount of qualifications - which is none, and pay the same.

I used to think nothing of clowns - they didn't bother me,or anything. Then, when I heard people talk about how freaked out they got by clowns, movies about evil clowns, etc.,it got me to thinking,so,I think it tainted my view of them, some.Maybe that sounds stupid, but it did.

The movie IT seriously gave me some mental problems growing up-- I was petrified of him!! I didnt start to get over it til I was like 15-- even now home alone @ nite I get freaked out!! I couldnt even go to the horror section of libraries or video stores- even now when I see it I jump! Ill never even try to watch that movie again. I think some people do have a genuine fear of them, and some people think it's cool or funny to be afraid of clowns. This phobia just seems a little trendy to me sometimes. I know that sounds weird but there's got to be someone else out there who shares the same theory lol ;)

BrandonS
05-15-2003, 08:43 AM
Speaking of it being trendy, for "Seinfeld" fans...there's a hilarious scene in which Kramer, who's always been afraid of clowns, is confronted by one in a dark alley at night. What makes it scarier is that the audience knows it's this psychotic martial arts expert dressed up to look like a clown from the opera playing next door.

But it's clear from these posts that many people really don't like them. If anyone has any cool stories about encounters with clowns, this is your chance to go public with it...

Everybody Loves A Clown
Gary Lewis

Everybody loves a clown, so why don't you?
Everybody laughs at the things I say and do
They all laugh when they see me comin'
But you don't laugh, you just go home runnin'
Everybody loves a clown, so why can't you?
A clown has feelings, too

I joke around at a party when you are there
But you don't laugh, you don't look, you just don't care
If you wonder why this clown is cryin'
Look a little closer, inside I'm dyin'
It's not easy to be in love, you see
When you're a clown like me'

I don't know how to say that I love you
'cause you would smile and say "Tell a joke or two"
Yes, I'm a clown but I don't wanna be
Why can'tcha see the other side of me?
Guess I'll be the guy who plays the part
Of a clown with a broken heart

Dreamin' of your love and not knowing where to start
Dreamin' of your love and not knowin' where to start
FADE
Dreamin' of your love and not knowin' where to start

My mother is a huge Stephen King fan, and while some of you grew up watching Sesame Street and Mister Rogers, I grew up watching THE SHINING, CARRIE, and of course, IT. And IT scared the cr@p out of me! I don't care what they say about PSYCHO, IT made me afraid to take a shower.

Since I've known the movie for over 10 years now, I can watch it without getting too scared - um, I think. I love Tim Curry - I've seen almost all of his movies, but it's pretty impossible to see that it's him under all that clown goop. Pennywise scared me for years. Now that I'm in my 20s he doesn't bother me at all... okay, I'm lying. But I did actually (and I can't believe I'm gonna admit this) name one of our cats "Pennywise."

Course, I've been afraid of clowns since I was born. I never liked them. Stephen King did nothing to help that. I love the movie - it scares me to no end but I love it!

Maybe there could be some kind of clown phobia therapy, in which three clowns surround you, in a small room, and all tell you jokes, in your face, at once, until you either die or don't care anymore.

Wow, I'm insensitive....Of course my own phobias are no laughing matter....

I found a Web site that has some material related to the fear of clowns. Here is the URL: http://www.clownz.com/index.html, and here is one case history I found there:

What a relief it is to find other's with the same fear of clowns that I have had all my life.My fear didn't start from a movie or anything, it was just that I always thought these things were monsters. How could people possibly laugh at these hideous beasts? My worst clown experience came just a few short years ago( I am now 32), I really had no choice but to take my two young sons to Ringling Bros. circus, even though I detested the idea of going. Everything was ok until the part comes when the head clown went to do his routine....The main part of his act is that he randomly selects several people from the audience to participate with him.As he selected many from the other side of the arena, I felt very safe...then he turned around and headed our way.My heart was beating rapidly as I realized that his eyes were locked with mine.I remember thinking" 10,000 people here and he has to come for me". Mind you, there was no way I was going anywhere with this clown...if I had to physically defend myself, then so be it...Sweat poured down my face as he came closer.Suddenly, I was face to face with IT, THE POLTERGEIST DOLL, and the KILLER CLOWNS all rolled into one.He must have seen the fear and determination in my eyes as he selected the man sitting directly in front of me.Needless to say, I have never gone back again. From then on, my wife has taken the boys to the circus instead of me.Thanks for listening...

Lol, I can totally understand that! I've been afraid of clowns my whole life too. I just remember one time in my elementary school there was a carnival going on and this clown singled me out. I think clowns have a radar that tells them exactly which person out of hundreds is afraid of them ;) I remember my dad trying to explain to me that this clown was nice, it was a lady, and she tried to talk to me. But all I saw was red hair and a scary white and red face. It just ain't right... ;)

Here's another interesting article I found about the fear of clowns:

http://health.nzoom.com/health_detail/0,2811,177764-399-406,00.html

Living In Fear - of Clowns

"Evil! Evil! Oh, dear God, but I hate clowns," says Shonda Purvis, 36. "Despise (them). Get the shaking heebs just thinking about them."

Purvis and others suffer from coulrophobia, the fear of clowns. They join an estimated 6.3 million Americans from ages 18 to 54 who have specific phobias, according to the Anxiety Disorders Association of America.

You scoff? For heaven's sake, you ask, who in the world would be afraid of Bozo? How could Ronald McDonald make anyone want to heave up her hamburger?

Ask Lisa Weihmuller of Arlington, who has feared clowns since visiting the circus at age six or seven. "A clown got up right in my face, and I could see his beard stubble underneath the clown makeup," she recalls.

"He smelled bad and his eyes were weird. He had this smile painted on his face, but he was not smiling. He was yucky. Scary. Freaky. Weird.

"I'm 45 now, and ever since then I stay as far away from clowns as I can."

Popular culture has long acknowledged a dark side of clowning. Its ancient roots embrace some aspects of shamanism and the supernatural.

Clowns may have evolved as jesters and tricksters, but the dark side never vanished. Even Disney acknowledged it: Remember those sadistic drunks who tortured Dumbo in Disney's animated classic?

Clowns in horror movies such as Poltergeist or Spawn are meant to scare the baggy pants off you. Pennywise, the clown in Stephen King's It , lives in the sewer, has razor-sharp claws and kills children. The Canadian theatrical horror clowns Mump and Smoot perform a cabaret of carnage. And don't forget that serial murderer John Wayne Gacy dressed up as a clown and performed at parties.

Yet even innocuous-seeming clowns can make people, especially children, tremble.

Put yourself in the place of small child visiting the circus for the first time. A stranger is suddenly bearing down on you. His face, barely recognisable as human, is smeared with ghastly makeup. He wears outlandish clothes and skateboard-size shoes. He has a huge red nose and flaming orange hair. He cackles wildly and makes other weird noises and instead of understanding your fear, the adults you're with - these people who are supposed to love you and protect you - why, they're laughing, they're telling you it's all right, for Pete's sake, they're even dragging you toward this horrible monster.

Maybe it's a wonder that kids aren't terrified of clowns.

Forrest York of Mesquite, Texas, recalls being traumatised by the Town Clown on the old Captain Kangaroo TV show. "I was sitting in the living room and all of a sudden the clown comes on," he says. "I'm scared, and I know I don't like this."

York, 38, has three boys and a girl. None is afraid of clowns. But when he takes his youngest boy to McDonald's, he has to turn over his son's box of chicken nuggets if it bears a picture of Ronald on the top.

"I'm not comfortable in any way looking at them," says York, who owns a T-shirt that reads "Can't Sleep Clowns Will Eat Me."

"It's a real discomfort and a need to get out of that situation. Just a real irrational discomfort," he says.

Andrew Wixcel of Oak Cliff, Texas, shares the feeling. It made his 30th birthday an ordeal. "A 'friend,' knowing my fear, sent a clown to my workplace to perform for me," says Wixcel, 40. "It wasn't funny. I asked him if he would leave if I gave him $US20, but he wouldn't. He made me watch him make a balloon wiener dog hat for me to wear. I was shaking by the time he left."

Wixcel says he doesn't really hate clowns, though. "I'm sure they're all good people. I don't have anything personal against clowns. I just don't like them. I don't want them near me."

Coulrophobia has spread to the Web, where sufferers can vent on sites such as www.ihateclowns.com and www.clownz.com . A sample posting:

"My hatred of clowns began when I was five years old. I was at a circus, and a clown came up to me and said, 'Would you like to see the monkey I have in my box?' Well, of course I did, so I said yes. When I looked into the box, there was no monkey ... only a mirror."

All this fear of clowns distresses Ruth Chaddick of Cuero, Texas. Chaddick, 48, is special events manager with Feld Entertainment, which operates the Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey circus. A Ringling clown for five years, she also worked with Ringling's now-defunct Clown College for 13 years. She taught clowning and makeup, among other things.

"(Ringling clowns) were trained to be sensitive," she says. "If someone was fearful, you would not push yourself on that person."

She can understand how children can be intimidated by their first real-life encounter with a clown. "Children are used to seeing clowns on TV," she says. "But at the circus, they're seeing this large person, all made up in strange clothes. Momma has pushed them into the clown's arms and said, 'Here, let's take a picture.' The parents have told them all their life not to talk to strangers, and all of a sudden here's a stranger."

Ringling clowns were taught how to deal with this, Chaddick says. "You make yourself small. You get down to their level - squat or whatever - (and) use a soft voice. We don't go around with big honking horns. Use a small voice, and take anything away that might be fearful to (kids)."

But sometimes, even small gestures and a soft voice don't help. "I walked into a store in Austin (Texas) one time in clown makeup and costume," Chaddick says, "and a grown woman - she really was fearful of clowns - she just freaked seeing me, and I just turned around and walked out."

It's as simple as that, Chaddick says: "If it's an out-of-control fright, you just remove yourself."

Dr Colin Ross, a Dallas psychiatrist, sees coulrophobia as a garden-variety phobia. It can be treated like most other phobias, with gradually increasing exposure to the source of the fear. He sketches out the procedure after the patient finds a therapist:

"You talk about it until you're comfortable with the subject. Then the therapist shows pictures. Then maybe you look at a clown doll across the room, then progress to holding it. Then a video of a clown, looking at it in longer increments. Then going to a museum or store with clown costumes. Then going to the circus, just walking in and out. Then staying for two minutes but not for the clown act," he says. Finally, you can face the music. And, hopefully, the clown.

"If that doesn't work, then you might try some anti-anxiety medications while you're doing this work. Then you might try a variety of medications," Ross says. If the fear still persists, "it might become a psychological puzzle - you might want to see if something else underlies this fear."

Yes, that's a good song, but it's called, Tears of a Clown.

Smokey Robinson
Tears Of A Clown

Now if there's a smile on my face,
it's only there tryin' to fool the public,
but when it comes down to foolin' you;
Now honey, that's quite a different subject.

But don't let my glad expression
give you the wrong impression.
Really I'm sad.
I'm sadder than sad.
You're gone and I'm hurtin' so bad.
Like a clown I pretend to be glad.

(chorus)
Now there's some sad things known to man,
but ain't too much sadder than
the tears of a clown
when there's no one around.

Now if I appear to be carefree,
it's only to camouflage my sadness.
In order to keep my pride I try
to cover the hurt with a show of gladness.

But don't let my show convince you
that I've been happy since you
decided to go.
Oh, I need you so.
I'm hurt and I want you to know.

(chorus)

Just like Pagliacci did,
I try to keep my sadness hid.
(aaargh! I can't remember! It'll come to me and I'll send it along.)
But in my lonely room I cry
the tears of a clown
when there's no one around.

Speaking on clowns, I've always loved this song but never understood the clown symbolism. Anyone get it?

Send In The Clowns - Judy Collins

Isn't it rich?
Are we a pair?
Me here at last on the ground,
You in mid-air..
Where are the clowns?

Isn't it bliss?
Don't you approve?
One who keeps tearing around,
One who can't move...
Where are the clowns?
Send in the clowns.

Just when I'd stopped opening doors,
Finally knowing the one that I wanted was yours.
Making my entrance again with my usual flair
Sure of my lines...
No one is there.

Don't you love farce?
My fault, I fear.
I thought that you'd want what I want...
Sorry, my dear!
And where are the clowns
Send in the clowns
Don't bother, they're here.

Isn't it rich?
Isn't it queer?
Losing my timing this late in my career.
And where are the clowns?
There ought to be clowns...
Well, maybe next year.

Who can forget that face painted as he's got bodies hidden in the crawlspace of his home.
And yes, BrandonS, Kramer was deathly afraid of clowns. He was afraid of his own shadow. Ohhh, I miss Seinfeld.

Ok, by special request of Sean Sean I'll tell you all a little story about clowns. :)

A few days ago on Jerry Springer they had this girl on. When she was young, she loved clowns. As she got older, she developed clown fetishes. So, the reason she came to the show was to tell her boyfriend that she was cheating on him with his friend and only started seeing his friend because he'd dress up as a clown for her.

One of the many reasons why clowns can be scary.....

Yeah, that was so great when he ran into Crazy Joe Davola dressed as a clown in the alley outside the opera.

I was never afraid of clowns growing up, never had a problem with 'em. Then I saw a picture of John Wayne Gacy in his clown makeup, heard what he'd done to all of those teenage boys.. that was it for me.

After seeing the clown pic -->

Pennywise scarred me for life. It really did. If 'It' wasnt a clown and it was a person, that movie would not have been NEARLY as scary.

Actually, I knew it was "Tears of a Clown." I'm being funny that way. Seeing almost everyone's scared of them.

Anyone remember a song on Dr. Demento called "Kinko, the Kid-Lovin' Clown"?? Now THAT'S scary.

I was traumatized by that movie with those scary dudes because my brother would watch it constantly. Even the song gives me the chills. Those dudes would put the people into a cocoon and stick straws into the cocoon and drink their blood..
