View Full Version : Do You Like Scary Movies?
BrandonS 05-10-2003, 11:18 AM I love this genre. I don't like really gross "splatter" movies, but I do love a good scare now and then. Here are some good ones that come to mind:
Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein
The Abominable Dr. Phibes
Arachnophobia
Arsenic and Old Lace
Candyman
The Dead Zone
Dracula Has Risen from the Grave
Dr. Phibes Rises Again
The Exorcist
The Faculty
Fright Night
The Haunting
Interview with the Vampire
The Masque of the Red Death
Mothman Prophecies, The
Nightmare on Elm Street (etc.)
Ninth Gate
The Omen
Pit and the Pendulum
Prom Night
Psycho
Salem's Lot
Scream
The Serpent and the Rainbow
Sixth Sense
Vampires (John Carpenter's)
Vertigo
I love the old Brithish films made at Hammer Studios, and most movies with Vincent Price. When I was in college in Cleveland, on Friday and Saturday nights, they would have these "Monster Chiller Horror Theater" type shows that would introduce these horror movies, most of which were so bad that they were good. They were hosted by a small group of people, often in scary costumes, who would do amusing, little skits during the commercial breaks. My friends and I would (after doing our homework, of course) order a pizza, and stay up late and watch them. When I graduated and moved to Pitssburgh, there was a similar show hosted by someone who called himself "Chilly Billy." Again, more funny skits. Since I moved to Florida, there's been nothing like it, and I really miss it.
Swimfan85 05-10-2003, 01:12 PM I like some scary movies, but when it comes to scary movies im more into the sub-catergory of like thrillers and movies like the Sixth Sense
BrandonS 05-10-2003, 01:59 PM One thing that's kind of fun is when some of these movies, like, say, "The Pit and the Pendulum," or "Scream," know that they're a little silly, and sort of play to it, while, ostensibly playing the movie absolutely straight.
~LadyJess~ 05-10-2003, 02:05 PM Yes, but I'm terrible to watch them with. I jump at every little noise and usually have my hands over my eyes or my head covered by a pillow almost the entire movie.
BrandonS 05-10-2003, 02:27 PM My most recent ex-girlfriend was just exactly like that. She'd be completely enthusiastic about watching a scary movie, maybe even suggest it, but after ten minutes, she'd say. "turn it off." I once read Stephen King's "Salem's Lot," because she said she had liked it. I love King and loved the book. Later, she admitted that she had just read 10 or 15 pages, and gotten scared and stopped.
Mijada 05-10-2003, 07:56 PM I don't like the real gory movies. I'm more into suspense movies.
Tuesday Weld 05-10-2003, 09:33 PM I'm not wild about scary movies - a lot of times they are SO unrealistic, that they make me laugh, instead of scaring me.

The Ring was not scary.
Ghost Ship was not scary.

i like the Dead Zone too
I really like most King books and movies too! I thought "The Dead Zone," was excellent - both the book and the movie. That was the first King book I read. I like it when he (Johnny) touches someone and receives images about the person's past and future. IMO the TV show isn't nearly as good, and I don't watch it except once in a great while.
Unwanted Angel 05-14-2003, 01:16 PM I like Gory, Slasher films like Friday The 13th and Sleepaway Camp. But i don't like watching them alone. I am a BIG chicken!
Janice 05-15-2003, 01:13 AM I loved scary movies. I just saw the 4th installment of Wishmaster, and it was scary as hell.

haha! I remember going to see WishMaster ( the first one) and I walked out like 5 minutes after it started.
BrandonS 05-19-2003, 09:12 PM Speaking of scary movies, I've heard some vague hints about a forthcoming horror movie called "Underworld," about werewolves and vampires. The only details I've heard are that it's due out late this year and that Kate Beckinsdale is in the cast. I haven't heard anything else about it, even whether it's supposed to be good or not. I'd appreciate any info. about forthcoming horror films that look like they might be decent.
Unwanted Angel 05-19-2003, 10:24 PM I just got through watching Resident Evil. OMG! talk about freaky. Good thing i didn't watch it alone! :D
BrandonS 05-20-2003, 12:22 AM I saw that in a theater and thought it was kind of average, but still sort of interesting. There certainly was a lot of action. Anyway, I could watch Milla Jovovich all day.

I watched that and just found myself comparing it to the game! It did ok in that respect, but I didn't find it scary.
I do like zombie flicks and basically all monster movies(werewolf, vampire, etc) rather than slasher films. I always figure, why watch a movie about some maniac carving up people with sharp instruments?! All you have to do is watch the news to see that kind of stuff.
Let's see, what are some scary movies that haven't been mentioned?!
Blair Witch Project (I like the fact that this film made you use your imagination to scare the pants off of you.)
The Lost Boys(ok, not really that scary, but it did have vampires in it and it was stylish and had some good humor.)
Razorback (Atmospheric! So what if it was about a giant pig?!)
Carrie (The ending scene in the cemetary haunted me for days)
The Dracula with Jack Palance in the title role. (I can't remember if this was a tv movie or what, I just remember Jack was a scary guy to me when I was little because this was the only thing I knew him from. And he had that creepy, breathy voice of his.)
That's all I can think of right now.
MonarC 06-06-2003, 03:58 PM i like the original "House on Haunted Hill"
even though it looks kind of cheezy it's still cool
JDS84 06-07-2003, 07:26 PM Yes I love scary movies.
BrandonS 06-08-2003, 11:08 PM Here's a good one: "The Thing."
There were two versions of this. It was based on a short story from the 30s, called "Who Goes There?" The author was John W. Campbell Jr., pretty famous in his own right as one of the fathers of modern science fiction. He became the editor for the magazine "Astounding Science Fiction" in the 30s and continued in that post for a long time. He is sometimes considered to have raised the bar for sci-fi by insisting on high standards for the stories "Astounding" ran, discovering such writers as Asimov, Heinlein, and Del Rey, when they were very young.
Anyway, in the 50s, this story of his was made into the movie, "The Thing." The plot is that an Arctic research station discovers a spaceship buried under the ice, that seems to have been there for a very long time. They dig it out and retrieve the body of the lone inhabitant, who seems to be somekind of a humanoid, but derived from the vegetable kingdom, instead of the animal kingdom. To make a long story short, the creature thaws out and tries to kill everybody at the outpost to drink their blood. The creature seems more intelligent than a human, and is certainly physically stronger, but appears to have nothing we would recognize as a sense of right and wrong.
Then, in the early 80s, John Carpenter re-made it, this time with a plot much closer to the Campbell story. In this case, the extraterrestrial is like a super chameleon, able to immitate your best friend and even carry on a conversation with you. Basically, it wants to get close enough to you to absorb you. It's also able to divide itself up into pieces each of which is immitating something different. There's a scene where Kurt Russell has several of his colleagues tied to chairs and fills a petrie dish with a blood sample from each one. He sticks a hot wire into each blood sample, because if any of them is the creature, the blood sample will be a piece of the creature masquerading as blood and will flee the hot wire. Once again, the creature seems to have some sort of intelligence, since it can impersonate your best friend, but communication with it is impossible, because if you try to convince it to cooperate rather than attack, it just ignores you and absorbs you.
These are both very cool, scary movies.
webuster 06-10-2003, 03:12 PM I'm easily shaken- but films like scream that are meaning to be scary don't firghten me like Signs or The Ring would. I keep renting scary films- kind of a love-hate thing- I rented out Jason X (which is ok but stupid) and Dark City (which is good but complicated) and keep looking through horror films. Has anyone seen the movie Freaks?
onefortheroad 07-06-2003, 12:49 PM i love horror movies although im not easily frightened at all. i actually collect them. i own over 200 horror movies.
GrapeJelly 07-06-2003, 01:06 PM Looooove 'em
