View Full Version : I Love Lucy Poll!!! Lisa_Marie_Presley_Fan 05-07-2003, 03:58 PM Would you like Lucy for a mother? Yes No dawsongirl 05-07-2003, 06:09 PM Honestly, no. I'd want a mother whose first priority was not her job, but her family. I think I'll keep my own. LucyFanatic 05-07-2003, 06:12 PM Maybe. Maybe more as a grandmom then anything else. Lolac 05-07-2003, 07:17 PM Did you mean the character "Lucy" or the actress, Lucille Ball. I wouldn't want Lucille Ball for a mother, but "Lucy" of I Love Lucy was a very loving and caring mother. I would love to have "Lucy" for a mother! Lolac LucyFan 05-07-2003, 08:23 PM No, I wouldn't want Lucy Ricardo as my mother. She is too self-centered and selfish. BUT I would want her as a friend or possibly a best friend. JaneTVFan 05-08-2003, 02:37 AM Originally posted by BlairFan101 Would you like Lucy for a mother? HELL NO! Mickey 05-08-2003, 08:32 AM Ricky could be a fun dad though. Singing, dancing, drums - and you'd get to grow up bi-lingual! SPLAIN 05-08-2003, 09:19 AM Considering that her kids grew up in Hollywood in the drug and sex culture, i think she did pretty well as a mother, she left them millions and gave them fame and a start in their careers, maybe if she had been mine, i would have asked them both to seek professional help, and also you must remember that her own mother was always away working so she didn't have the skills or know how to do the job perfectly, then again, who does? I think she would have been a great mother to me or anyone else, find me any person who's perfect and we'll dissect this some more! As for Lucy Ricardo, she had many hang ups, but, when push came to shove, she too would always do the right thing. ~LadyJess~ 05-09-2003, 07:09 PM I don't think I would want Lucille Ball or Lucy Ricardo for my mother. I woulnd't want my parents to be celebrities because then you are usually somehow dragged into the spotlight, especially if your parents are Lucy and Desi. And it seemed like Lucy Ricardo was always leaving Little Ricky with Mrs. Trumbull and I think if Lucy Ricardo was my mother I'd be more mature than her. I think it would be nice to have Ethel as a mother though. dawsongirl 05-09-2003, 10:23 PM Originally posted by ~LadyJess~ And it seemed like Lucy Ricardo was always leaving Little Ricky with Mrs. Trumbull and I think if Lucy Ricardo was my mother I'd be more mature than her. SPLAIN 05-12-2003, 10:13 AM Well, it should not BUG you, you see, it wasn't a REAL family, but a TV comedy show that relied on joke type situations, so the kid was an afterthought, not like in REAL life. .:BF:. 05-12-2003, 11:57 AM not really, but i wouldent mind june cleaver as a mother. SPLAIN 05-12-2003, 03:31 PM June would be a great mother, but not as much fun as Lucy, or even Ethel for that matter, or even Mrs Trumball come to think of it! LucyLova 05-13-2003, 07:33 PM I wouldn't mind having Lucy as a mother, she wasn't as bad as a mother as people would say that she was. SPLAIN 05-14-2003, 09:41 AM It's funny, when they actually asked her that, she prided herself on the FACT that she was a good mother, and a good wife. Never having seen the way it should be as her own mother was working, she didn't have the tools, but she did the best job she could. I think both were great parents, but a little therapy would have helped, but they were different times. Considering they were brought up in Hollywood, they did a great job! Mickey 05-14-2003, 10:44 AM I think we're blurring the line here between Lucy and Lucille. Wasn't the original question would we like Lucy - the fictional character as a mother?! Isn't it sweet how Splain jumps in to defend her every time though?! SPLAIN 05-14-2003, 12:53 PM Doesn't he always have to? So what was the worst thing she did, during the course of the show? Attacking the poor girl in 'The Diet' was pretty bad. SPLAIN 05-20-2003, 10:38 AM You're absolutely right, what a horrible person she was, if only the shows had been all about her doing everything perfectly and leading the perfect life with never a thing going badly, oh that's right, then we wouldn't have watched it, it would have been a reality show instead of a comedy series. LOL! JaneTVFan 05-23-2003, 03:35 AM Originally posted by SPLAIN Considering that her kids grew up in Hollywood in the drug and sex culture, i think she did pretty well as a mother, she left them millions and gave them fame and a start in their careers, I have to disagree with your first point. I think she was irresponsible as a mother. What the hell kind of a mother would allow her thirteen year old to go tour the country unchaperoned with a rock band??? Puleez! OF COURSE Desi Jr. wound up on drugs and screwing girls all over the place! Perhaps if his mother had kept him home and tried to encourage a normal life for a kid that age none of that would ever have happened. Of course Lucy's own mother sent her off to New York City when she was just a kid, so I guess she learned her irresponsible mothering skills from Dede. But let's be honest here, Lucy's background was basically white trash. Did you catch the line in the CBS Lucy movie the other week where Desi's mother is telling him she's concerned that Lucy has "no class"? I think the writers were subtlely trying to make this point about Lucy in the least offensive way possible. But think about it. Her mother, Dede, was out drinking and partying even after she had two kids. Very white trash behavior. Her grandfather liked to play around with a shotgun and even let the neighborhood kids play with it. White trash. Lucy was fooling around with a school principle or someone. Got involved with some kid who was from a family of gangsters, and got pregnant by him a time or two, or so the rumor goes. Then went off to New York at the tender age of 15. A responsible, classy kid would have been home studying and her parents would have been instilling values that would keep her away from shady characters like that bad news DeVita boy. Lucy's behavior at that time was very white trash. As an adult, she's was shacking up with a married man. Later, doing the nasty with Desi even though she was engaged to someone else. What classy person would do that? And what kind of families do you know of where a kid (Desi Jr.) would get two girls pregnant before the age of 18? (Actually, he only got one pregnant, but for years he and everyone else thought he got Patty Duke pregnant with her son Sean, so it's the same difference.) That seems pretty white trash. And Lucy's foul mouth is notorious, worse than a truck driver. Who but white trash people talk that way? And I remember reading that when Lucie got married the first time Lucy had a reception for her in her back yard. And they served the food on paper plates! If they were going to do that, they might as well have just had the reception in a trailer park! I don't mean to pick on Lucy. Lots of white trash people become famous entertainers, Jackie Gleason, Roseanne Barr, Cher, Madonna, and Jennifer Lopez, to name a few. What's amazing, though, is you watch Cher or Madonna or Roseanne Barr or Jennifer Lopez perform and they still seem like white trash. No matter what the do, they can't hide that they're white trash. But watch Lucy on her TV shows and she seems so classy. I guess that's a true testiment to what a great actress she was. JaneTVFan 05-23-2003, 03:43 AM Originally posted by Mickey You know, when you really lay it out like that, JaneTVFan, Lucy sounds horrible! Funny how many people in sit-coms are like that, when you really think about it. So what was the worst thing she did, during the course of the show? Attacking the poor girl in 'The Diet' was pretty bad. If you think about it, she was basically a criminal, albeit a daffy one. There were so many things she did, like assuming false identities, that should have landed her in jail. Actually, she did go to jail about once a year, but it should have gotten thrown in the slammer for the long term given some of the other things she simply got away with. Perhaps she could have shared a cell with Ralph Kramden. Then again, maybe not. They would have had to send her to the women's penitentiary. Mickey 05-23-2003, 03:49 AM Why would she have to have been sent to a women's prison?! :) In 'New Neighbours' they put them all in the same cell! Even just in a holding area that's not supposed to happen, and the place didn't exactly look crowded. Clearly every other criminal in NY was taking a holiday that day. And, rather irrelevantly, but it's just struck me so I'll ask it anyway - where was the graffiti on the cell walls?! SPLAIN 05-23-2003, 11:45 AM Wow, Jane, you never cease to amaze me, i LIVE for your posts, it never gets BORING with you around. Yes, i was kind of shocked myself about Lucy letting Desi jr go tour with a rock band with Dino jr at his age, does that mean Dino and Jeanne were white trash also? The woman who was so hard on those kids and their curfew and their grades and so on let him go out and tour and it came back to bite her in the *** years later with the paternaty suits, so she paid for that error in judgement, to be continued. . . SPLAIN 05-23-2003, 01:02 PM But i guess you answered your own question. Lucy never learned any mothering skills from her own mother who left her two kids on their own while she worked or placed them with relatives. But i wonder why Desi didn't overturn the decision about Desi jr going out on the road, or the stepfather or grandmother, guess they figured if a girl can be on her own at 15, why not a young boy, they weren't exactly alons, i'm sure part of it was that there had to be someone older along with them to watch everything and get back to her if there was any problem. You do pick some harsh words to describe her actions though. Reminds me of when you called her a SLUT for doing what every other actress in Hollywood did back then and still do for that matter, i will accept that word when you convince me that it's different for a man, a man is macho if he's slept around while the woman is a slut if she does the same thing? No, it's a lack of certain morals for both. Maybe Desi jr picked those habits of drinking and carousing from the old man, and not from just being on the road in a band for a few years. Although i remember reading that he said the experience taught him how to hadle money and other responsabilities. SPLAIN 05-23-2003, 01:18 PM And that BIT about the mother saying Lucy had no class in the movie. Well, i think if you define class as treating your wife like garbage while you fool around with every prostitute in the greater Los Angeles area, and drink so much you embarrass yourself at every party and so on, that's CLASS????? The only thing i've ever heard about that woman is that she was a self centered woman who wanted to have everything and never did anything for anyone else, that's classy behavior? Give me unclassy Lucy any day. If giving to charity and helping people your whole life on top of entertaining the world for half a century is not good enough for you, it's good enough for me. I've debated the mothering aspect of her life before, as well as her lack of tact with fellow workers, i will never get to the point of being one of those fans who fawns over her every move, however i just want to point out that she was human and had flaws as we all do. I think when you leave your children millions an a rich legacy, it overshadows the mistakes you might have made in the process. The kids weren't perfect either, but they seem well adjusted anyway. I don't mind discussing any of this, i am a fan, but one that's on the boards so i can get the whole story of her life not just the manufactured crap the network and the studio allowed us to see and hear. I want the COMPLETE story. Amazingly enough i even agree with some things you mentionned. A Hollywood superstar who has a wedding for 200 or more people at her mansion and serves sandwhiches on paper plates could be because she was a very simple woman, not trying to impress the world as so many people do, but also being a little frugal, she did things simply, when i read that same story, i focused on the fact that she had people give some of those trays to the fans on the other side of the wall that day on Roxbury, now that's classy behavior, it's also considerate and caring, give me that over Nancy Reagan type behavior any day! Desi never saw anything wrong in the way he behaved, because that was the world he came from. Maybe you can say the same about Lucy, I don't know enough to comment! Why the emphasis on the white bit? You're right about that. I shouldn't have used that term. The term "white trash" implies that there is a division among white people: some are trash and others are not; and also implies that anyone who isn't white automatically is trash. It's really a racist term and I should expunge it from my vocabulary. I particularly like that story you told about Lucy giving food from Lucie's wedding reception to fans outside the wall. That was a cool thing for her to do. Is this mid twenties child a product from girl friend or it is his current wifes child? Desi jr did have a well publicized life. His sister life hasn't been so focused. I did hear that Lucy wasn't too crazy at first at Lawrence Luckinbill. I imagine someone somewhat chaperoned Desi Dino and Billy on their music career. They were early to mid teens. Where was schooling. or was this a summer time thing. Wasn't there laws. You can't or can you quit school and play music in stadiums across the country. . vze3t9q9 05-24-2003, 08:51 PM Getting back to the question would I want Lucy Ricardo as a mother. No. too scatterbrained. I do think Ricky would have divorce her in a short time. Can you image a having a wife that cause so much trouble. Ricky was alway paying for her mistakes. When i see the series It seems ricky was made of money. Gosh he paid for Fred and Ethel trip out in california and through out Europe. tdr 05-24-2003, 10:30 PM When i see the series It seems ricky was made of money. Gosh he paid for Fred and Ethel trip out in california and through out Europe. The topic of money in I L L is a question I have wanted to bring up, but had never gotten around to it. If Lucy, as she says in one ep, had used up all the household money til 1978 (about 26 years in the future), they really did have a lot of money to have made that possible And then, after his attempted trickery of telling Lucy she had won the new furniture, he buys the old furniture back for $395 that Lucy sold for $75. A $320 loss is equivalent to (?) $1800-2000 (?) now, for which he just wrote a check and that was the end. Of course, he found out it was unnecessary, because Lucy actually did win the furniture. As for having the Mertzes with them in California... I don't know. We do know Fred refused to even pay for half the fuel when they were makin arrangements, and Ricky and Lucy succombed to the idea the "the back seat is gonna be there anyway," and still asked them to come. But [i]nothing was ever said about their living expenses while there in Hollywood. Ricky should not have been such a sucker that he would have paid for their Beverly Palms Hotel room while the studio payed for his and Lucy's suite. And I don't know for sure, but I can't believe MGM would have paid for Fred and Ethel's room just because a Hollywood newcomer wanted to bring a couple of friends along. But declaring that Fred paid for their hotel room for months is entirely out of his character.... but so is their even being there that long, away from their apartment house-- but who cares? [For the record, I think if you are going for a long trip in somebody else's car, you should pay for all the fuel; and even then you come out ahead, since the fuel is not the biggest expense in operating a car.] On the trip to Europe, at least, they do tell of the financial arrangements; that Fred is going as the band manager, and then Ricky suddenly did not have to pay transport for his band because they will play on the ship [what a sudden stroke of luck!] so then Lucy and Ethel can go for the money he will not have to spend afterall. Now, back to the original question. I would not want Lucy (Ricardo) as my mother. Too scatterbrained, too scheming, too selfish, too vain and arrogant. Lucy may be an entertaining character, but I'm glad my mother was the opposite of these qualities. I would also not want Lucille Ball as my mother because I would hate growing up in the spotlight with the press around and being near wild Hollywood life, and not even having a chance to be a normal kid. SPLAIN 05-26-2003, 10:03 AM Getting back to that Lucie wedding and the food served to the fans Jane, you were absolutely right, the neighbors set off their sprinklers to get the mobs of fans off their lawns. Yes, the kids had tutors while they were in the band, of course there are laws about that sort of thing, yes, even in Hollywood! Lucy said the kids were turned on by education with tutors while they did Here's lucy with her also. babalucy 08-13-2003, 09:55 AM Desi Jr and Little Ricky started drinking together when they were young teenagers. Little Ricky was at their house, and Desi Jr saw a bottle of wine on their table, and him and Little Ricky just started drinking it all and got drunk. Then Desi Jr got into drugs, which finally led Little Ricky doing the same thing. (Just wondering where your info's coming from) I don't think you can point to one person for causing your drug and alchol abuse! Besides, I thought it was more Desi trying to emulate Keith. SPLAIN 08-13-2003, 12:59 PM All i remember is Desi jr saying he started drinking at 13, i would think since Keith was like a brother to him and his dad being hooked on drink and those Hollywood homes all being filled with parties and constant drinking were all factors, not to mention Desi jr being out on the road at such a young age and being watched like a hawk at home, he WOULD go crazy outside of it, makes sense! crazyredhead 08-13-2003, 01:22 PM Did you read the book Keith Thibedeax (or however you spell it) wrote? Yes, I've read the book like 10 times. lol literally Lodee 08-13-2003, 01:45 PM Wow, pretty good huh?:) So that's what Keith himself says then? Mkaleek 08-13-2003, 01:49 PM I don't know if I would want Lucy as a mother. It would feel funny being attracted to my mother, or thinking that my mother is gorgeous. I just can't imagine it. Even as she got older, I still couldn't imagine it. Maybe a close friend of the family, or next door neighbor, or a confidant, but I just couldn't imagine her as being my mother. crazyredhead 08-13-2003, 01:50 PM lol yup! MagsLovesLucy 08-13-2003, 02:31 PM I just bought "Life After Lucy" in Jamestown this weekend (and Kieth Thibodeaux signed it for me! ), so I'm glad to hear it's a good book. I've skimmed through it and it seems like a really good read. :D Getting back to the original question, would I want "Lucy" as a mother? Lucy Ricardo always seemed like a loving mother to me, so I wouldn't mind having her for a mother, but I'll just stick to my own mom. I think, like a lot of other people have said, she'd be a fun friend to have around though. SPLAIN 08-13-2003, 02:33 PM Yes, well said, Lucy's the ultimate BEST FRIEND, you want a great mother, look at your own! JaneTVFan 02-03-2008, 07:06 PM I just recently saw on Youtube Madonna's 1994 appearance on David Letterman. I had forgotten about that. She's talking about pissing in the shower and doing NBA players. While I admire her honesty (and Lucy's) the way she was throwing this stuff out, especially the shower stuff, was not exactly classy. I'll give Lucy credit for being above all that. But . . . I have to disagree with your first point. SPLAIN 02-03-2008, 07:17 PM Ok, i'll tackle these one by one. Dolores Arnaz saying Lucy had no class, well, hum, a woman who did absolutely nothing her whole life, expected to be waited on hand and foot her whole life and never did anything of any consequence except look beautiful and marry money, is that CLASS? If so, give me Lucy instead. De De worked at a few jobs to raise her kids and one turned out to be the one of the most important women the world of entertainment ever knew, so she must have done something right. Yes, letting her daughter go to N Y at fifteen was something, but she taught her kids things and thought they could handle themselves. Desi jr travelling the world at 13 was surprising knowing Lucy's penchant for overprotectiveness. But Desi agreed to it too, their friends let their two sons go also, so there must have been some adult supervising them. I think his womanizing and drinking came more from dad anyway, not just from being ON THE ROAD. Mikado 02-03-2008, 08:12 PM I need a "Not sure" option....cause I really dont know! AB 02-04-2008, 05:10 PM ^ Me too! comedyfreak 02-04-2008, 10:42 PM I voted yes, cause it would be an intersting childhood. I'd also be set for life. SPLAIN 02-05-2008, 10:01 AM Lucy Ricardo, YES, and Lucy Ball, even more so! Imean come on, the greatest female icon of all time? Who wouldn't? She was serious about peeing in the shower, which makes me cringe, but to each their own. http://youtube.com/watch?v=cRSP5ZUmxP8 SPLAIN 02-19-2008, 10:34 AM I asked George of Seinfeld for another opinion on peeing in the shower and he saw nothing wrong with it. Brian Damage 02-22-2008, 12:36 AM I have to disagree with your first point. I disagree with your final statement though. I think that Cher, Madonna and the rest don't act like white trash. I'll concede Roseanne, but that's an act. No offense Irene. Jackie Gleason was a class act, while Lucy got drunk and yelled at people in public, like airplanes. I read once that she got so drunk that her wig ended up on her dog and almost smothered it. Ireneparalegal 02-22-2008, 12:48 AM Wow, you're right. They were white trash! You have your views, your opinions and many times you back up what you state with facts. I am not going to get mad or take it personal or even get touchy when someone mentions facts abt the celebs I like. I love Madonna, Cher, Lucy (of course), John Lennon and Roseanne. You all know that. I can get a little testy with my feelings at times but overall, I know it is just people giving their views and sometimes it is FACTUAL. Hey, they are celebs, they aren't perfect. Some are worse than others and believe me, the only perfect celeb in my eyes is JOHN TRAVOLTA. :D  Seriously, I love my Lucy but there are things out there abt her and her family that would make people scratch their heads. We have to learn that on boards like this there are those who like or hate a celeb. It is not what you say, BUT HOW YOU SAY IT. I take no offense Brian  I can't. We may not agree on John Lennon, Roseanne or Lucy, but overall we are adults and have fun on these boards. SPLAIN 02-22-2008, 03:21 PM Yes we do, that's true and we also all know that most of the garbage we read about celebs is made up crap, to sell magazines and tabloids. So when someone makes a ridiculous statement like Lucy was drunk, we know it's someone spreading rumors that were never substantiated and as Jane once said about herself, i'm the same way, i certainly do not see these celebs as Saints, i know they were all human, like all of us. Hey Irene, how about the Travolta gay rumor, how did you react to that? coffield3 02-22-2008, 04:09 PM No, she's way to cool to be a mother type to me, i'd prefer to of had her as a best friend or a sister :) It must of been brill being Ethel  coffield3 02-22-2008, 04:12 PM Did Lucy have any sister's?? Honestly, it was no biggie to me simply because there were too many rumors running rampant abt John and many guy celebs of that time. Besides, I was (and still am) in love with the man, so who cares? Obviously he was a gentleman who wasn't abt being seen in Hollywood with different women on his arms. He had his love, Diana Hyland and when she passed away, John took a long time before he got back into the dating scene. Besides, having a gay daughter, I can only tell you there is nothing wrong with being gay. OH Nuts! 02-24-2008, 10:28 AM No offense taken Brian. We're a diverse group here, and we're not always going to agree. Sometimes people with opposing opinions just have to agree to disagree. And you can also disagree with someone without being disagreeable. It's when someone starts to name call, threaten or insult others...well...that's when the fur starts to fly. Wow, COOL, i feel, the exact same way, good for you to be WITH IT and smart enough to let people live their lives whichever way they want and mind your own business, if only everybody else could be that way, after all, gay people are BORN that way, there is nothing they can do to change that. As for Travolta, he's rich and powerful, seems very nice and is a great actor and performer, so whose business is his personal life but his own? Right? |
