View Full Version : What Books Did You Love and Why?
BrandonS 05-07-2003, 09:35 AM I'll start with a few of mine:
1. Roger Zelazny's Amber series
Great sci-fi series about alternate universes and the few who
can travel among them. Very stirring.
2. David Eddings Belgariad and Mallorean series
Fantasy series set in a world with magic, good and evil gods,
a struggle to restore the rightful heir to the throne. This
genre has rarely been done better.
3. Practically any Mystery by Lawrence Sanders or Stuart Woods
They are so clever. They're among the few writers who totally
rule this genre.

OMG! You love the Fear Street books?! Me too! :D I'd re-read mine if I could find them. I kind of miss the stories you know. I like to re-read books and get re-introduced to them.
My favorite all-time book though is The Virgin Suicides. I get so wrapped up in that book and the movie I love that and the music which is haunting. I can't get that book out of my mind for two seconds. I also enjoyed Girl, Interrupted; Prozac Nation; Of Mice and Men; V.C. Andrews novels, and thats all I could think of at the moment.
Oh yeah and lets not forget my all-time favorite Bewitched book -Bewitched Forever. I love that book and Herbie J. Pilato (the author) signed it for me. :D
Montclave 05-07-2003, 08:50 PM The Bible - For inspiration.
-*Leah*- 05-07-2003, 10:48 PM I read To Kill A Mocking Bird not too long ago, and I really like it.
AnaheimPMWitch 05-07-2003, 11:26 PM I like pretty much any John Grisham

BrandonS 05-08-2003, 12:01 AM If you like John Grisham, you might like two other writers who do courtroom mysteries, Perri O'Shaughnessy and Phillip Margolin.

whoops! my reasons:
Speak: It's funny and sad. It's a page turner
Go Ask Alice: It's a diary of a teen girl, who has a drug problem, it's very interesting!
Harry Potter Books: It's fun to get away from reality once in awhile, and I am really into magic and stuff. It fascinates me...
Ten Little Indians: It's probably the best myster novel! Keeps you guessing til the end...
A Painted House: It's about a little boy who lives on a cotton picking farm, and it's filled with excitement.
~*Hannah_Lee*~ 05-08-2003, 11:23 PM Angela's Ashes- It's a very amazing book. It's almost unbelievable the things this guy goes through, like intense poverty. THe really remarkable thing is the fact that it's all true, though.
Number the Stars- I am not sure why I love this book. I just always have.
WrenCanada 05-09-2003, 06:26 PM The Personality Puzzle by Florence and Marita Littauer
Why? I love the humor and it is so true! I enjoy reading books that enable me to get to know people and different personalities and if anyone, like myself, likes to do the same, this is the book for you! :)
Crimson and Clover 05-09-2003, 06:53 PM the Grapes of Wrath- really good book
Roots
Stupid White Men
To Kill A Mocking Bird- i think that was the only book i liked that was required for school.
The Lovely Bones

Oooh, I love Scooby Doo too! :D
Brian 05-24-2003, 07:48 PM I was just about to start a similar thread until I found this.
Stephen King books
Cujo: The first book I read from this author. I liked it but I wouldn't call it one of his best works
Nightmares and Dreamscapes: One of his best short story compilations IMO.
Skeleton Crew: Also one of his best short story compilations. One of three I have read and liked.
Night Shift: One of my personal favorites and has the same format as SC and N&D.
The Tommyknockers: Long but worth it. Very interesting and unique story.
It: Possibly my favorite King book of all time.
Desperation: I sort of liked it but it left a lot to be desired.
Pet Sematary: This one kept my eyes glued to the book. Powerful.
Michael Crichton
The Andromeda Strain: Very intriguing story.
Sphere: This was the first book I read from this author and I didn't really understand it. I still liked it.
There are a whole lot of other books I would like to read and when I do read them, I'll post my thoughts of them on this thread.

Kristen 05-24-2003, 09:14 PM To Kill a Mockingbird-I love the message. And you have to admire Atticus, for being willing to defend Tom even though he knew it was useless.
The Catcher in the Rye-I'm surprised I'm the first to name this one! I love that you get the feeling that Holden's actually telling you the story.
A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving-One of my all-time fave books. A real tear-jerker, and it also made me think a lot about my faith and stuff.
The Great Gatsby-For some reason I just loved the world of the '20's and Gatsby's weath and his obsession with Daisy LOL I'm a hopless romantic!

I'm very fond of "The Chronicles of Narnia," and I really enjoyed the "Harry Potter" books.
Montana Ponine 05-25-2003, 10:58 AM I enjoy...
Harry Potter series
The Princess Diaries series
Erm....that's all I can think of for now. I'm reading Little Women currently, though. Yay!
Sam Malone 05-25-2003, 12:24 PM The Final Days by Barbara Olson -- discusses the final abuses of power by the Clinton administration;
The No-Spin Zone by Bill O'Reilly -- Bill O'Reilly of FOX News Channel's "The O'Reilly Factor" takes on Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton... and George W. Bush in one-on-one 'spin' interviews;
Now, Let me Tell You What I Really Think by Chris Matthews -- 'Hardball' host Chris Matthews tells the world exactly what he thinks about certain political figures like Clinton, Gore, Bush.... a good read for liberals and conservatives!

Im actually in the middle of book 4 in The Chronicles of Narnia the one called "The Silver Chair" but what annoys me is in different box sets, they're all in different orders. I've read "The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, Prince Caspian, The Voyage of the Dawn Treadar, and now The Silver Chair, but in different box sets, The Magicians Nephew is suppose to be the 1st book......I dont get y some are in different orders....There was a movie over it on the BBC but I didnt see it...

Krisalicious 05-25-2003, 09:13 PM A Walk to Remember by Nicholas Sparks...because it was very well written and followed the journey of a love between two people that you would never think could get together. I like it more than the movie.
Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes...because it follows the transition from a man who is somewhat slow in the mind to a man who is near genius level after an operation.
JDS84 05-25-2003, 09:23 PM The Thread That Runs So True by Jesse Stuart. This is my all time favorite by him. If you have never read his books I recommend that you do cause he was a very talanted writer.

Anyways, I don't usually read for pleasure anymore. I get enough reading at school. I'm currently reading Catcher In the Rye with my english teacher and it isn't too bad of a book.
TelevisionQueen 05-26-2003, 11:47 PM The Pilot's Wife, by Anita Shreve...
I love this book - for all of the obvious reasons - it kept my attention, had characters I could relate with or see in my head, and had an interesting plot. I won't go in to detail, so I won't spoilt it...
I liked it though because I could see EXACTLY who I would have play each character in the book if it ever became a movie.
Anyway, great book, read it sometime!
Unwanted Angel 05-27-2003, 08:06 AM Hehe RL Stine! yes i still re read my RL Stine books all of the time!
Plus i love Romance novels.
Madeline Baker
Elane Barbire
Janelle Taylor
Bobbi Smith
And a whole bunch of other wonderful authers.
My favorite Romance writer is Cassie Edwards! Her books are just so sweet and touching they take my breath away, I feel like i'm in another time and place when i read her books.
*ShortCake* 05-28-2003, 04:16 PM I also liked Of Mice and Men. The ending was so sad though! :( I havent read the Harry Potter books yet. My sister has them though, so maybe I should read them! :)

BrandonS 05-28-2003, 04:39 PM Ashley,
I loved the Harry Potter books and would like to hear your opinion when you do read them.
BubbleLuvGrl026,
The collections of the Narnia books disagree about the order because traditionally "The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe" was considered to be the first, but recently, in going over Lewis' notes, scholars formed the strong belief that he had intended "The Magician's Nephew" to be the first.
*ShortCake* 05-29-2003, 03:35 PM I saw the Harry Potter movie.. LOL I liked it alot, the graphics were pretty cool too!! I downloaded some of the books..a nd am going to read them! BrandonS 05-29-2003, 04:29 PM Me too. I've never even been on Kazaa. I stopped after Napster went away, but from what I've heard, I ought to give it a try. You'll love the Harry Potter books!!!

If you want my opinion, you're reading them in the correct order. The traditional (and right) way to read them is:
Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe
Prince Caspian
Voyage of the Dawn Treader
The Silver Chair
The Horse and His Boy
The Magician's Nephew
The Last Battle
I don't know what's up with putting the Magician's Nephew at the beginning of the set. Chronologically speaking, it is the first in the series, but it is definately not meant to be read first. I can see why the historians are confused: ten to one CS Lewis wrote The Magician's Nephew before The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, but that doesn't matter. The cool thing about reading them in the traditional order is that you get to the Magician's Nephew and you go "Oh! That's why that happened!" and "Oh! That's why that's there!" and "Oh! I get it!" It's such a cool thing to find out the backstory. Keep going in the traditional order - it's better that way! ;) (My aunt's a librarian and this is the one thing we agree on.)
