I think both shows had two nerds that were very annoying- Family Matters had Urkel and the Cosby Show had Vanessa. But if I had to pick one I would have to say Family Matters because this was a family comedy that had revolved more around the kids rather than the adults. On the Cosby Show, the grandparents were on all the time and then you would see the friends of the grandfather-LOL. So Family Matters is my pick. You always knew each episode would revolve around the kids.

Steve Urkel was Family Matters & I greatly enjoyed his antics (primarily in the early seasons) and I even actually ate Urkel-Os once (it was in the discount cart).

I guess it's because of Bill himself. He's so funny! Family Matters went too far over the top. But I did really like Family Matters when it first came on!

I'm not really sure which one I prefer. I only liked The Cosby Show durring season 6 & 7. I also only liked Family Matters before it was all about Urkel. I guess I'll have to say The Cosby Show because it had Olivia and I thought she was hillarious.

I don't like either show, but I'd probably say the Cosby Show. None of the characters were annoying like they were on Family Matters (Laura and Urkel especially.)

What was annoying about Laura? I don't have to ask about Urkel.

I think I like The Cosby Show better, because I thought the show had well written storylines, and I found Bill Cosby and the rest of the cast and crew entertaining, and I think there were many episodes that were filled with laughs. I didn't like Family Matters, because I found Steve Urkel annoying, and I was never really interested in the show.

But i liked how Family Matters included certain holidays in their episodes such as Halloween, Valentine's Day, and Christmas. The Cosby Show never had a Christmas tree in their living room. I don't recall a Halloween or Valentine's day episode on the Cosby show. I could be wrong.

This is tough but I guess i'd have to say "The Cosby Show" but only in the later years. The reason I chose "The Cosby Show" is simple. There's no Urkel.I found Urkel much more annoying than anyone on "The Cosby Show" including Olivia so that's my answer.

I'd say Family Matters. I don't really even find The Cosby Show very funny. I always used to watch Family Matters, too, and it could always make me laugh. And I don't think poor Steve Urkel is annoying! LOL...well, slash that...he IS annoying, but that's what makes him funny. :)

I prefer Family Matters. It is one of my childhood shows that I got into back when it was on TGIF. I absolutely loved the show and I remember that I was always looked forward to it on Fridays. Also, I found the whole show to quit entertaining especially the Urkel character. I love his famous line "Do I do That?". lol
On the other hand . . . The Cosby Show doesn't interest me one bit. I find it to be very boring and the theme song of it is just plain dull and wierd.

Family Matters because it is a MILLION times better and funnier than The Cosby Show.

My answer to this is twofold:
1) I liked The Cosby Show in the first five seasons with the exception of season four. That was a somewhat boring season. The dialogue and the family interaction during those first five seasons was good. After season five when they brought in all those extra people in there especially Olivia. I found the dialogue they gave her was annoying and too adult like. Rudy when she got older I found her annoying as well especially in her interactions with Kenny. When she went there and told him, "You have to earn my love." HELLO!!! What does a child know about earning love.

For the most part I enjoyed the show because it was dealing with the entire family and not one actor/actress dominating the show like other family shows such as Family Ties, Happy Days and The Hogan Family.

2) Family Matters was very good during the first part of the first season. When Urkel came along he shoved aside the entire cast and it became The Urkel Show. I validate Jo Marie Payton's anger in leaving the show. It was a wonder she stayed on as long as she did. Yes Urkel did bring a lot of energy into the show but to just not have him dominate the show was a bit much. It grew to be repetious like Family Ties did when it became the Michael J. Fox sitcom.

Family Matters is a right bobbly dazzler because of the nature of one nerd:

Urkel!

And that's all there is to it.

Besides Cosby is very much oversaturated.

Without Urkel, family Matters would've been nothing more than another unsuccessful Cosby Show ripoff like 1985's Charlie & Company with Flip Wilson & Gladys Knight (which also had Jaleel White).

Hmmmmm.... When they were both on at the same time I liked Family Matters better. Now that they're both off the air, and I'm older I appreciate The Cosby Show's realness.

What realness on the Cosby show? I remember a episode when Denise decided not to return back to college on the first day of the fall semester and tells her parents she wants to stay home, What parents would be ok with that decision in real life? NONE!!!-So it was nothing real abot the cosby show at all.

And who are you, God almighty? Jesus Christ, stop asking people why they like the shows they like and realize that you're not a king around here. He has the right to like whatever sitcoms he wants to.

I agree. I'm sick of jerks like Solomon who can't respect other people's differences.

Solomon's attitude is the reason, I do not answer his threads anymore.

Yes, I still read some of them, because of the other posters who do respond to them.

Um....excuse you, but what's more real??? Parents being supportive of their daughter's decision not to go back to school(The Cosby Show), or being transformed into a stud by stepping into a metal portopotty (Family Matters)???

Good point--Family Matters was ridiculously fake at times. But in the post earlier, a comparison between the shows wasn't being made. He never did say Family Matters WAS realistic. You said Cosby show had realness, and he asked, what realness?

Damn, I should just bite it and stay out of other people's stuff, but I was going to respond to the thread anyways, about my favorite show, so I had to throw in my worthless two cents. Sorry. Okay, here's my favorite: Family Matters. Family Matters really did bother me when Steve started changing into other people. It was bad enough that before he was EVERYWHERE. But I watched that show regularly when it was originally on, which is more than I can say about the Cosby Show. It was just more entertaining to me. And the sheer fact that I used to go around hiking up my pants, saying "Got any cheese?" proves FM ruled. I never went around trying to be Vanessa. Except once, I did have a wig like her hair. But I never once wanted to talk like that girl.

Exactly, i was just saying that the Cosby Show was not a 100% real. No college student can come stairs the morning their parents are taking them back to college and say i don't want to go back because college isn't for me and on top of it Denise had no job and told her parents that she didn't look for a job over the summmer because she was on vacation. And her parents let her stay. I recorded over that episode-it was too ******** for me.

No kidding. And yet again, I have another example of Cliff's weird responses. A couple days ago I posted how he reacted strangely toward Vanessa going to see a concert in Baltimore. When Denise didn't want to go back to school, he was obsessing over Denise thinking he'd get mad. Cliff had some issues. People can think that dialogue in Denise episode was funny, but Cliff had issues. And I did not buy Clair's reaction. She flipped when Sondra didn't go to law school. Yeah, Denise and Sondra are different, but not so different Clair would be cool with one dropping out and not the other.

I don't think Eddie could have told Carl and Harriet he ain't going bck to college. Harriet would have told him-"you are getting out of here"

In the later episodes Cliff's obsesssion with the kids getting out of the house got on my nerves. It was poor handling in the episode when Denise decided the morning that she was suppose to leave for school that she was not going back. HELLO she knew she was not going back in real life there would have been some severe consequences if someone pulled what Denise pulled. The episode when Vanessa lied to her parents and went to a concert in Baltimore was handled very realistically. That was a serious thing for a child to do. From the sixth season until the end the show got too far fetched. Cosby should had pulled the plug at the end of the fifth season.

The episode where Vanessa lied to her parents was handled realistically on Clair's part I thought, but when Cliff first heard the news he acted drugged to me. Cliff tended to not get angry ever because that was just his demenor, but the Vanessa/concert situation was weird. Yes it was a serious thing, and he was just too calm about it. And, I too was annoyed with Cliff's obsession with the kids getting out in the later years. He complained about it, yet, he created that situation for himself. As I remember, he didn't do much to get them to leave. When Sondra and Elvin were pulling that sad story act with their kids in the episode where Cliff is planning to build that additional room, he just stands for it. He starts to tare up the plans and accept that they are going to stay longer. Give me a break.

Yeah the Huxtable house was TOO crowded for me in the early 90's-LOL. I just got up from the chair and put my arms up in the air and said-"this show should be renamed Huxtable Hotel" On the other hand, the Winslow household remained the same not the addition of 5 or 6 relatives.
