View Full Version : Wings Debate Thread
nantucket_wings 04-23-2003, 08:37 PM k this is how it goes ... example: Last nights episode was about Helen and Joes new gf getting together for lunch and ended up trading little trats of Joe, so everyone voice your opinion about that particular episode and so on ... tonights episode is The Late Mrs. Biggins so tomorrows debate will be on that particular episode ... :) ... lets see how far we can go with this thread ... :D
Chocoholic 04-23-2003, 08:46 PM I love the meat-slapping scene. Such a hysterical episode. Great writing, timing, and acting. I know I've said it before, but I'll say it again: Why the hell didn't Wings and any of its cast members ever win an Emmy?
In two nights is one of my favorites, The Bogey Men. "My goat knows the bowling score, Hallelujiah!"
nantucket_wings 04-23-2003, 08:51 PM I love that scene between helen and joe and the fish ... lol
I wonder how red their cheeks got after they got done shooting that scene ... lol ... after a while of getting slapped with fish I would think it would start to hurt a little ... lol
losthighway 04-23-2003, 11:46 PM I absolutely love the Ladies who Lunch episode. It's one of my favorites. The sarcastic barbs between Gail and Helen are great, Crystal's deliveries of the lines are classic.....
Helen: You pig!
Gail: How dare you.
Helen: Oh like that's the first time you've heard that today.
Then of course the dialogue between Helen and Joe is great.....Joe's line, "you wish you were over me, you wish you were ALL over me".....makes me laugh every time. And then it was all released perfectly with the big kiss. And then Joe's reaction to Gail.
Joe: Gail there's a perfectly good explanation for what happened.
Gail: I'm listening.
Joe: Oh, you want to hear it.
Great stuff.....and the secondary plot with Roy and Faye makes me chuckle as well.
Just like Snoopy said, I have no idea why none of the main actors or writers ever won an emmy. This episode was worthy of at least a writers award.

I know! I personally think Wings had far better writing and acting than Friends, Everybody Loves Raymond (Which I do like, but still think it's over-rated.), and other shows that have been nominated for and won Emmys. I don't bother paying attention to awards shows anymore.
losthighway 04-24-2003, 12:39 AM I don't pay much attention to the awards either Snoopy. I think they tend to be driven by agents and advertising campaigns.
It still frustrates me a little because I really think the work of David Schramm, Crystal Bernard, and Steven Weber were definitely worthy of recognition at certain times throughout the run of the show. I'm not sure if they were ever even nominated, which is even worse. And the show definitely should have gotten some emmys for writing.
Chocoholic 04-24-2003, 01:41 AM Maybe that can be another thread here: episodes/scenes where individual cast members really stood out acting-wise.
Anyhoo, tonight's episode "The Late Mrs. Biggins" had some great lines, but wasn't really laugh out loud funny, IMHO. I liked the scenes with Brian and Roy. On a scale of 1 to 10 (1 being unwatchable, 10 being a true classic) I'd give it a 7.
HaskellGirl 04-24-2003, 02:52 AM I didn't think this episode was one of the best, either. I thought the person they hired to play Roy's ex-wife couldn't act one bit. The only part I really liked was Brian's whole speech to Roy, encouraging him to go. It was an interesting look into Brian's psyche.
I wonder if I'm the only one who does this, but lots of times when I'm watching Wings (although not all the time), especially when I see Joe and Brian interacting, I think "I can't believe Brian ran off and married Joe's fiancee". If my sister did that, I don't think I'd be able to forgive her, and I don't think she'd be able to forgive herself. But anyway, I thought Brian's speech indicated how he could do that.
pilotguy 04-24-2003, 07:06 AM I don't know why, but for some reason I just can't seem to get into the episodes that center around Roy and his problems. (I didn't really care for the episode where Roy's son announces that he's gay either).
I tend to think of Roy more as a "background" character....Somebody who watches the interaction of everyone else and then chimes in with a wisecrack (sort of like Louie on "Taxi" or Carla on "Cheers"). His personality just doesn't seem to be able to sustain the focus of an entire episode.
I DID enjoy the one where he was running against Fay for Town Council, but that was more of an "ensemble" episode.
Of course, part of my "ho-hum" attitude towards last night's "The Late Mrs. Biggins" entry could be that it was shown the night after the GREAT "Ladies Who Lunch" episode....which as I said earlier, I consider to be a true (and hilarious) "Wings" CLASSIC!
nantucket_wings 04-24-2003, 08:55 AM I agree last nights episode with Roy and his ex wife wasnt at the top of my wings favorites ... I think maybe it was in part to Roys ex wife having a losey sense of humor ... I also liked brians speach, kindof reminds me of myself sometimes ... :)
nantucket_wings 04-24-2003, 08:58 AM Tonights show is called "The Bogey Men" so tomorrows debate topic will be about that particular episode ... :D ... its one of my all time favorites, but youll have to wait till tomorrow to here all about it ...

pilotguy 04-24-2003, 09:16 AM A thought on last night's episode....
Perhaps the story could have been a little better (and more emotional) if Roy's ex-wife hadn't been so cold and heartless.
Perhaps if she and Roy DID share a laugh or two together, and she displayed SOME sort of affection for him, but then got serious with Sylvia saying, "But Roy, that was a long time ago and I've moved on..."
THAT may have played better than having her stand there like an ice statue!

I agree with you!
Roy is a funny character when he's more of an accessory to the rest of the characters- like how you said wen he's sort of in the background chiming in with a wisecrack.
I find the Roy episodes to be kind of boring (as was last night's episode.)
What I liked about the episode last night was the scenes with Brian. I liked his "ten percenter" speech to Roy, and then he was really funny in Roy's ex-wife's house.

:o)
phoebe7165 04-24-2003, 12:45 PM "Antonio comes to the U.S.A., Hallelujah". Sad, but everytime I see anything on the music "Michael, row the boat ashore", I have to chuckle. Helen-"Michael just keeps rowing that boat ashore but does he get anywhere? NOOOOOOO!!!!!" Too funny!
losthighway 04-24-2003, 01:28 PM There was a better episode with Roy dealing with his ex-wife in season 4 or 5 when Sylvia comes to see Roy and acts like she wants him back, but in reality she is only doing it to get back at her husband, who cheated on her.

I agree. I love Roy, Fay, and Lowell, but I think they're better as supporting characters to Joe, Brian, Helen, and Antonio. I find the Roy-centric and Fay-centric episodes don't interest me as much. The episodes that involve the whole ensemble are my favorites.
nantucket_wings 04-25-2003, 04:31 PM although I fell asleep half way through last nights ' The Bogey Men ' episode ... I would have to say its one of my favorite ones ... Brian and Joe are so cute in it ... ... one of my favorite parts about it is when Roy took his golf club after the smoke alarm and Joe and Brian had to dodge it ... lol
and I laugh everytime when they are all on the plane and lowell tells about how he named every single golf ball of his ...
Adamantium 04-26-2003, 04:38 PM To me, this is when the show was at it's best. From this episode up until some of season seven, "Wings" was at it's greatest. Lowell's half hairdo at the beginning was funny. Plus, I couldn't stand his hair long, so it was a relief to see it short again. This is an episode I remember watching on USA back when it used to be on at 11pm. That was back when Wings was still on NBC. I'm not sure what year exactly, but I was way younger than I am now.
Love, Italian Style is probably in my top twenty list.
Krista2882 04-26-2003, 11:05 PM "Love, Italian Style "-
yeah, that was a good episode last night. Lowell's half-haircut was funny. hehehe.
The best part of the whole episode was Helen... in the HUGE wedding dress, coming out of the office, with that alright-let's-get-this-over-with look on her face, bunching up the dress in her hands so she wouldn't trip over it.. and practically stomping down the aisle. haha that totally had me giggling. hehehe. and what the heck was she wearing on her feet?- they were like, ugly black boots. hahaha. sooo stylin' with a wedding dress.
Helen is my hero! :p hehe

pilotguy 04-26-2003, 11:29 PM One part of that "Marriage" episode that I found very funny was when Antonio was describing how and where he sweated when he became nervous.
Roy was trying to eat (so what ELSE is new?), and when Antonio started describing his sweating habits, Roy stopped eating, turned to Antonio and asked, "Do you MIND?".
Then Antonio looked at Roy and said with a perfectly straight face, "Oh excuse me...I've offended the delicate flower!"
That really cracked me up! (These third season episodes have some HILARIOUS lines in them!).
Chocoholic 04-27-2003, 12:15 AM I think it's a great episode too. The 3rd season is my favorite. Antonio made a wonderful addition to the cast. I wish they had him from the beginning. Sconset Sal was funny, so was the wedding. Helen and Antonio made a cute couple :)
I noticed Helen and Antonio's marriage, Antonio's sweating problem when he's nervous, and his near-deportation came up a couple of times in later epiosdes. Wings had pretty good continuity, IMHO. I like shows like that. It makes them seem a little more realistic.

There's a last season episode where Roy, Antonio, Casey and Fay all think they're gonna die after eating at Helen's lunch counter. During one scene Antonio and Roy confess some stuff they did in the past. Roy admits that he's responsible for almost getting Antonio deported in the Love, Italian Style episode. Aparently, Antonio hurt Roy's feelings.
Chocoholic 04-27-2003, 02:03 AM I liked Divorce, American Style. The scene with Helen, Antonio, Brian, and Lowell all in her bathroom was funny. I thought the last scene was kinda sad. I could really sense that Antonio truly loved Helen, but knew in his heart that she didn't feel the same about him. I've had that happen to me too :crying:
Is that lottery law for real? I really hope not. I think 9/11/01 showed us that we definitely need to be careful about who we let in the country.
Krista2882 04-27-2003, 02:16 PM another very funny episode!
The part when Joe called the woman whose name was on the matchbook, and he and Brian kept slamming the phone mute button to go "OOHHH" when she was talking- that was hilarious. haha.
and the scene in Helen's bathroom. TOO funny!
Kris10m 04-27-2003, 03:29 PM I missed the episode:mad: . I tried so hard to stay awake, but I fell asleep! I hate this time slot!
nantucket_wings 04-27-2003, 05:37 PM I missed it to ... I cant seem to stay up 7 days a week till midnight/1:00 am in the morning to watch Wings, but I still got to see it because I got both parts of Helen and Antonios wedding on tape

pilotguy 04-27-2003, 05:54 PM Here's a suggestion for those of you who keep falling asleep during "Wings" due to it's now-later time slot....
Even if you feel wide-awake and you THINK that you'll stay awake during the show, have the VCR taping it anyway.
That way you'll have "insurance" if you DO fall asleep.
After a few nights of dozing off and only catching partial episodes, I've found that this "taping while watching" method offers me a nice back-up if I can't make it through the whole show.
It has nothing to do with the episode being dull or boring....1 AM is just too darned late for many of us!
nantucket_wings 04-27-2003, 06:28 PM for me I look at the episode guide 1st that way if theres an episode that I did miss, I take a little nap while threes company and the cosby show are on, then wake up to watch wings ... :D

that's what i do every night! I haven't actually fallen asleep during it yet, but i tape it just in case.
plus, taping it is cool because sometimes i feel like watching the episode a second time the next day!
sometimes i do that to keep myself awake while i wait for the new episode to come on- i rewatch the episode from the night before. hehe.
I  my VCR!!

Chocoholic 04-29-2003, 05:16 PM I was so busy typing a term paper last night and lost track of what time t was and missed last night's episode. It was the one when Carlton takes the guys cross-country, wasn't it?
Man, I'd sure like to take the guys cross-country...
nantucket_wings 04-29-2003, 05:29 PM yup ... :)
