The recent uproar with celebrities making anti-war comments, had me thinking. If the US ( for whatever reason ) had to bring back the military draft could they "draft" celebrities.

My cousin says no , they will use their fame and of course money to get themselves out.

I say yes, if they could draft ELVIS, they should have no problem doing the same with the members of Linkin Park or the many of million dollar sports stars who are of draft age.

Of course they could. Celebrities are no different from the rest of us, with the exception of their money. They ARE people too, ya know. I hate many celebrities who have that "I'm holier than thou" attitude who think they are God.

That makes me think of Lisa....*hacks*

I think they would do it just so it would start something...."Ooooh Matt Damon got drafted! RIOT! RIOT! RIOT!"

Sometimes celebrities are treated better, but in some cases, not. That guy Robert Drake got bail for murder, $1.5 Million or something, it's unfair he got bail, but a regular person wouldn't pay that much. They're also critiscised, and when are acused of something, it's guilt till proven innocent, and even afterwards still guilty.

Can they draft women? I'd love to see that Bitch J-Lo get drafted. Though I'm against war, it'd be funny if Susan Sarandon was drafted. If Goldie Hawn got drafted, they could do Banger Sisters 2: Band Bang. Or her co-star from Thelma, then they'd do another film, not a seqel (!) more like Runaway bride's done, with the same stars. Also- draft Michael Moore, Ben affleck and Michael Douglas (is he still young enough? If not jusr Draft Catherine)

A lot of celebs would probably use their money and influence to try to get out of being drafted, but I don't think all of them would succeed.

Nope. But it would be funny to see some of these overly-pampered princesses, the kind that will only eat red M&M's and won't walk to a car, have to do that.

What is the age-limit for the draft, assuming one would happen again?

First off, the celebrity would have to be of draft age which excludes many of the anti-war celebrities, who are mostly above draft age which I believe 32.

I imagine too that if the government wanted to pick-and-choose, they might choose a lot of the more outspoken young celebrities who are against the war.

As for Jennifer Lopez, from what I understand she has already served in the military. Yup, you heard right. She apparently served sometime in the late 80's/early 90's but mind you, this is what I heard on a radio talk show.

If you go back to te draft, and us regular people are being drafted, then celebrities SHOULDN'T be any different, but it would be different. Can you see Ben Afflack in Iraq fighting in the War? Yeah...right. Like that would ever happen. They would definatley use their money to get out of it, although its not fair.

There were quite a few actors who served in WWII. I'm not sure though if they were drafted or if they enlisted on their own.

hate to say this , I know its not fair but celebrities can NOT be drafted.

WW2 and the time Elvis Presley was drafted, well that was in a different era.

I seem to recall rading a book while back on thie history of rock and roll, during the Vietnam days of the 60s the military attempted to draft one of the Monkees. It was either Peter Tork or Micky Dolenz since Davy Jones I assume was, may still be British. Michael Nesmith I believe already served in the Air Force prior to becoming a Monkee.

Anyway, Tork/Dolenz claimed they were the main breadwinner of the family and therefor they could not be drafted. And to my knowledge I dont recall the military attempting to draft a "star" ever since. If you are married and have 4 kids and your family would face financial hardship if you were to be drafted then you can use that to get yourself out. The max. age to be drafted I think its 27.

Women drafted? No they cant, at least right now but I would not be surprised to see that change if we see the return of the draft.
We have witnessed women POWs in the lraq war, and of course women have gone in combat and have easily proved they can do anything men can do so the idea of drafting women would not be too "far out".

another draft story...

I remember my brother telling me a story about Desi Arnaz Jr. and how Lucy used her powers to get him out of the draft. True or not, I dont know. I dont recall reading anything about that in the many of Lucy books out now but then again when I attended the Lucy-Desi festival in Jamestown,NY years ago I heard that both Lucie Arnaz and Desi Jr, through their Desilu TOO , keeps a sharp eye out on things that are published about them and their parents so maybe this piece of Lucy history is "lost" if this indeed did happen. Kinda like the "fight" Lucy had with actress Sandy Dennis back in the middle 60s over the film "the Fox" I remember hearing this on Paul Harvey. When Lucy showed the film "The Fox" at home to little Lucie and Desi. Lucy thought the film was a kiddy Disney flick, instead it was an adult drama about two lesbians. Lucy demanded the film to be stopped and went on to say such films are trash and shouldnt be made and went after Sandy Dennis about her being involved in such filth.

Even though Lucy had many gay friends and spoke in favor of them later on, to this day many gays/lesbians still consider Lucille Ball homophobic.

Sorry to go off topic, back to the draft, YES movie/tv/sports/music stars SHOULD be drafted when the time comes that a draft is needed. But chances are they will get out of it thanks to agents, managers, the studios/team owners, and of course...lots of money.

No its not fair!!

I don't believe it's fair either and celebrities should be drafted but when you think about it, if you found yourself in a boot camp training alongside your {place favorite celebrity here}, wouldn't you think it would be a..... uh, hum..... distraction.

And as for women getting drafted, they've been thinking about it should we ever instate the draft again. In Israel, everyone gets drafted including women with I believe the exception of Hassidics. Perhaps America wants to use that example. Besides, nobody says women have to be on the frontline. Many of them would be serving other roles.

Do I believe women should be drafted? Well, I'll have to honestly ask myself if I believe anyone should be drafted into the army and whether or not that actually goes against our constitutional rights.

27 is the cut off point? Hmmm, I thought it was more like around 32 or 35. 27 seems pretty young to be the cut off age for eligibility.

27 IS young, but a few weeks back the USA Today did a story about this subject and siad how the state of Michigan has the names of all the young men in that state ages 18 thru 26 on file in a computer just in case of a draft. Of course once a man turns 18 he is required by law to sign up for selective service. Now I assume once a man hits 27 his name is deleted, though I am not for sure.

My cousin is in the army and he says its very very difficult for a man 30+ to sign up to join at that age.

One area about this confuses me, men who are married and/or have children, they subject for the draft? I heard yes and no .My aunt , though she supports our troops thinks its a disgrace that the military allowed so many young men to go to Iraq only to end up dying and leaving behind young widows and children. She feels that only single men should be in combat and that those who are married and with kids shouldnt even be in Iraq. Of those killed, only a handful I remember reading in the paper didnt leave behind either a wife/girlfriend/ or child.

There are all those real old colonels and generals in the army. Shouldn't people up to the age of fifty be drafted. Of course old people should have health tests and safer jobs (think about it, all these generals sit in tents while everyone fights) promised. Is the bring back the Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (MASH) then they could all be given jobs there. Hey come to think of it, if MASH does come back, the TV series will probably end of remade, or made an entirely new show: mash: the new generation. Now instead of Klinger wearing flowery dresses its a gucci tank-top with a 4 inch leather skirt. Eeww! I can't Imaine J-Lo serving- "Somebody, anyboy, this sand is getting in my shoes, how do you expect me to walk in heels through all this mud, can't they at least serve something that costs more than $30 a plate at the canteens here? Eww, green makes my butt look big!"
