I can think of a few.

Well, Otis on The Andy Griffith Show was always drunk.

Rob Petrie on The Dick Van Dyke Show was funny when tanked.

Bob Hartley got drunk a few times on The Bob Newhart Show, and it was hilarious.

I recall Flo on The Jeffersons getting sloshed. It was funny.

Barney Fife on The Andy Griffith Show was all the time getting drunk on something. He didn't do it on purpose, he'd just fall into drinking situations.

Archie Bunker- Also got drunk a couple of times, one of the eps was downright hilarious (Archie in the Cellar) and the other one was serious

Mike Stivic- Got drunk a couple of times on All in the Family. Don't mean to be mean to Rob Reiner, but his drunk acting isn't very good, imo. I like Rob, but the drunk acting, just watch it and you'll see what I mean.

Edith Bunker- Got drunk a couple of times.

Aunt Bee on the Andy Griffith Show when she drank that medicine and she was singing "Toot Toot Tootsie Goodbye". The medicine was called "Colonel Harvey's Elixir"

Lionel on the Jeffersons when he was getting ready for his college graduation.

Richie on Happy Days at a college party.

Richie on Happy Days in a very early episode where him and Potsie were at Potsie's uncle Marine party.

Rachel got drunk on FRIENDS and called Ross and told him she was over him...when she really was not.

Chandler got drunk and made out with one of Joey' sisters but could not remember which one.

Ross got drunk and slept with Chloe the copy shop girl...when he and Rachel were "on a break".

Monica got drunk when she was out with the Fake Monica "living it up" and blew off work.

I am very surprised that no one has mentioned Lucy. The Lucy character from various Lucy sitcoms got drunk several of times. There's at least about a dozen of episodes where she got drunk. Most of them were quite funny.

Richie also got drunk when he came back to visit everyone on the episode titled "Welcome Home" (Part 2). He ended up punching Fonzie in the face!

Fred from Sanford and Son was drunk in the episode where he comes home from St. Louis; it was sooo funny. Lamont also got drunk in one episode, but I can't remember which.

I got you all beat...
When it comes to drunk characters, nothing beats "M*A*S*H."
Every character on that show was drunk numerous times.
Even my avatar is drunk!
Arguably some of the best examples of drunk acting ever.

McLean Stevenson and Harry Morgan were hysterical when their characters were stewed.

;)

I'd be mortified if someone beat me to the punch.

I'd have to turn in my martini glass.

Foster Brooks, who portrayed a drunk better than anyone else in show business (IMHO) played the role of "Mr. Sternhagen", who ran the TV station that Mindy McConnell worked at in a couple of the later episodes of Mork and Mindy. Naturally, when the going got tough, Mr. Sterhagen got drunk.

Brooks was so good at portraying a drunk that people often wondered if he really was bombed when he appeared on television (he wasn't), or if it was just an act. He did his best bits on "The Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts".

You're right Jimbo. Foster Brooks played drunk better than anyone. He passed away just over a year ago.
Speaking of Dean Martin, I've often read that his inebriated condition was an act, but I never quite believed that. I think Dean liked his brew...not that there's anything wrong with that. ;)

Jackie Gleason played a very funny drunk--I think the character's name was Reginald Van Gleason III on The Jackie Gleason Show.

Fran Fan

Fran Fine got really drunk and mistakingly ended up in bed with Maxwell Sheffield. At the time he was ill with a cold and when Niles the Butler found out about it, he told C.C. Babcock that he'd taken a "wonderful Jewish remedy" that night.

On another episode of The Nanny, Mr. Sheffield was drunk. He was seriously hung-over and was dreading it when Fran came into the kitchen when she always says "Good Morning, everyone!" since he knew that nasaly voice wasn't going to be good for his headache.

One of the best episodes of Three's Company when Jack was when Jack was intoxicated from taking some very potent relaxation medicine. He was at a party with Janet and made a complete fool of himself. He really wasn't drunk but he sure as heck acted like it!

There's Homer Simpson but he's been drunk so many times, I don't know if it's worth mentioning here!

Ah yes. Reginald Van Gleason was funny.
Everytime he would take a drink, Reggie's reaction to the booze would be accompanied by a sound effect, like the pounding of a kettle drum.
Always cracked me up.

Ernie Kovacks did a similar bit when one of his characters, Percy Dovetonsils took a drink.

Tom Hanks made a guest appearance on Family Ties as Elyse's brother strung out on booze. It was a serious episode...very good.

In an episode of "NewsRadio" Bill McNeal got drunk at work. It wasn't his idea to drink in the office, but Catherine (the co-anchor) tricked him into it. He then did a commercial on the air, again after being tricked by Catherine. Gaziza.

Jimmy James of the same show got drunk probably a couple times, but I remember one episode where he's at a restaurant with Dave and professes his love (in a heterosexual way) for Dave to the people eating. Including Ted Turner.

Giles
Buffy
Spike

I don't know what episodes Giles,Buffy and Spike got drunk.I'll hand that over to a "Buffy" expert.

Curb Your Enthusiasm:
Sammy ("The Corpse Sniffing Dog")
Cheryl ("Krazee Eyez Killah")

I hope I don't get spanked over this (well maybe, I guess it would be depending on who the spanker is but...anyhow...) since this IS the *sitcom* board but....

this isn't exactly a sitcom but does relate to it.

Years ago on Days of Our Loves Robin, played by Derya Ruggles, got drunk and went on to imitate Lucy's vetavitavegimin routine. It was actually pretty funny and I used to have it on tape but no longer, sadly.

Thomas Magnum would get drunk once in awhile. He'd usuallly giggle and then pass out. We'd see him the next day with a hangover. The hangover part was a step forward towards reality TV.

I remember a "Bewitched" episode years ago, where Samantha was drunk.
But, on "Bewitched" they used to drink sometimes in social situations, like dinner partys and stuff. Also, smetimes when Darrin or Larry was upset about something, they would take a drink. The Stevens even had a mini-bar in their living room. But that was typical of suburban couples in the 50s and 60s. Some people even had "cocktail parties". (I heard once that there were a lot of alcoholics living in the suburbs back then, that noone knew about). BTW, I never found the drinking on "Bewitched" funny, and I still don't. I don't mean to sound "Preachy" I don't mind drunk scenes on sitcoms.
It's just that my mother's an alcoholic, and drinking has always bothered me a little. (and yes, I do drink at parties and stuff, in case anyone's wondering!)

I didn't realize that Jim on Taxi had Ozzie Osbourne syndrome. I was never a fan of the show, and I knew, or thought I knew, that Jim was a drunk. I think I've watched the show about 5 times. Thanks for setting the record straight on that Kitt.

Ron Harris playing a mad drunk on Barney Miller was good and quite dramatic, especially when he yelled, "You're looking at one angry n*gg*r. (he said it folks, not me).
A good performance by Ron Glass.

Samantha was only drunk because Serena was- Endora had cast a spell on Sam so she'd feel whatever Serena did. BTW, have you seen this site about the drinking on BW, http://www.harpiesbizarre.com/myths.htm#3 ?
