View Full Version : Before Posting my Tape Trading Website...
garrettgam 03-19-2003, 06:54 PM I just wanted to say, before I post my tape trading website link, that I DO NOT sell videos. And I DO NOT buy them. If I want something, don't contact me saying you will sell me, for example, 4 episodes of Golden Girls for 20 bucks(True Story). Selling and Buying is illegal! That's why if you don't have anything to trade, I offer you an opportunity to buy me something on my "shopping list" in exchange. Things on the "shopping list" include BRAND NEW cds, dvds, vhs videos, or dvd box sets. That way I am not breaking any copyright laws. Just thought I would post this, not just for my benefit, but to let everyone know, who may be selling videos, that it is ILLEGAL. Hope this helps people. And also, don't buy any videos. You can get in just as much trouble. And usually saying the money will be for "work", it won't pass it court. I recently saw that issue on a judge show and it wasn't an accurate excuse.

mashunter18 03-20-2003, 07:27 PM Send me your link Garrett, maybe we can trade again,Ill email you my have list also.
secret_defender 03-20-2003, 08:55 PM Sellers: Don't let this person scare you. They are many people that say the same thing. And each time i find one i ask for them to show me a law that states such a thing but everyone of them fails to do so; i just read the reply this person sent and there wasn't any law that shows it's true.
I have evidence on this page of the Treasure Chest thats shows it's cool to do such a thing: http://secretdefender.sifen7.com/terms.htm
Anyone who would like to show me different evidence are welcome to through a reply here or email me.
garrettgam 03-20-2003, 09:27 PM Umm, why do you think on movies, they have the FBI WARNING? Copyrights are just as effective. You are allowed to copy and tape from tv just as long as you do not sell. I know from personal experience. I had a tape website where I was SELLING videos. A network found the site and threatened prosecution and law suit if I didn't take it off. I am telling you, it isn't STATED as a law but it is illegal. If it wasn't I am sure everyone would think, hey, free money! and they would be copying and selling every day. It is a thing called implied laws. Read about it in the books. It is UNDERSTOOD that copying for SELLING is illegal. If you want to continue, do it at your own risk. Just don't come crying to this board when a network is threatening a law suit.

Once my tape TRADING website is up, I will post it here. I have been busy and haven't finished it yet.
secret_defender 03-22-2003, 12:47 AM Network cannot sue unless they own the rights; they never own them they only to buy usage to air on their station. FBI does handle all copyright. FBI also only handles big cases that gross in profit thousands or more in a months time. In trading and hardly any gross they will do nothing because it isn't worth their time and effort.
The case i have posted and its conclusion: you can tape anything you want to from tv
The other law i have posted states it can be done.
Network leaders and main co-workers do visit ebay and comic conventions where such videos are sold at way higher than my price and nothing is done about it. Such videos get canceled on ebay: yes and no; if you are buddies buddies with them or 1000+ feed they won't do it, also if it was really true that they do cancel then how come if you type 'episodes' as your search you can find pages after pages of such videos; if they did do something about it it only be a few items listed and not pages; there are even dvd rips of movies only in theaters sold there and nothing is done.
I have seen several threats and one just recently to my good friend but i have seen none of them produce any action.
Another evidence not posted: junk stores sell movies that have been released or direct to video on blank tapes and no action is brought under this. These tapes are not hidden they are in plain view for everyone to see. I even sold some at a yard sale before and the shreiff saw it and couldn't care less.
secret_defender 03-22-2003, 01:15 AM I would like to end this by saying this: garrettgam = if you disagree show me and the rest who view these messages something anything to back up your side. So far it is talk and talking of others who threated you at one time but didn't produce any action; i have shown several to my side which can be proven of one if interested would do the research as i have. If you have nothing to show then please drop this quarrel for nothing will benefit from it.
Others: if you have something to show on his side please post it, i'm sure others and myself will review over it and see if what i say is wrong. If it is wrong i will take the time to correct my error in my findings.
I don't mean any disrespect from garrettgam; i am just showing him my findings. This person is welcome to stay at his side even through no evidence as of yet to his side that is his / her decision.
ma932588 03-22-2003, 03:14 AM ...But , has anyone actually traded with Garettgam before? I only ask this because I contacted him (for the second time)last Decenber as he was looking for certain shows . He expressed how he wanted all the tv shows and movies I mentioned to him I had and I would trade him for episodes of Mama's Family. He said he was moving in a few weeks and his tapes were all packed away, but he'd get back to me soon. Just a couple of weeks later, I notices that he still had the same want list recently put up and I wrote to him asking if he was all done moving. He never replied back to me , which makes me question what kind of trader he is. According to his post up here, he says that if you dont have anything to trade, you can buy videos or DVDs for him that he wants , and I assume have them sent to his house in trade. I'm not saying that he shouldn't ask to do it that way, I did the same thing for someone three years ago, and it turned out fine, but I had had dealings with that person before . I'm only questioning the fact that Garett abruptly ended contact with me and that sets off my "beware" radar. So Garett, talk to me buddy. Did you really move ? Here's my emails in case you need to get in contact with me:
paulc1975@yahoo.com
ma932588@hotmail.com
I await your message!
mashunter18 03-22-2003, 09:33 AM But , has anyone actually traded with Garettgam before
I traded with him and it was real good,it was a big trade and he treated me real good on it,good copies and all the stuff you want from a trade.
When I was in high school (early 90's)we used to go to a flea market ,and buy all our music cassette's.It was pretty obviuos that they were"bootleg's".They just had them out in the open for sale.
GrapeJelly 03-22-2003, 09:54 AM Right outside of Macy's Herald Square on 34th Street in NYC, there are bootleg vendors set up in plain sight with tables full of VHS and DVD knock-offs, often of films not yet released on video. There's police strolling all around the entire day and they never stop or even glance their way.
garrettgam 03-22-2003, 11:22 AM All I said was true. I haven't gotten your "recent" email, but I do remember you. During the move my tapes have gotten screwed up and I was trying to go through them all. I am a good trader. I have traded with people before. But this move really screwed my tapes up. You should see them scattered everywhere. My relatives moved them with I was at school and took bad care of them. I will contact you very soon, through the emails in your signature because during the move, I had to get internet access in the new house and I didn't have it for a while and my emails we deleted at hotmail.com, you all know how that is. And secret_defender, I don't know the specific law but all I know is that some network or company contacted me and told me they would sue me if I didn't take it off and that's what I did. All I know is I won't sell my videos ever again so I am sorry if it got into such a crappy discussion. Keep doing what you are doing because I don't know the actual law. But I do know someone contacted me. That's the end of that.

secret_defender 03-22-2003, 12:29 PM Mashunter & Grapejelly: i appreciate your input
Garrett: you are the first that i ever saw when discussing on message boards about subjects such as this to apolize, i appreciate that but in no means that this is a crappy discussion, i think it is a good way to let beginners know what's going in different situtations and places. I believe you about what you say happened but you have to think about this too when such a thing happens: it can be easily be a fake email from a person who's got nothing better else to do than to ruin a good thing. Also if you don't have your address posted how do this person knows who you are therefore cannot do anything cause there is no name or other personal info.
garrettgam 03-22-2003, 12:33 PM Somebody could have faked the email. I actually don't remember what it was. I was pretty young and i just deleted the email quickly and deleted the website. It could have been somebody messing with me. I honestly don't know. But I really am sorry, just that's what happened to me. Oh well, hope to have my site up soon.
Garrett
GrapeJelly 03-22-2003, 01:16 PM I don't think it's anything to be sorry for to try and warn people of what you perceive to be a danger so that nothing bad happens to others. I, for one, appreciate everyone sharing their experiences on both sides of the issue. That's how you learn.
Brian 03-22-2003, 11:14 PM I don't sell episodes of TV shows at any price. I realize that there is nothing that law enforcement can do about bootlegging but I don't sell because I prefer to get other TV shows in return. It wouldn't do any good to profit from selling shows over the mail because I would have to pay for sending the tapes, which would cancel out the extra money I would make. I prefer to get stufff I don't have than to get money. Also I don't buy episodes of TV shows, either. That is because there are some crooked people out there that can rip you off. Some guy cheated numerous people on these boards and posted under several aliases to cover his tracks. He was banned. I'm sure there are honest sellers but I am not taking any chances.
Sam Malone 03-23-2003, 11:03 PM I am an honest seller. I try my best to be as prompt as possible, especially with paying customers. I feel it is important for everyone to be satisfied, and by trading, buying and selling, I try to do that. Also, buying helps people starting out trading. It did with me, at least. With my $30 investment, I got an entire series which I turned around and got another almost-complete series. Money gets you places! If it weren't for the $30 I invested in May 2002, I wouldn't be here trading with over 100 different series today; I would still have 3.
Although selling can be a bad thing in some cases, it can be a good thing too. I guess that's the same way with everything in life. I do not like to see, though, people who sell shows for $40+ for a two-hour tape! I just charge enough to keep myself afloat. It costs money to make the tapes, package them, and ship them.
Just my two cents.
Eric
TVJunkie101 03-25-2003, 05:36 PM I've slowly gotten out of the tape trading world, lol, because my tapes are in such disarray, and my schedule just doesn't permit barely any time to copy tapes for others, but...
I've been trading for over a year now, haven't been ripped off once (thank god). I normally stick with the same people, but you just have to take your chances. Play hardball. If someone has a damn good reputation, and asks you to send first, I just did that, and it was fine. But I do suggest sending at the same time, you know, same week, etc.
I do not suggest selling actual movies you buy. Sure, copying them and maybe giving them to a relative or something, that's cool, but I would never send someone a movie they could easily buy in the store. I just don't, and won't.
If someone absolutely wants to buy a tape from me (of TV shows or made for TV movies), I only charge $4 or $5 bucks tops. Not $10 like some people, or even $15. That's far too pricey. Usually, the 4/5 bucks would go to buying the tape, shipping, etc. I make no profit, oh sure, maybe 50 cents, lol, but I, like BJL, just prefer to trade for other shows.
