On the T.V. Land Awards tonight, in case you weren't watching :p, Dick Van Dyke was asked to sing the lyrics that Maury Amsterdam wrote for the theme music . I couldn't catch them all but here is what I got.

If you think that you have trouble
well trouble's, a bubble
so just tell that trouble to get lost.

(Don't know the second)

(Don't know the third)

A smile,
is just a frown that's turned upside down
so smile and that frown will get lost.

And don't forget to keep your fingers crossed.

Did anyone else get the rest and does anyone know if an original version of the theme music with the lyrics sung exists? Thanks and good night!

I thought that was amazing. I thought the whole awards show was done perfectly. I did not care for the dancers though, they could have disregarded them all together. But, I loved how they recognized Dick Van Dyke. I know I do not really post here, but I will try to more often ( if you guys will let me ;). Rose Marie was sweet when she said that her award was for Maury. It made me get a little teary-eyed. Hope to get to know you all soon!

:welcome: to the board, Shortcake! I agree about the awards. (Although, I would've liked for "Mary Tyler Moore" to win! ;) ) Mary looked overjoyed to be there! And Carl's mentioning that reunion thing makes it all the more promising. It broke my heart to see Rose Marie needing help up the stairs. I tend to "freeze" people at a certain age when they're on a show like this, so it's a little shocking when you realize they're not that age anymore!

PS-Shortcake, I love the quote in your sig!

As anyone who is familiar with live musical performances knows, lyrics can change here or there, depending on the performer(s).
I have not viewd my tape of The TV Land Awards yet, but I do have the lyrics as sung by Dick for "A Celebration Of Television Music," live, at the Hollywood Bowl, August 26, 2001.

THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW THEME SONG
Music by Earle Hagen
Lyrics by Morey Amsterdam

"So you think that you've got trouble?
Well, trouble's a bubble,
So tell old Mr. Trouble to get lost.

Why not hold your head up high and,
Stop cryin', start tryin',
And don't forget to keep your fingers crossed.

When you find the joy of livin'
Is lovin' and givin'
You'll be there when the winning dice are tossed.

A smile is just a frown that's turned upside down,
So smile, and that frown will defrost.
And don't forget to keep your fingers crossed!"

I didn't catch the first airing of the show, but I heard the Jump The Shark guy on Howard Stern describing it as a "train wreck" so I didn't know what to expect.

When I finally saw it last night, I, too, was pleasantly surprised. There was a certain amount of kitschiness, but not as much as there could have been. And while it's true Father Time waits for no one, the majority of the honorees have held up pretty well. The best part for me, of course, was the reuinion of the DVD cast. Rose Marie cracked me up with her comment, "I was a young girl when this show started"-- meaning the TVL special.

I can imagine. We only see the edited result, not the hours those patient folks have to sit through in taping. Also was a nice touch, her recognizing Morey Amsterdam's contribution. Carl Reiner seemed momentarily befuddled by the ovation he got, but did get into the spirit of the moment as his speech progressed. MTM looked great.

A train wreck? I'm as honest as they come and I think this award show was far from a train wreck. I'll admit that John Ritter is terribly annoying and I could have done without that salute to the fictional fashion designer, but other than that, I thought it was very enjoyable.

Well said MTM1Fan! As I said before, some shows *Cough*TMTMS*Cough* were overlooked, but what we did get was good. And John Ritter....well let's just say he wasn't my first choice for host!

Overall, I'd say the show was very good, but admittedly, some of that is my just being so darned glad they actually did it! I mean, finally, an awards show for classic TV shows, with a tribute to TDVDS!
I didn't care for some of the "cornyness," like the fashion segment either, but as much as I HATE to disagree with Kristen, I thought John Ritter was great (sorry)!
Shortcake, I'm lookinng at the dancers, and trying to figure out what it was that you didn't like about them. I can't come up with a single thing! I'll keep looking, though.

I enjoyed the tv land awards and particularly when the DVD show got the legend award and everyone got on stage. My favorite part was when Dick sang the lyrics as written by Morey Amsterdam. I thought everyone was very gracious in there comments--Dick, as usual acknowledging Carl Reiner and keeping the attention off himself, Rose Marie was both funny "I was a young girl when this show started" and gracious when she said, "This award is for you--Morey." Larry was nice and respectful and helped Rose Marie up the steps. Carl was funny. the only kind of sour note for me was Mary!! At the moment of the DVD show legend award she felt she had to somehow turn the attention to her own show in her own brief remarks. She thanks Ed Asner, Cloris Leachman, and Valerie Harper. To me it was like saying, "yeah I was on the DVD show, but then I went on to do the MTM show--so big deal." Not one word about Carl or Dick or the show. I think she could have been more gracious, afterall the MTM show will no doubt get this award in the year to come and then she could thank those associated with that show. I'm sure she was trying to be funny, but it kind of fell flat.

You know, Buddy Love, I agree with you about Mary Tyler Moore. I thought it was weird when she did that also. Kind of a slap in the face to the people who made her a star. All in all, though, I loved the show, especially the Legend Award segment. Lolac

OMG, I forgot to mention that in my first reply, Mary Tyler Moore thanking the MTM show cast. That was strange, as if she needed to remind everyone she had a successful sitcom afterward. But she did seem a little embarrassed once she'd said the words. It was kind of a Don Rickles line, which ya gotta have his kind of cojones to deliver successfully... But it's funny how Dick Van Dyke, who has now had a successful series for the last several years, rather than 30 years ago, didn't see the need to call attention to that. Hmm.

Dick is and always has been a class act. Mary is too. I think it was meant to be a joke that didn't quite turnout. Still I agree it was awkward. Though I liked the way Mary had her arm around Rose Marie on stage because it is no secret that they were not the best of friends. Never enemies but there was a lack of warmth between them. Rose Marie writes of this in her new book. I think it had to do more with Rose and Morey working so much with Dick and not as much with Mary. Plus Rosie was when the show began the female lead but later as Mary's popularity grew that changed. Afterall the credits always had Rose Marie's name second and Mary's last (even after Larry Matthews!!).

I find myself agreeing that Mary's "joke" seemed misplaced, if that's what it was. Sometimes that happens. I don't want to think that she was intentionally tooting her own horn of success, but then sometimes that happens too! Maybe in days to come, she'll comment about it, then we'll all know.

Sorry, but I caught this thread a little late so I may be restating points already made by others. (And I'm too tired and lazy right now to go back to the beginning. )

I agree that Mary's comment about Ed, Valerie and Cloris seemed, ill-timed. However, I never heard Mary actually "thank" them; I believe the comment was that she simply wished they (Ed, Valerie and Cloris) were there with her. Either way, had she first acknowledged TDVDS, anything she said thereafter would've been more palatable.

On a more general subject, I agree with Carl Reiner -- this awards show was "weird"! There were some enjoyable moments, but overall it seemed rather amateurish and uncoordinated. John Ritter was OK, although I thought he was funnier in the promos for the show than he was in the show itself.

yes you are correct I checked my tape and it is true that she didn't thank them but wished they were there. I agree too that it was different, "the twilight zone of award shows", but it was fun too.

I wonder where the actress who played Millie was? I know she is alive (I'm pretty sure) and she has continued to act. She appeared on the show more than Larry Matthews and it would have been great if she had been on the stage too with the rest of the cast. Maybe she couldn't make it?

They probably didn't think to invite her because she wasn't considered a regular (which is strange because she was probably on the show more than Ritchie).

I really liked the show and was
very surprised it was so lavish.
I didn't know what to expect.
John Ritter was a good choice,
but he sometimes has that goofy,
silly side that celebrities get
rewarded for too long. Rose's
joke was great because it nicely
took the edge off thoughts about
her frail health. But Mary's
comment was slightly awkward
and I wish she didn't always
seem to think of the Van Dyke
show as a prelude to her true
success of having her own show.
Just as her "happy childhood"
and growing up period. Because
I still think it was where she
did her most consistently great
work. I just wish she thought of
them as equal. And it was nice to
see that standing ovation for
Carl.

I too thought Mary and Gavin both went out of their way to kinda ignore the shows they were winning awards for (DVDS & Love Boat, respectively) to fawn over the cast of the MTMS. I thought it was even more than awkward but I'd stop short of calling it classless. I think Samme summed it up well in his post I quoted above. BTW, I don't think it was meant to be any type of joke.

As for the awards show in general, I thought it was ok, but I wasn't overly impressed. I too thought the dancers were unnecessary and out of place with this type of awards show.

I won't get into the Rob Reiner scene. Suffice to say I thought that was out of line as well.
