McGive this, was a joke Mick! Did you know that Mad About you also had some Lucy references Mick? One time Reiser is sleeping and his wife hears him saying Oh, Mr Mooney! Yeah, i find it hard to understand why we watch the chopped up versions of the shows on TV when we have the DVD's, then again, all we have so far are the weak ones from season one. When we have the whole six seasons, we can tell them all where to go!

Mickey
08-28-2003, 03:05 PM
Well let's be honest, almost every sitcom since the fifties has had a Lucy reference somewhere! How many times has somebody done the "Lucy, I'm home!" or "You've got some splaining to do" lines? :)

I haven't heard any Lucy references in Mad About You, but I've only seen the first two seasons so far. It was never screened in the UK, so I'm just watching it as they come out on DVD. I can't help thinking, though, going by the guest stars, that she'd have done it as well if she'd lived long enough.

Yes but that was much later Ash, he hasn't gotten that far yet, Carol beautifully played her mom later on in the series, i LOVE that show and also got the first two seasons on DVD. In one of the later ones, or middle ones, he produces a show on old time TV and mentions Little Ricky.

Oh so it's Carol Burnett who played the mother! I've heard great things about the character, certainly. I know Carol Burnett (does spelling her name wrongly annoy you by any chance, Splain?!) used to have her own show which was very successful - a few episodes made it over here in peculiar slots in the schedules, and she's very funny. Surely it doesn't matter to new fans if they keep going back and showing the early ones again - because if they're new fans they'll never have seen them! I take your point though. Here in the UK the BBC bought the rights to The Simpsons, everything up to the most recent series. All they ever show, though, are the same few episodes from the middle era. I hardly ever watch the programme, and I've seen some episodes two or three times! The fans are furious.

So it's not just a TV Land thing!

That's another thing that annoys me. I just wish they could give the show a better timeslot in the first place. Even 10:00pm would be better than 11pm, but having ILL on at 9pm was the ideal time, to me. I could watch it every night and not be a zombie in school the next day.

:) 11pm is the British TV schedulers' friend. It must be. They buy all these superior American TV shows, and stick them on at 11pm and later. Infuriates the hell out of everybody, but they keep on doing it. C4 did it with The West Wing, which was so popular, and so critically acclaimed - and so popular with British politicians! - that questions were raised in seriously high places about the scheduling - so C4 gave it a prime time slot. Hurray, shouted everybody... until three weeks later when they shifted it to midnight. Sigh.

BBC2 bought Seinfeld, put it on at midnight, said 'Odd, nobody's watching', and so stuck it on even later. ITV did the same with Highlander and Nash Bridges. Daft.

I know what you mean. Having I Love Lucy at 9:00 in the evening was the perfect time for that show. I remember way back when it was on at 9:00pm like for four straight years (1994-1997) on Nick at Nite. I Love Lucy was definitely in it's 2nd prime in the mid 90's.

I don't know if you are aware of it or not but I Love Lucy now airs at 4:00 in the morning. Ever since the September schedule went into effect I Love Lucy has aired three times daily (instead of two). With that said, the episode that airs at 11:00 in the evening airs again at 4:00am thus leaving a second episode to air at 11:00am in the morning.

Here's an example:
Monday
4:00 AM Episode #1
11:00 AM Episode #2
11:00 PM Episode #3

Tuesday
4:00 AM Episode #3 (repeat)
11:00 AM Episode #4
11:00 PM Episode #5

Wednesday
4:00 AM Episode #5 (repeat)
11:00 AM Episode #6
11:00 PM Episode #7

Thursday
4:00 AM Episode #7 (repeat)
11:00 AM Episode #8
11:00 PM Episode #9

Friday
4:00 AM Episode #9 (repeat)
11:00 AM Episode #10
11:00 PM Episode #11

Get it how the scheduling the works now? It is really quite simple if you look how TV Land sets it up. I hope this information has helped some.

You're so smart, they make it so complicated when you have too many things attached to your set, so much so that if i want to tape something when i'm not there, i put in a blank tape and push record, even if it's only on hours from when i start, if i leave the house i mean!

Lodee
09-07-2003, 09:52 PM
I do that sometimes too if I'm in a hurry. I hate having to find it on the tape when I get home though. I think setting the timer is easier than linking 2 vcr's together to tape though and you can do that, so I think you're smarter than you let on!;)

Well, i did need a refresher course when i got on these sites and started making copies of my old stuff for people! It's very simple really. You play the one casette in VCR 1, and record in VCR 2. The cable or satellite goes IN and comes OUT to the converter or terminal, IN the Converter or terminal, OUT to the second VCR, IN to the VCR, OUT to the TV, IN to the TV. As long as you follow those steps you can't go wrong, the VCR that PLAYS has to have the connections in it, the one that records has only the IN, and out to the TV. Last night i copied a six hour tape and had the second TV off so i thought i might have goofed, but it taped the whole thing, you certainly don't need a second TV in any way.

That's more steps than it takes to set the timer!!

SPLAIN
09-09-2003, 11:26 AM
Well to tape with just a tv and a vcr or two is easy, the complicated part is when you add converters and satellite terminals and DVD's, and big screen TV's that HAVE built in converters, and hindreds of channels and cable, nothing is easy anymore, is it?

I was cracking up during the first half. Lucy was calling Ethel on the phone and Ethel was standing right there. Lucy said something like *Oh, hi, Ethel, ...gotta go...Ethel just came in..." and then Lucy does one of her famous shocked out of her mind yells...... Ethel was reading little parts of a book to get husbands to pay more attention to their wives. One of the ways was for the wife to dress up to the hilt while at the breakfast table. Ricky wouldn't pay any attention to her and then she set his newspaper on fire.

Actually, TV Land skipped to episode #2 (technically episode #3). The reason why I think they skipped the first and last episodes of the series is because they have already been played within the previous nine months. I recall episodes #1 & #179 playing on their "Last Things Last"/ "First Things First" 2-day marathon (December 31st, 2002 & January 1st, 2003).

If you want to get technical, TV Land just aired the FIRST episode ("Lucy Thinks Ricky Is Trying To Murder Her") in the current rotation about three weeks ago under episode number #4. I know, TV Land's listing of the ILL episodes is so screwed up. [TV Land airs the episode according by airdate order.]

I personally prefer the order Nick at Nite aired them in.

Yes. It's under Special Footage, and apparently went out as a tag to the last episode of S1. It shows Lucy and Ricky (or possibly Lucy and Desi) sayig what'll be on whilst they're away, and that we should all go smoke some Philip Morris in the meantime! Not seen since June 9th 1952. Now see, if ILL was a British show, that would have been deleted years ago. Nice to see such things still remaining in the vaults, but I wish they'd had a different sponsor!

No Splain, not married to the store owner! It often happens when R1 disks are sold by British outlets. In order to get the disks to the stores over here in time for the release date, they get shipped early, and mail order stores don't bother having them hanging around until the day they're supposed to release them - so very often they just mail them out straight away! :)

Whoa whoa whoa, let's not go that far. Her two series were no where near as good as "I Love Lucy". Without Desi, Desilu itself plummeted straight into oblivion. I was reading "Desilu: The Lucille Ball-Desi Arnaz Story", and everyone who was there at the time agreed that when Desi left, everything started to go downhill. When he stopped producing "The Lucy Show", the scripts weren't as good. Desi was "ONE" of the main driving forces behind Lucy's career, she even said it herself. Actual facts.

Actually, Desilu Studios started to go downhill when Desi's drinking got in the way of him running it properly. Lucy's the one that saved it. And as far as her two later shows not being as good, I don't know if you know this, but "The Lucy Show" was never out of the top 10 in ratings, and "Here's Lucy" did pretty well too. It's not just Desi that made "I Love Lucy" what it is today, there were multiple people that should be credited for the sucess of it (Jess Oppenheimer, Karl Freund, Madelyn & the three Bob's, Dan Cahn, Viv, Bill........). And the scripts weren't as good when, Madelyn Pugh and Bob Caroll Jr. left, not Desi. I have nothing against Desi, and I totally agree that he did build up Desilu, and he helped "I Love Lucy" be as good as it is today, but you can't say that everything went downhill once he left, because that's not entirely true.

SPLAIN
09-29-2003, 10:28 AM
Yes, very well said Amber, the studio died when the boss devoted himself to the bottle instead of running things, and Lucy grudgingly took over to save it so she could later sell it and get her money back. She bought his HALF for 2 and a half million, but five years later sold the whole package for 17 million, that's SAVING IT! As for her shows, as long as they featured the Queen of comedy, they succeeded, she was in the top ten for 11 of the next twelve years, the last year of Here's lucy being the only one where she left the top. Desi helped her in the beginning, no argument there, but as Desi said himself, she needed help from nobody to stay on top, she was the most gifted comic actress then and still has that title now. While i agree with Mickey that we joke about things and love to get the other one started, we all know his contributions and also accept the fact that even though people keep repeating that the later shows can't compare to the original, actually, when you view all of them, which people can't do now as they are not so readily available, you find out that as Desi said at the Kennedy Center induction of Lucy, in words he wrote before he died, Lucy WAS all 500 shows, people tuned in to see the comic genius of Lucy, the Chaplin of TV as many critics have pointed out, but Lucy could not have done those shows without reactions from her supporting players and she was smart enough to surround herself with the best ones around!

Mkaleek
09-30-2003, 02:29 AM
Well, it's all of you guys opinions against everyone who helped build Desilu's facts. Everyone who was there at the time actually said that the studio basically died after Desi left. The were quoted for goodness sakes! No one is taking away from Lucy or from Desi, but lets just respect the facts. "The Lucy Show", yes it never left the top ten, but I can name a dozen other shows that stayed there also, and "Here's Lucy" is actually the same story, whereas "I Love Lucy" basically never left the top 3 or 2! The FACT is, quoted from people who were actually there, the scripts just weren't as good as they were when Desi had a hand in it. They were a team, and yes Lucy is the greatest comedienne to ever live, trust me I agree, but Desi was her rock, her straight-man. Without him, she just wasn't as good, Desilu just wasn't as innovative. Yeah, "Here's Lucy" and "The Lucy Show" was big because it was funny and of course because of Lucy, but to say you can compare the magnitude of her career with Desi as opposed to without him is just plain nonsense. Comparing her career in the fifty's as opposed to the sixty's? Come on guys, let's get real here. We cannot make the mistake of mixing facts with opinions, so let's just state hard facts...please.

SPLAIN
09-30-2003, 09:31 AM
Lucy was just as good without Desi because she needed nobody to be the best there is. I don't know where you're getting your facts, but the studio died BEFORE he left, the other heads of the studio asked her to take over to save it and he was bringing it all down like he did with everything his whole life. I'll quote Desi here, whatever he built up, he had to tear down, it was in his nature, he said this himself to her, and she repeated it, i'm not arguing here, let's just have a healthy debate.

Mkaleek
09-30-2003, 01:47 PM
If Lucy was just as good with Desi as she was without him, then her following two shows would have been just as popular as "I Love Lucy". I'm getting my facts from the book "Desilu", and almost everyone in there quoted one way or another that Lucy was is the greatest comediennne, but she just wasn't as good as she was with Desi., and that goes for the company also. Hey, I mean, I'm not playing favorites, everyone loves Lucy, I'm included, but she just didn't do it all by herself. She couldn't. No one could, and I really am going by cold-hard facts.

SPLAIN
09-30-2003, 02:16 PM
You know a lot of people criticize that book, Desilu, but i think it's one of the best, but i've also read every other Lucy book and i stand by what i said. Was Archie Bunker's place as good as All in the Family, no, it's impossible to keep something great forever, even I Love Lucy's last shows were stinkers, but back then they did almost 35 a year, so after 180 they were all out of predicaments for her to get into, so in the other two shows, they sometimes repeated the same stories. I once read that in all dramas, there were only like eight basic plots, that they retool all the time, well comedy is the same, there are only so many situations she can get herself into, that will produce a riot. So when she covered Uncle Harry in goo for the tenth time it wasn't as funny, but she never stopped beiung funny and became an icon because people LOVED her regardless of how funny the shows were, they wanted to see Lucy and they also wanted her to NEVER CHANGE, which prompts that other theory that hte Lucy 50th anniversary special was shown three times to huge ratings BECAUSE after Sept 11th, people needed reassuring that things were the same as before and we weren't doomed. As for the studio, Desi could not make any decisions after ten AM because of his drinking and they all came to her to have her take over because the place was finished, and she did. And you know i've read all those nasty threads about her parenting skills and we all know she HATED running that place, she was a performer, not a CEO, but when they asked her, a very frugal woman to take her 600 thousand dollars, that she got every year, under the table to keep her at CBS and they told her she would save the company by using HER money to finance Star Trek and Mission Impossible, she said yes to help out the thousands of employees at Desilu, and it saved the company, which proves that hard work and hard decisions can save a company, Desi started it, yes, was a genius business man, yes, but his thrill of running it dissapeared and he became ill and it practically killed him in the end, ever read A BOOK? In it he says quite clearly how it all came to a halt, competing with other companies for shows, look at reruns today and you'll see the names like Four Star and Screen Gems and others. I'm not debating his skills, but he did let it all evaporate, as was his custom.

SPLAIN

I forgot an important point, she bought him out, but they told her to sell it, she would have to rebuild it first as the only show they had on was HERS. And nobody, but nobody could help her career or present her better than HE did, now there was his genius, she should have kept him on as her manager instead of the other guy she happened to be married to. AND as has been pointed out by Desi's always defending daughter, she called him for advice on every decision she made at the company, and in her life for the rest of HIS life. So he helped her there also. But she had it easier, she LIVED to work, he wanted to retire and enjoy life, admit it, both had good arguments on that subject!

I'm not trying to fight with you or anything, just a little peaceful debate, but I have to disagree with you. "I Love Lucy" is Lucy's most well known show, but it's Lucille Ball's face that has been seen by more people than anyone who ever lived. If she had stayed away from the public eye after ILL, she would be no where near as popular as she is today. Her other two shows were as popular as "I Love Lucy," when the were on the air, but now that they're in syndication they're kind of lost in the shadow of ILL, which is a shame because they're excellent shows. And Desilu was more sucessful once Lucy became president, than when Desi was because his constant drinking got in the way. You've said that Desilu went downhill when Desi left, but some of the most well known shows were made after he left (Star Trek, Mission Impossible, Mannix...). Sorry to be like this, it's just that I don't really like people to think that Lucy's only accomplishment was I Love Lucy, and that she never did anything important before or after that, because she certainly did. :)

BTW, that was very well said Claude!!

But how do you know there would have been a Lucy Show or Here's Lucy if there wasn't a Desi or I Love Lucy. Many times Lucy came to Desi for help, she called him every week asking for advice. I doubt without his business savvy she would have made it with a studio by herself. And I'm notreally sure about that statement about everything was better when he left..because he was president during I Love Lucy, and I Love Lucy beats all! lol!
I didn't say I Love Lucy was her only accomplishment, because it certainly was not. But I mean, I Love Lucy started it all. Lucille Ball even said herfelf that she kept the A-R combination in all her names because when she became an Arnaz, that's when she really hit it big. Now you can't argue with Lucy can you? :)

I agree with you there, Desi did help to make "I Love Lucy" the great sucess that it is today. All I was saying is that her other shows were still great, even without Desi, and the studio did well without him too, because the pressures of running that studio led him to drink, which ended up almost leading to the demise of it. Lucy saved it by buying it and helping to put on some of the best (?) shows. And I think that even if Lucy hadn't married Desi, there would still be a TLS and HL, because there would have been a tv series called "My Favorite Husband," which would have probably been great too, because Jess, Madelyn, and Bob would all be involved in it, just like they were on the radio show. That's just saying "if" though. I'm glad that everything worked out the way it did, because I Love Lucy definitely revolutionized television (and Desi did have a hand in that! lol)

Hey Amber, lets not forget that I'm one of the biggest Lucy fans ever!!! I would never in my entire existence try and take any credit away from Lucy, I just don't like when people try and take credit away from Desi. It's like he still dosen't get the full credit he deserves, before AND after he died. He was integral. He was a genious. Everyone of every generation following the early 1950's already know that Lucy was a genious, BUT SO WAS DESI. Thats my point.
P.S. Splain, I couldn't agree with you more about how they both needed a FISAKIATRIST!!

Isn't it strange though that the audience subdued it's laughter as they were afraid she'd fall off that ledge, people really DID believe everything they were seing, didn't they? I also think a great compliment to her acting skills wa the fact that people thought she made up the dialogue as she went along, Lucy found that to be great vindication as an actress. When we look back on it now, you see how natural she makes everything look, and having her real life hubby on the show had to have helped. As for the previous discussion, thanks for restraining yourself Mickey, and thanks Amber, but i agree with Mkaleek or whatever way you write that, one should always look at both sides, Lucy was a comic genius but could be hard to work with, yes, that's balanced. Desi was a genius pioneer, but he later let it all evaporate, also balanced. It's funny, they DID both see shrinks to try and save their marriage, Lucy used to tell this funny story how the doctor would be wiped out at the end of it after all their yelling and screaming at each other.

Sorry about that before! I totally agree with everyone though, Desi was a real pioneer, he definitely deserves all the credit he has recieved, plus more. A lot of people didn't realize that he did all that he did, even Lucy said that. Carole Cook said in one interview that even in the middle of the divorce, when the press was saying how Lucy was the brains behind Desilu, Lucy corrected them, when she could have taken all the credit. Desi was great! It's too bad that his drinking really took over his life though. :(

Doesn't exactly count as the last episode of ILL that I watched, but I saw the Desi ep of Ironside again last night. Cracks me up every time. He's so funny, with his green bourbon and home made Scotch, and the thing with Ed and the ducks and the banana cocktails. :)

Ironside and Ed are driving somewhere, talking about their friend that they're going to visit. Cut to a house where a very familiar Cuban (here a doctor) is just about to begin his housecalls. A small boy keeps trying to get him to examine his pet duck (except it's not a duck, it's a Mergansa). Anyways, a call comes in about a plane in trouble, and off he goes (Desi, not the the duck), to find that one of his patients has died onboard a private plane. Desi suspects foul play (or possibly fowl play, if the duck's involved) and ropes in Ironside to help him investigate. Cue much joking about alcohol, which Juan (our Cuban doctor hero) thinks is the only food a man needs (Ironside is very hungry). The boy and the duck return, and Desi and Ed (who turns out to be a duck expert (and to have hithertofore untapped comic timing excellence)) diagnose pregnancy. Boy duck now clearly girl duck. Sorry. Mergansa. Anyway, the gang head off for further investigations, still wanting food, so Desi buys them severely powerful banana cocktails instead, which clearly do the trick because they solve the case (won't tell you whodunnit in case you get to see it). Then there's a nice end scene when Desi plies Ironside with his home-made bourbon.

"That's bourbon? It's green."
"Of course is green. Is bourbon. What you want? Purple bourbon? You some kind of a nut?"

:)

That "heaven" number is a beautiful song. Desi sang it perfectly in that episode. That episode is like one of my all time favorites because it showed a close up of Lucy and Desi for a long time, while he was singing the song. they were kissing and laughing, and you really got to see them, not as Lucy and Ricky, but as Lucy and Desi, I think, for that short 4 minutes of them dancing together.

"Ricky and Fred Are TV Fans."
Frankly, I agree with Ricky and Fred in this ep. Boxing was a very popular sport at that time, and television had just made it even more popular. So I don't think Lucy and Ethel should have been so upset that they want to watch the fights at the same time each week. The gals create their own complications by their actions to make R & F "understand how we feel about this," and then they say near the end it was R & F's fault for 'being so glued to that television set." And why couldn't they arrange ahead of time to go to a movie or somewhere, knowing the 'big fight' would be on?

That's where you and I differ, i never found anything he did funny, he was the straight man after all, but he did get that bugged out eye thing right after doing it on practically every show, there, nobody could touch him, and the singing too of course, to think i used to hate all those musical numbers growing up and now i love them to death. Of course, when you've been hearing the same songs for half a century, they tend to get very familiart and nice to hear.
