Although, I love both shows I picked TMTMS. I guess because I like the storylines better and the fact that Mary Richards is looking for Mr. Right, and lets not forget those parties!

Well said, Holly! Same here. Both shows are incredibly well written and deserving of the acclaim they've gotten over the years. I really think it comes down to personal preference.

Right, you are! I hate choosing though because I love both shows so much and they both have their good qualities and of course I have my favorite episodes from both.

Please don't make me choose. On any given day my answer would be different. They're my (interchangeable) #1 and #2 favorite shows of all time. I declare a "tie"! (Whew! Wormed outta that one!)

I already stated my reason on the DVD board. But, I can't choose between the two. I love them both equally. I've been a fan of both shows all my life.

These aren't my two favorite sitcoms, but they're both still great, and I can't choose, heh.

The Mary Tyler Moore Show! The Dick Van Dyke Show is great too, but I just prefer MTM, especially when you have Ted Knight and Ed Asner.

"The Dick van Dyke show". At least Rob talks to ALL the people he works with, and not just a few!

LOL Treky. I always wondered what those people who work behind Mary and Murray where doing, and why they were never in on the hilarity that ensued at WJM... ;)

I love watching both shows but I like the comedy in Dick Van Dyke just a tad
better.

MTM played two different characters on both shows. On DVDS she was more zany but still ladylike and on TMTMS she was more of the straight lady who responded to the situations around her. I liked MTM with Ann Morgan Guilbert, who played next door Millie on TDVDS, better than Valerie Harper, who played next door neighbor Rhoda on TMTMS. Don't get me wrong I am a big fan of Valerie Harper and I did enjoy watching her on TMTMS but Ann Morgan Guilbert and MTM did some great comedy together that is ranked up there with Lucille Ball and Vivian Vance. Too bad there were not episodes featured those two. On those two shows MTM played characters that were groundbreaking even though there was nothing new about being a housewife and being single. On TDVDS Mary showed that housewives don't wear pearls and dresses while doing housework and cooking. They more likely in pants and we got that through Laura Petrie. On TMTMS Mary put a different spin on the single life of being content on being single with a few dates here and there while being a career woman. Now on apartments that Mary Richards lived in I loved the high rise she moved into the last two seasons. More modern and gave Mary Richards more maturity.

Both are wonderful shows, but for consistency, I would say "The Dick Van Dyke Show." It was top notch from the start. "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" was not very funny in the beginning. There were still merits to those early shows. The scripts were well structured in terms of defining the characters and their relationships, and the acting was superb. It's just that the laughs were rare. But once it got its groove several seasons in (the third season onward), some of the comedy produced on TMTMS was brilliant and, in my opinion, unsurpassed. So comparing the later seasons of TMTMS to TDVDS, I would say TMTMS wins hands down.

MTM by default. I've never seen much of DVD to have a fair opinion. But I love MTM; Mary and Rhoda remind me of myself.

Dick Van Dyke's show had a strong physical comedy element in the performances of its leading man - it is a fun show to actually look at on the tv screen. I still can't get into Mary Tyler Moore's series. I can't relate to those characters.

I was gonna cop out and say I can't pick one because they were both so great.
But if I had to select one...hmmmnnn...I guess I'd pick The Mary Tyler Moore Show (I'd never even make the decision unless somebody told me "You can only watch one of them ever again, so pick one").
1) Huge MTM guy, so TMTMS was obviously centered around Mary. Dick was incredibly talented, too, though.
2) I'm in journalism, so I enjoyed the newsroom scenes in TMTMS more than most, in addition to the home scenes.
3) I agree with those who believe the last four years of the MTMS show were unsurpassed for consistently great comedy.

In any event, when I think 1960s, I think TDVDS, and when I think 1970s, I think of TMTMS...it doesn't get any better than either of those shows!

I love both shows, but my heart completely belongs to Mary. It really does come down to personal preference though because both shows are so good.

I voted for TMTMS mostly because I liked Mary Richards better than Laura Petrie.

I voted for DVDS. Lets face it, if it wasn't for the DVDS the MTMS would never have come into being. Mary learned her lessons well on DVDS and used what she learned there as a blueprint when putting together her own show. Also its fun watching Buddy and Sally compete for Rob's attention, or Laura and Millie cooking up a scheme.

Woah that's awful asking that!!! I'd have to say the Mary Tyler Moore Show, I think it's funnier. Don't get me wrong...I LOVE the Dick Van Dyke Show too...but I like MTM better
