View Full Version : The best Frank Stephens
Novarro 03-02-2003, 09:35 PM Which of the two actors that played the role of Frank Stephens, Darren's father does the group think was the best. Robert F. Simon or Roy Roberts? Even though Roberts was a wonderful veteran actor and was very busy on TV in the '60's I've always preferred Simon who appeared more frequently in the role and somehow looked more like he could be Dick York's father Also he flirted with Endora better as well!! .
Arfies 03-03-2003, 09:54 PM Simon for me, too. I think that it's in "Samantha Meets the Folks", where Darrin, Frank, and Phyllis Stephens are all arguing in the kitchen- and they sound like they actually could be related! "Then there's no argument!" "Then there's no argument!" "No argument!"
catlover79 10-29-2007, 09:45 PM Robert F. Simon - to me, he WAS Frank just like Dick York WAS Darrin. Darrin's pop had such a great sense of humor, was a lot of fun and adored his daughter-in-law Samantha. What's not to love?
OH Nuts! 10-29-2007, 10:07 PM Robert F. Simon - to me, he WAS Frank just like Dick York WAS Darrin. Darrin's pop had such a great sense of humor, was a lot of fun and adored his daughter-in-law Samantha. What's not to love?
Ditto!
comedyfreak 10-30-2007, 08:35 AM I was use to seeing Roy Roberts and I had to get use to Robert Simon. Anyone know why Roy replaced him?.
Darrin1Fan 10-31-2007, 05:27 AM Just had to say that I've read Dick York's autobiography and have seen a pic of his dad - Robert F. Simon does actually look quite alot like him!! So I would say Simon.:)
catlover79 11-02-2007, 08:42 PM ^ I own that book and it never occured to me that both his real dad and TV dad looked like each other, but you're right!! On the other hand, his mother looked absolutely nothing like Mabel Albertson.
Darrin1Fan 11-03-2007, 04:19 PM yeah and thank god about that catlover79 - i always think mabel albertson has a face that makes u wanna slap her!!

catlover79 01-09-2008, 03:16 PM I just hope Mabel Albertson wasn't a big nagging pain in real life like Phyllis was!!

Mabel had a long TV career (and movies too) where she played these nagging, uppity, domineering women. And the animosity you saw between Endora and and Phyllis wasn't all acting either  ;)
I would love to see an episode of Mabel's first sitcom regular role as the mom on "Those Whiting Girls", the summer replacement for "I Love Lucy" in 1953 and 1955, I think.
And yea, this makes my 1,000 post  I'm a senior at last! Where are my benefits? :D

Interesting news, where did you get the info about Endora and Phyllis?

Connections with the author of I Love the Illusion, Agnes bio.
Agnes and Mabel were both strong willed women and they had a personality clash. They respected each other, but they did not socialize.
Zoneboy 04-22-2008, 01:02 PM Robert F. Simon appeared on TZ so he wins by default. :)

No Time Like the Past (1963)
Zoneboy 04-22-2008, 01:04 PM It's hard to believe that Mabel and Jack Albertson only worked together twice in their careers. Of course this info comes from the ever-reliable IMDb.

catlover79 04-29-2008, 01:38 PM ^ Yeah, you have to take everything you read at imdb with a grain of salt.
Eric Paddon 05-27-2008, 07:17 PM The likely reason why Robert F. Simon was replaced in the part is because in 1967 he landed a regular role on the ABC series "Custer" and hence, wouldn't have been available for any "Bewitched" appearances that year, and once he was replaced a first time they likely would have felt no need to go back to him after "Custer" flopped big-time.

But for some reason, Robert F. Simon did indeed return to the part. Perhaps, Roy Roberts was the one now busy with another project--not sure, but I do know the final appearances of Frank Stephens were Simon back in the role he originated.

I think Robert F. Simon only played Frank once in the Sargent era, but I could be wrong.
comedyfreak 06-27-2008, 03:47 AM I think you're right, I remember seeing him in a color episode. I just can't remember which one.
Jude The Obscure 06-28-2008, 10:47 AM Robert F. Simon was also in the third season, so we did see him in color episodes before he came back for the 8th season. I think the explanation was that Roy Roberts had landed another series and couldn't do any more appearances--not sure. I do know Roy was pretty busy during the 1966-67 and 67-68 seasons with his semi-regular role on The Lucy Show with his role as Mr. Cheever, the bank president, but still manage to squeeze in Frank Stephens (since this was only a 2-3 guest shot per season anyway).
catlover79 07-07-2008, 09:12 PM Didn't Roy Roberts also have a recurring role on Beverly Hillbillies around that time, or am I thinking of someone else??

catlover79 07-07-2008, 09:38 PM Gee, did anyone on Bewitched NOT guest-star on TZ?? Was Dick York the only Bewitched star to appear on TZ twice? I'm pretty sure he was.

Sandra Gould appeared twice. She was in the 3rd season episode "Cavender is Coming" and the 5th season episode "What's in the Box"
David White also appeared twice, He was in the 1st season episode "A World of Difference" and the 3rd season episode "I Sing the Body Electric"
