View Full Version : Hummer Commercials
Can you believe those Hummer commercials? At this time in history they have the audacity to advertise a vehicle that gets, oh, I don't know, 8 miles to the gallon. In one commercial a 'cute' (blahwwa!) couple is driving on the beach. In another one a woman, all by her lonesome, is driving in the gigantic, canary-yellow vehicle through town and country. It's obsene. I'll bet that the Hummer people will be hearing about their extremely poor judgement.

Janice 02-26-2003, 05:15 PM I haven't seen the ad yet, but I'll be on the lookout for it. I tape most of my shows and buzz by the commercials which could explain why I missed it.
Do you think the ad is in poor taste because, in this economy, who can afford that sort of luxury...or for environmental reasons or both? Just curious.
I never even heard of the Hummer...who makes it? Man, am I out of touch or what.
It's gotta be new. Please at least tell me it's new, lol.

It's gotta be new. Please at least tell me it's new, lol. It's not new, lol. It's been around for a long time. But it used to be considered as a military vehicle or for fire fighting and like that. Now it is being advertised as the ultimate SUV for those who are competing for top-notch-statis-yuppiness with the Jones's next door. The reason I say that their timing could not be worse is because of the 'terror' situation and the understandable disgust the world has about America's consupmtion of oil. If you haven't seen the vehicle I'm sure that you'll be shocked when you do. It is one big, really big, puppy.

It sounds like it's in poor taste. I don't like those extra huge SUVs on the road anyway. Dateline did a show where it profiled those types of vehicles, and they've actually sheared the roofs off smaller vehicles. I hate to say this, but people have been decapitated by them. They're too high off the ground. It's like people driving tanks around.
Lots of people who drive these things get a feeling of superiority on the road that is frightening.
I agree about the oil thing too...for reasons you stated and for the environment.
It sounds like Madison Avenue botched this commercial. What's next? O.J. Simpson selling knives.

I don't care for them. I prefer limos, like my '76 (see pic below).
If the Hummer you saw gets only 8 mpg. (that's about what I've heard, too), then my limo is more economical (it gets 10-13 mpg). I can afford to drive this car because it's less than 4 miles to work, so it's not driven far. One tank of fuel easily lasts one week, sometimes more.
bandito 03-02-2003, 11:36 AM whats the big deal? imo if you like and can afford a hummer go for it! im not going to stop living because of a terror situation.

My point is that foriegn oil is a big part of this situation no matter how you look at it. Much has been made of that. So for a company to go on an advertising blitz about a vehicle that's as uneconomical and pretencious as the Hummer, might not be such a good idea on the part of the manufacturer or the add industry. It's maybe a bit fatheaded.
Besides the timing of the ads, look at them from the practical or not practical sense at any time under any circumstance. I’m not an advertising person but there is such a thing as targeted ads. TV advertising is very expensive and for the most part not targeted, except the client might have a say about what programs their ads will be aired with. The Hummer ranges in price from 58 thousand to 110 thousand dollars. We see ads for BMW’s, which are near that price range, but BMW’s are cars not military transport vehicles. It might make more sense if the makers of Hummers would target their ads in places where they are most likely to reach the more specific likely consumers of their vehicles, maybe in certain magazines for example. That would not only be a lot less expensive, but it’d be more incognito, out of the line of fire of the general public critique. Practically speaking, for multiple reasons, I think it was a poor business decision on the part of Hummer. I have a personal opinion about Hummers. They’re ecologically damaging. They’re unnecessary as a tool around town vehicle for the family or Jane and Johnny Doe-Yuppie, but that’s another matter.

An abundance of money wouldn't change my attitude about the Hummer's ugliness and pretenciousness or its drawbacks in an ecological sense.
fr00ti 03-02-2003, 07:14 PM Ya'll made want a hummer even more than I did before. :p
