View Full Version : I'm pulling the plug off...
Pitooey 02-20-2003, 09:51 PM I'm pulling the plug off this show! This evening I was eating dinner with my children and Friends was on. All that came out of their mouths were the word A$$... Now...... It's not like I've never heard the word before. But, I'll be darn if I have to sit and watch one of my favorite shows saying the word over and over. There are alot of shows that I refused to watch because of the content. I just got sick & tired of hearing A$$, A$$,, A$$ over and over........ Can't anyone speak normal anymore? It's time this show stopped running............. :thumbsdow
AnaheimPMWitch 02-20-2003, 11:11 PM I agree thats why I got sick of it to
My Niece use to LOVE IT when she was like 8 I thought it was highly innapprotiate that my sister let her watch it but Eh to each thier own
Samsgirl xo 03-13-2003, 12:41 PM yea they have to understand that they have a younger demographic audience as well
Sitcomwriter 03-13-2003, 11:41 PM That's not what bothers me about this show. The writing just isn't there anymore. The 1st 4 seasons were classic but after that it just got worse and worse. It's a shame.
JenniferAnistongurl5 05-03-2003, 02:58 PM You know I understand what you mean, when you are watching tv during dinner and they only other word that comes out of their mouth is A$$ that's not the greatest. But for them to take it off because of that is crazy! You'd have to take every single show off if that was the case! Maybe the people who don't like it just shouldn't watch or not watch it with a younger audience!
90210 Dude 05-03-2003, 04:59 PM I agree with JenniferA,
Friends isn't intended for kids anyways, so basically turn the channel if you don't like it. What do you expect them to say?, thats what real people in real life talk about. Perhaps that show with Bob Saget and the Olsen twins is more suited for some. :talk: No need to knock like the best show EVER! ;) :happyface
JenniferAnistongurl5 05-03-2003, 05:03 PM Thank you 90210 Dude!:)
Pitooey 05-03-2003, 09:42 PM Well dude I have lived in the times when you could put the TV on at 8:00 and not hear so much cussing. If you like friends more power to you........
90210 Dude 05-03-2003, 10:56 PM Hello Pitooey, well, in all do respects of coarse! :) ,
You mentioned a time when you could watch tv and not hear 'cussing'. Well, was it the same time when tv implied all women were no more than house wives?, or cross ethnic relationships were no more than just being neighbours? , or being gay was an impossible myth?. Put it this way, Wil & Grace is a tame show but there is no way that it gets aired in the days you refer to. All in the Family would be considered very tame by todays standards and Archie Bunker rambled off many ethnic slurs.
I guess it all depends in perspectives, culture and generations but nowadays the word "ass" isn't considered a cuss despite the context it is used in. It is in the dictionary, you can say it in public and use in scrabble. Though the meaning is differen't , my POINT is that there are far more negative potrayals in the " good ol days" than there are today. That it doesn't have to take a "cuss word" to have a negative meaning.
People do use alot of inappropriate slang in everyday conversation, thats just the way it is .The show Friends ,whether its right or wrong, do potray their generation very well otherwise it wouldn't be so popular to that age group. Its been this way for awhile so I don't understand how it took you so long to realize that Friends had a mature content to it! :)
I'm not here trying to insult anyone ,disrespect anyone , or lookin for a fight on a sitcom forum:) just wanted to further a discussion that interested me a bit! ;) :happyface have a good one. ;)
Pitooey 05-04-2003, 01:00 PM Hello dude
I know times have changed. I've had friends on since the beginning of time and I've understood the content of the material.
The reason I don't see certain movies or shows is because of the language. I choose not to turn it on. There was a time when I would put on the show Friends and not hear the word ASS........... Why does this word have to be said over and over?
All of a sudden I noticed that the friends are speaking more and more into ADULT like banter. I can understand if the rest of the people here want to continue to see the show. They probably don't have small children. I just don't agree with ASS being said over a dozen times in a 3 minute segment that's all.
I use to put on this show it was one of my favorites. I just have to shield my kids from it. My kids will know soon enough the bad language but, they won't hear it in my house if I could help it! :)
Pitooey 05-04-2003, 11:51 PM I forgot to mention that if they were referring to ASS ( as in behind) they should've used the word Behind. Maybe I would still be watching the show.
Now I know that 8:00 PM is not an appropriate time for the children to watch channel 4 here in NYC. (It use to be only cable TV that I had to shield them). Now it's regular channels too.

Hearing Monica say "Kiss my BEHIND!" just doesn't have the same effect as hearing her say Kiss my ass!
My daughter watches Friends with me. I dont' even flinch. She knows she's not allowed to say it.
I was raised in a very good family, very loving, and I knew every cuss under the sun by age 10; children will learn them, one way or another.
Pitooey 05-09-2003, 04:47 PM My problem is I always "flinch" whenever I hear them.
To me theres no need for it.....
trekkie 05-09-2003, 06:24 PM The writing just isn't very good anymore. The majority of jokes aren't funny & the stories just aren't there (Well, they are, but they're not very good).
Plus, Chandler, Monica & Rachel are all looking really old; while Ross, Joey & Rachel all look the same.
As much as I hate to say it, I wish everyone hadn't agreed to another season. I mean, it's like, the comedic acting of David Shwimmer & Matt LeBlanc are the only things keepings the show afloat now.
Artfiore1 02-06-2004, 12:43 PM Pitooey,
You claim that in the show you saw with your children "all that came out of their mouths were the word 'A$$.'" Could that be a bit of an exagerration?
Was it like this: Phoebe walks into the coffee shop, sees Joey sitting there and says, "A$$."
He replies, "A$$."
Later that day, Ross and Chandler enter Chandler & Monica's apartment. She looks at them and says, "A$$."
Chandler asks her, "A$$?"
She replies, "A$$."
Ross remarks, "A$$, a$$, a$$, a$$, a$$, a$$!"
We cut to the apartment across the hall, where Joey and Rachel are having the following conversation:
Joey: "A$$?"
Rachel: "A$$."
Joey: "A$$!"
Rachel: "A$$."
Joey: "A$$?"
Rachel: "A$$."
Joey: "A$$!"
Rachel: "A$$."
The telephone rings. Rachel picks up the receiver and says, "A$$?"
Now, I'm not sure what episode you're referring to, and the writing may not be what it once was. But somehow, I suspect that there had to have been more to it than that.

ROFL, sounds like a nice parody of the South Park episode where the sh-word was used 162 times, LOL
Heather987 02-12-2004, 12:11 AM Ass is very tame compared to things that are seen and heard on TV these days. The content of Friends is not violent, racy, or overly sexual. The women are not prancing around half naked, the men are not shown in bars getting drunk and fighting. The show is campy with a few slang words thrown in. As far as the characters talking more to the adults more then the children, at least there not saying GODD!*&$M, like I have heard on other shows, or A**Hole. The characters are still shown as working class people with everyday problems that stick together as "Friends". It doesnt show graphic violence, like Springer who is shown during day time hours in my city. I would rather my children hear Ass then watch graphic violence, sex, and backstabbing.
Was Friends ever intended for children? They talked about Sex, Divorce, Lesbians, Porno, Ugly Naked Guy, etc... is that really children geared?
Alyssa08 02-26-2004, 06:45 PM you just said chandler, monica, and rachel and poss, joey, and rachel.. which one is it?
Artfiore1 02-26-2004, 08:46 PM Pitooey,
It seems to me that the word "a$$", as refers to a part of the body, has become so commonplace on television these days that it's on course to, in the not-so-distant future, lose its "bad word" status altogether. Who knows? If we were living 50 or 75 years from now, it's entirely possible that this might not even be an issue, and the thought of us even having a discussion like this might simply be laughable. Chances are, your kids will be around then and laughing at that everyday word, which, for some inexplicable reason, was considered naughty back in your time. (Remember -- as ridiculous as it seems now, there was a time when the people on "I Love Lucy" were not allowed to say the word "pregnant" on the show.)
Meanwhile, I'll continue to sit here and wonder who it was, somewhere in our history, who decided that it was okay to say the word "butt" on TV, but not "a$$"; that it was okay to say the word "crap" on TV, but not "sh*t": that it was okay to say the word "breast" on TV, but not "t*t", etc., etc. . . . . . . and why he, she or they did so.

KristinDaBomb 03-06-2004, 01:00 AM Well, if you think this show is bad, you must think Sex and the City, is He**! They say the F word millions of times, and have very graphic scenes.
