Other night reading some of the postings here, went under the "Alice" section, someone said something about Alice coming to WGN. Another person replied about posting false info and how that can get you banned from sitcomsonline.com . I read that has already happened to a few others, banned from posting false information.

My husband read this and considers the act of banning someone just be posting false information, may be a violation of free speech. Other woods, may be going too far. What exactly was said by these folks that got them "banned"? I assume these two didnt post their source. But then again how does one check it out? Meaning of course chcking out the "source" to see why what was being said, well ...being said.

I understand that , like other forums sitcomsonline needs rules.
I can see banning people who post things that would be considered slander, threating, or even dirty ( then again what really is the def. of dirty- my brother for example considers HBO's OZ and Six Feet Under "prono" though both shows are disscussed from time to time here ).

But to ban someone for false information, makes me wonder if the people in charge ever reads the many of TV trivia books out there? A LOT of them have information that often is wrong. Look at many of the Lucy books that came out over the years? I myself have three books in my collection that gave three different stories on Connie Hines ( Carol Post on Mr. ED ) and her opinions on MR. ED. Everything from "its a classic I am proud of " to " ...it was only a paycheck".

Though I dont own a copy, I have been told that both Barry Williams bio on the Brady Bunch and the book "Written out of Television" have so many errors that buying them would be a waste on money.

Sometimes the stars themselves give out the wrong info. Look at Tina Lousie and Jay North? Both stars over the years have fliped flopped their opinions of the shows that made them famous. Patty Duke is another one. I myself heard North years ago say how he was abused on the set while Joe kearnes ( the first Mr. Wilson ) actually hit him a few times, while on other shows he had nothing but praise and respect for the man. Makes me wonder what kind of mood medication North takes since he has said over the years he has an anger problem.

Then you have the radio. heard djs over the years say which shows is coming to TV Land, Hallmark, Nick@Nite, ect...and often they are wrong. Yesterday I myself heard on the radio last weeka story about the late Nell Carter and how "Gimmie A Break" may be coming to Nick@Nite sometime later this year. I believe it was on Washington's MIX 107.3 . Of course reading some of the posts here says otherwise.

Now if someone posted this under "Gimmie A Break" and if the info turns out to be false would he/she find themselves banned from sitcomsonline.com ? Shouldnt be punished by wrong information. Since almost 60% of things said on the radio are false ( and the fact that djs live/die by ratings many have been known to stretch the truth and be outrageous just so they can get the numbers ), makes me wonder if TV Land, and the other networks monitor what is said about them on radio. Then again since so little radio is taped ( when was the last time you taped a dj on the radio ) I guess even if you say something like "the man who played George Jefferson is gay" and even if Sherman Hemsley hears the broadcast chances are he wont be able to sue
unless of course he can get a tape of it , it would be his word vs. the dj's word.

Sorry if I went long on this but to ban someone only for posting wrong info ( unless of course its intended to hurt someone ), my husband and I feel , its a little much.

If you're knowingly posting wrong information just because you wish the show was on or just to get on other people's nerves, then you should be banned if you do it often enough. But if you honestly believe false information and didn't have any reason to doubt it, you shouldn't be banned. You can usually tell the difference between those people.

This site's privately run so moderators can ban whoever they please. ..Not that I agree with banning anyone for no apparent reason.

Free speach has nothing to do with it. If someone came into your livingroom and bothered you by talking too much or just being plum ugly, you can make them leave. That's life. The administrator of this board can ban anyone anytime that he wants. In the case of purposely posting false imformation, I would safely assume that he has asked the person not to do that after a prior false post. Then, when the person ignores the warning, he/she gets banned. That's fine by me. I prefer that the administrator of this site be attentive to false rumors rather than ignore them. I also don't like to see people take advantage of a good thing like this site to amuse themselves or further some agenda by speading lies. I appreciate the administator keeping an eye on that sort of 'National Enquier' type posting.

Yes, you'd have to do something really bad for someone to ban you here. I think that the moderators here are actually pretty lenient.

We're talking about lying and sometimes slandering someone. Banning someone is not like trying to kill someone either. It's just a way to keep civility on the boards. I don't think you can blame the administrator for not wanting people to purposely spread false rumors. Especially if he has warned them not to do that after a first or second offense.

I think it's deserving punishment to get banned for posting bad info. Now if it's one bad piece of information, it could be a mistake. However, if you are constantly spreading false information, you deserve to get banned.

If you have info that you want to post on the boards that comes from a tv news website, make sure you post a link to the article. That's the difference. The link does make a difference. What if I went over to the Facts of Life board and the Diff'rent Strokes board and posted 'FOL and DS are coming out on DVD- March 9th.' What if that info turns out to be false and a ton of people replied to the thread? I've just pissed off quite a few people by spreading stuff without posting a link. It's a totally different case if I post 'FOL and DS are coming out on DVD- March 9th' and then post the news article and the link. The link shows that I didn't make it up.

Edit: Now if I heard something and didn't have a link to post, I could simply say in my post that it could be a rumor, but thought I would post it anyway.

Here is what happened. There was this user named CLASSICTVLOVER. A couple years ago, he posted this information about Nick at Nite that seemed too good to be true. It said that N@N was bought out, they were going to air FOL again, etc.) A lot of people thought this was true and they were excited about this and couldn't wait. TJ learned that everything he posted was false. Upon hearing this, everybody was disappointed. That was December, 2001. Last November, he came back and posted several items of false information on the Laverne and Shirley, Bewitched, and the FOL boards. Since he now had a history of making false posts, he was banned.

Another member named Jon Wiley was continually posting false information and confusing members. He wasn't really banned, but he was put on "Read Only", which allows a member to view posts but makes the user unable to post under his name.

As for freedom of speech, you can't say whatever you feel like on these boards. You are a guest in Todd's house and if you don't wish to follow his rules, you will be booted out. And to clarify something posted earlier in this thread, only TJ can ban members, since he is the administrator of this site. I'm just a moderator and that's it.

You are right about freedom of speech.

Freedoom of speech I believe only means the government will not
stop you from expressing your thoughts and opinions. In other words if I said "George W. Bush SUCKS !!! " I will not go to jail for it. Try doing that in Iran or the Middle East !!! Nor does the government censors mail/ email ( China does that ).

Freedom of Speech does not mean I have the right to go into the local theatre and yell fire or spread slander.

I can see "Joan Davis Fan" concern though about posting wrong info. Say I am driving down I-25 and I am listening to "Mudflap" ( A popular Denver radio dj) and he says that Bea Arthur has died.
Thinking this would be a good topic to discuss here, I posted in the Maude forums about her passing. Of course I get replies from others who heard nothing about it.

Then it comes out that not only Bea Arthur has not died but "Mudflap" was joking about her death ( hey I have heard stranger things on the radio ). Since I am sure this upset many Bea Arthur fans , does this mean that by posting the worng info I could be banned from here?

You bring up the "National Enquier", sadly a lot of society has gone to that level. I actually met people who care more about who is gay in Hollywood than their own children. really sad !!!

Radio has gotten to the point ( at least what I have came across ). I dont know if Mr. pravenpal ( I know I misspelled that ) or sitcomsonline knows but I too have came across djs who announced so-called future happenings at TV Land, Nick@Nite, ect.. Often wrong and with so many mis-information out there ( at the Lucy-Desi days a few years back in Jamestown, NY one of the authors warned about how much wrong stuff is said about Lucille Ball on the web alone,, he says about 70% ) so its quite easy to post wrong info here without knowing its wrong. Always good to state your source though it may be tough to contact them to see if its true or not.

I believe it was a radio station down south someplace that started the rumor about PBS showing a new "gay" Sesame Street, with a "gay" Bert and Ernie and an HIV muppet ( the HIV muppet did show up though but only South Africa's Sesame Street ). The rumor spread like wildfire ( church boycotts, getting people daner up ) and I believe PBS sued the dj who started it. Freedom of speech didnt protect him.

I agree with you, Sally Mander. That's how I've always interpreted freedom of speech. I think people who delibrately spread false information ought to be banned. Also, I think people who attack other posters who don't like their favorite TV shows or whatever ought to be banned too.

I agree, no body, no one should be banned for posting false information. Someone, in fact a few people- posted about The Dick Van Dyke show returning, with Rob and Laura as old people now. It even got into the news section, and a few poeple posted the same article, and even a website. Obviously this information was false, but this was because the person that made this rumour, not the person posting it. It's never been heard of aghain, no one should be banned for the incidents

If you make a mistake and post the wrong information, that's fine. You can always admit the mistake and then do better in finding better resources. But it is so obvious that people has abused the freedom of speech thing on this board to the point that it is grossly irritating and aggravating to others and that is not fair to the majority of others that do post. If you know that you are posting something that is false and can play with the emotions of others, then it is definitely a no. I can understand why TJ has these rules on the board. Not everyone can be mature about their post and I am sure that you guys know a few people that fall or have fallen under that category in the past.

You want a clear example of somebody posting false information? I can show you what is going on RIGHT NOW.

http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showthread.php?s=&threadid=51572

A poster Ericguy insists that WKRP in Cincinnati is being aired on station WXIX (a FOX station in Cincinnati). This is not true.

1. I have checked the website- it is not in their programming grid.

2. I emailed the station and got a response from their operations manager (which I will gladly foward the actual email to anyone) and he said NO.

3. I called the station and talked to this manager - Rick Oliver - and he insisted it is not on and that HE makes the schedule.

4. Pavanbadal - you guys know him, trust him, and have gone to him for info all the time - says that WKRP is not on anywhere in the US and that Fox does not have the rights to air it.
And he has told Ericguy that his information is false and to stop the lying.

5. This Ericguy creates an alias to back himself up and uses his same computer to do so - Pavanbadal catches him and calls him on it and he denies it.

This guy still goes on and on saying, you can't prove me wrong, you don't get the station and so on.

The facts speak for themselves, I proved he is lying and yet he continues to go on.

Now, what do you think of this?

I think this guy is a total nutjob and a first-class ballbuster. He needs to be relocated to Bansville.
He's so adament and writes well, and convincingly, that at first I believed him until I read further...where you demolished him with facts...then the alias...and Pavanbadal stepped in...
I noticed he has a few posts under his belt. I might read them later to see if this is a pattern for him.

for those who enjoy posting false info on purpose and doing so on a "regular" basis, talking to my cousin abut this subject ( she comes to sitcomsonline.com quite often but hasnt posted anything yet ) she tells me that in her state ( Virginia ) it actually is illegal
to use the internet to post information for the use of slander/libel/
and other "false" infomation.

Again even there its one thing to post wrong information by mistake but doing it "on purpose" , can get one-self into some trouble. In her hometown a woman kept posting on the local forums there that while eating at a Hardees she kept seeing employees spitting ( and doing other nasty stuff ) on her hamburger. In the forums she claimed that the employees at Hardees were "out to kill her". Yes, this woman had a history of mental problems. Heck she posted some of this while STILL IN THE HOSPITAL !!! Didnt know hospitals allowed patients with mental problems access to the web.

The first post Hardees let it slipped but she did it again and again
and again. Hardees had enough!! They investigated this and later on with the moderators/ webmaster help tracked her down using her IP address and Hardess pressed charges.

Dont know if this woman got any jailtime but according to my cousin she did ended up in court over this and had to pay quite a large fine. And oh yeah...she is not allowed to have access to the internet. Think she said her "ban" is to last for at least 10 years.

Had those who have been banned, lived in Virginia, they could've faced more problems due to their actions other than just being "banned" from sitcomsonline.com .
