View Full Version : Anyone else disabled?
Chocoholic 02-11-2003, 07:43 PM Is anyone else here disabled or know someone with a disability?
I have coloboma. It's a rare eye condition that caused my eyes to not form right. One of my eyes had to be removed because it was so deformed and the pupil of my other eye is shaped funny. I can only see a small amount out of my left eye and I'm over-sensitive to light, especially outdoors. There are also secondary characteristics, like impairments in hearing, speech, development, and some motor skils. (All of which I have.)
I used to get picked on a lot in school. I hated myself for being disabled. Now, I accept my disabilities and limitations. If people won't accept me for who I am, then that's their problem, not mine.

That's great that you can accept your disabilities.I have what I guess you might consider a disability, because it keeps me from living the kind of life I want.I have some type of "mystery illness",that the Drs. have never found out the cause of.I feel terribly a lot of times and I have various symptoms - too many to go into.It may be something like Fibromyalgia and it sure sucks:(
Sara Micelli 02-11-2003, 08:44 PM I have mild Cerebral Palsy.

I don't know if it is coloboma, but my neice has a deformity of one her pupils...but none of the other sx's you talked about...
I have several friends who are deaf...
I have a friend who has cerebral palsy, it affects his left side and they told him he couldn't drive a stick shift because of it, but they forgot to put that on his license, and he does great driving a stick...haha
I have heart problems, I have actually have surgery already, but I don't let it get me down either... I do what I want when I want...I know my limitations,
My advice to anyone is just be educated... ask questions... and be an active participant in your healthcare...
XoVanillaRain90oX 02-11-2003, 08:59 PM I don't think I have anything wrong with me.

My mom has that. She's been going to the chiropractor alot lately and feels 100% better.
*PinkLady* 02-11-2003, 09:46 PM I'm not, but I know people who are. A friend of mine has cerebral palsy, and so does my other friend's sister. And before she died, my aunt was in a wheelchair b/c her leg was amputated.

Its very nice that you feel that way about yourself. Honestly noone else's opinion about you shall matter. Unless its a nice one. People in this world today can be terrible. But one day and I mean it will happen.... they will get what they deserve, and I have lived by that my whole life.
And everyone has a disablity wether they can see it or not..... nobody is perfect. So stick with that attitude... its people like you that make this world a better place. :) Stay strong.
Rockapella722 02-11-2003, 10:31 PM I have what's called "amblyopia" - (sp?) - which is a fancy word for 'lazy eye.'
Nothing huge, except that my brain ignores about 80% of the images taken in by my left eye. I have very little depth perception, also, because of it.
Not too huge, but it does get me down when people tease.
Brian 02-11-2003, 10:34 PM While I wouldn't call it a disability, I am autistic but very high functioning. I remember when I was little, I wouldn't talk very much and when I did, it was either nonsense or it was lines from movies. I had trouble in elementary school but mostly during the early years (K-2). I had very few friends and usually those were people who wanted to be my friend. I wasn't very good on making friends. After years of therapy, I am now more outgoing, I have a lot of friends (most of them being on these boards), and I am getting very high grades in school. Yesterday I found out that I was one of two valedictorians at my school for the whole first semester.

(so my eye kinda rolls up like a lazy eye) Like Kristen I can see very little out of that eye. I need glasses for my eye with glocoma. I'll always ahve to wear em for protection. sigh. I feel for u guyz with eye probelms.
laceyinthesky 02-11-2003, 11:06 PM Well it's not exactly a disability but I used to have trichotillomania.. which was very annoying. I still have urges but I keep them under control. I had it for years but I can credit my sweetie for getting me to stop. :loveya:
AnaheimPMWitch 02-12-2003, 01:29 AM I'm told I"m Learning disabled that eventhough I"m 30 I have the mind set of a 18 year old like i'm slower then my age in mind and in education (what takes a normal person two seconds to figure out would take me wayy longer) personally though I think thats a bag of well you know .... I think it was a way of our old school system to get money out of my parents
1strunfan 02-12-2003, 10:29 AM I just wanted to say, I'm so proud of all of you with disabilities that don't let it get you down. There are alot of people in this world who don't view life with as much clarity as you. Bravo!

Also, whoever said that we all have a disability of some kind, whether we see it or not. I totally agree. I was in a way disabled for most of my life because I'm painfully shy. Or at least I was. Now that I'm older I'm better. Not that I'm saying that is anything even in the same league as some of you because it's not. I'm just saying, we all have our limitations whether they are physical or not.

We should start a club. I actually used to have it in both eyes, but they corrected it in my left eye through surgery when I was four (this was in the days before laser surgery, so it was pretty painful). I had two more surgeries - both on my right eye - when I was six and eight, but alas, my right eye couldn't be fixed. It's nothing too major, but as you said, it's pretty bad to have an all-but-useless right eye. I also got this all through school: "dude, are you stoned?"
Pitooey 02-12-2003, 05:33 PM I am also proud of Kristen and the others for coming forth and telling us this. Keep your head up high!!!
I have a son who is learning disabled. At first I use to cry & cry for him.......... Now I hold my head up high and try to help him in everything I can. He's a good boy and when he grows
up he's going to be a fine young man.
:)

Ditto!
Yes! Yes! I agree! Can't agree more!

I was told I had a learning disability when I was in grade one. I'm also kind of slow in my mind and I don't get things as fast as alot of other people do. Sometimes I feel like my mind is a year behind.
The funny thing is, the doctors didn't know what my disability was called. Now that I'm 17, I still don't know what it is called, although my memory is much better than it used to be, but I still have to study extra hard just to pass tests. It bothers me more not knowing what my disability is called more so than knowing that I have some kind of disability.

compulsive hair pulling As a kid I did that. I would pull my hair so hard I would have chunks of hair in my hand. It seemed to relax me. Now I'm older and don't do it anymore. :)
Barnabas1 02-13-2003, 12:11 PM No, I don't think, but I have a friend with Cerebal Palsy.

I can look at it for hours, and try and draw it.. but it comes out really strangely. i hate it because i am in a perspective drawing class... everyone is a whiz, but me? No way I am the slowest one in the class. Oh well, i am getting better!! I think its awesome that people are proud of themselves for who they are. You go guys :)

Dude111 12-16-2025, 02:27 AM I knew some guy who had MS in a wheelchair and they gave him 6mo and he ended up living 20+ years in that state.. I felt aweful for him..
He passed away in January last year :(
MrCleveland 12-16-2025, 01:29 PM I have autism.
That's probably one of the reasons why I get offended easily when someone calls me "stupid" or any of its synonyms.
Dude111 12-16-2025, 11:17 PM In my opinion nothing wrong with Autism!!
Its good to be able to recognise how beautiful stuff is YOU HAVE and ya dont wanna get rid of it for crap!!

Mr. Cleveland. I don't know you in person, but from the threads here on Sitcoms online , I feel I know you pretty well. I do not think you are stupid at all. I find your posts to be intelligent and engaging . :)

I second that!
Bonniegirl 12-17-2025, 12:15 AM My Son has ADHD and he got it from me I'm sure. I was never diagnosed, but I'm sure I have at least slight ADHD. Back in the 60's and early 70's as a child this was not known. We were just considered silly, disruptive, underachievers at school. Not that I was really disruptive , but silly yes and I really didn't care about achieving ! Lol , My motto has always been " Girls just want to have fun" . It wasn't till my Son was diagnosed that I said " Holy cr*p that is me too" !!
Dude111 12-17-2025, 12:33 AM I do not think MrCleveland is stupid either....... He is one of the better members ashore!
