Yup. Danville is a pretty small town. It used to be called (couple 100 years ago) Hawke. Then they switched it to Danville. While back when I was like, 12, they had a Danville tour. Went to the red school houses, the old town hall, cemeteries, some bee cave thing. It was pretty cool.

I think its interesting to see the history of how your twon grew from when it started till now. They have awesome pictures inthese papers of what are town was like in 1884, I found out I live on one of the oldest streets in town. Here are some artlicles about the headlines above:

Insanity strikes Arlington guest-Another Arlington Hotel guest had more serious problems. He spent a night in a hotel room in September, 1889, but during the night he became insane.
His lamenations and prayers disturbed other guests, so the proprieter called the law enforcement officers.
The poor man firmley believed that he was appointed to the vacant seat in Congress occasioned by the death of Hon James Laird the paper reported.
The man was quieted, but instead of treatment, was put on the first train to Minden at Minden he got off again, and there he was pronounced insane and sent to the asylum.

Sometimes I think our town was more interesting then than it is now. lol

It has to do with siamese twins. Here is the article:

Twins can't get married in Holdrege- A pair of siamese twins found in October of 1934 that Holdrege officials were like other officials around the country.
They wouldn't perform a marriage ceromony for one of the sisters.
The Hilton sisters, Daisey and Violet, were in town to entertain at a dance sponsored by sod busters. They were born joined together at the base of the spines.
Daisey had fallen in love with a man, they had been searching all over the country for someone who would marry them, but no official wanted to preform the ceremony.
Appearently an unidentified official had expressed a willingness to perform the ceremony, but backed out at the last minute.
The girls preformed the dance anyway.
According to the paper, the girls wore beautiful frocks made alike and have the same taste and depositions, are also graceful dancers, sing harmoniously an play the saxaphone.
The twins left Holdrege early in the morning still single.

So thats the story of the twins.

Well, I think I've got the record on the oldest town:

Freiburg, in Baden-Wurttemburg, (south-east Germany) was founded in the year 1120 ad. It was ruled by Duke Bertold III, until it came under the rule of the Urach counts in 1218. The university that I attend was founded in the early 1400s. Freiburg is fortunate in that it received very little damage during World War II, and many of the original buildings are still there. It's a beautiful town!

I live in Richwood, West Virginia & have lived here forever. I don't know much about the history..I know that this town used to boom & we had lots of stores, & coal mines, & lumber mills (hence the name Richwood) We had the world's largest clothespin factory (wooooooo). It used to set where my old grade school is. The land below my house was covered in water & now houses set there. Before I was born, we were supposed to get a Coors beer factory b/c we have really good water, but some churchpeople around here got together & wouldn't let it come in & the rest of the town's people weren't even asked & didn't even know! It would have given jobs to the whole county!! we were also supposed to get US route 19 through our town instead of Summersville, but they wouldn't let it come in either! That's why this town, imo, is dead now. People in my town are different then anywhere else... and everyone knows everybody & eerybody else's bussiness. We are known as "The ramp capital of the world" Whoopie. Ramps are stinky plant things that people around here eat. If you want to know more, well find out more anyway! Go to our website http://www.richwoodwv.com and sign the guestbook that people put crazy entries in

Our town was called Pomona in the late 1800's before they decided to rename it Montrose. *shrugs* That's all I really know. Also, it's famous for being the crossroads for the Denver - Santa Fe railroad.

Also, before my parents moved to the US, they lived in a little town on the northern slope of the Carpathians in Southern Poland. Our town was originally made famous because of the ski resorts so now almost every house in town has at least 10 guest rooms because during the winter we get so many tourists. Sadly it's slowly turning from a quiet little tourist town to a commercialized tourist trap. It's still a great place. I spent 5 summers there during the 90's.

Bakersfield was settled in 1858 by a handful of families who had trekked northward through the El Tejon Pass seeking home sites rather than gold. The town was named by an early settler, Colonel Thomas Baker, who invited the weary travelers through the valley to rest overnight. These travelers would plan in advance to meet and rest in "Colonel Baker's field." Baker formally laid out the town in 1869, and within two years the city had a telegraph office, two stores, a newspaper, two boarding houses, one doctor, a wagon shop, a harness shop, one attorney, a saloon, and fifty school pupils. The Bakersfield Centennial Garden and Convention Center rests on part of the original Colonel Baker's field as well as the Centennial Plaza community park.

The City of Bakersfield was first incorporated in 1873, and in the same year, the County seat was moved from the booming little town of Havilah to Bakersfield. Three years later, the town decided to disincorporate. It was not until 1898 that the community incorporated again. The 1910, the City of Kern, formerly the Town of Sumner (East Bakersfield), annexed to the City of Bakersfield.

In 1915, the citizens of the City of Bakersfield adopted a charter calling for the city to operate under the council-manager form of government. This charter provides that the governing body of the city shall be the city council composed of seven members, one to be elected from each of the seven wards of the city for four years, overlapping terms, with a mayor elected from the council. In 1957, the charter was amended to elect a mayor at large.

Bakersfield was one of the first cities in the United States to adopt the council-manager form of government. This type of government provides that the city council adopts ordinances; appoints members of various committees, boards, and commissions; and establishes general policies for the city. Final determination of all city policies rests with the seven members of the city council. The council also appoints a city manager to implement council policies.

The changes have been many since Colonel Baker's time, but Bakersfield still retains the hospitality originally extended by the Colonel. The City of Bakersfield now boasts a population of over 221,000 people (the 13th largest city in California) and covers more than 110 square miles.

With its big city conveniences and advantages, Bakersfield still manages to maintain an atmosphere of small town hospitality, friendship, cooperation, compassion, and optimism. In 1990, the citizens of Bakersfield received the National Civic League's stamp of approval through the designation of an "All-America City" for proactively dealing with the needs of its citizens. Hallmarks of the Bakersfield community continue to be a high quality of life, a strong family orientation, and the fact that people care.
